Even when dealt with a massive county wide emergency such as this weekend, you are always calm cool and collected on the radio. I personally would like to say thank you for making this storm run as smoothly as possible, even with the upwards of 120 backlogged calls you received on Saturday and the numerous working fires you were handling at any given time.
So, thanks guys... Be on the look out for a gift basket this winter

For those who have never seen it before (either in class, or out on the streets....)

edit: this is just for arrival on the initial alarm... not for a full operation

While the county did a major overhaul of there radio designators in 2001 (or there about), Westchester County did have a "mini-attack" designator before then. The Somers twin IH brush trucks, as mentioned, had official Westchester County plates as stated in 1978 when their "engine" designators were removed. This was due to the 1979 Orens were purchased which were given the engine 185 and 186 numbers. It was the same period Croton Falls had its M/A 16 and 17, Yorktown had its M/A 8, etc.
When Westchester County overhauled their designators in 2001, the intended purpose was to stream line the designators to NFPA terminology. Prior to this time the county would give you virtually any designator that was requested ie Somers QA-1 in 1989.
One of the major changes was the inclusion of the current ambulance numbering system. Prior, Somers ambulances were "Rescue" 6, 7, and 38 and then were given the 80B1, 2, 3 as they are known today.
    Other changes included:
The deletion of the "QA" designation (Somers and Vista were the only two departments to ever have a QA (Quick Attack) number). Somers initiated it, Vista perfected it.
All departments that had any sort of water vessel, whether it was a dinghy or a actual fire boat, were given "Marine" unit designators.
The "Tele Squirt" designation was deleted. The two squirts in the county (Millwood and Mohegan) became "engines".
Any apparatus not otherwise specified (Cascade, bus, RAC, etc) became "utilities".

JohnnyOV hopefully this answers some of your questions... Every call is a learning experience!! Prior to the arrival of TRT The first arriving Somers FD units surveyed the area and the hazard. Including shutting down running construction equipment and getting the other workers out of the trench. We knew right at the start that this is not an incident we can handle "by our selves" The TRT was called to assist immediately, in my mind the best thing we could do was try to stabilize the situation and try to keep it from getting worse. Rescue 20 was first due to this incident. The Rescue carries the equipment of a traditional heavy Rescue including air bags, struts, jacks, etc... We realized the need for shoring right away to prevent further collapse so we went to work with our "large" struts. Our Rescue does not carry plywood but in this case we were fortunate enough to have the custodial staff from the school come up with supplies. They found small pieces of plywood and for some of the shoring we even used old solid wood tables with no legs (adapt and overcome). The walls of the trench in the area of the victim were lined with the wood and our struts were placed in between to secure it. Im not sure about the specifics but after the victim was removed OSHA measured it at about 6 and a half feet deep. In this situation it appeared like only one side of the trench "caved in" the worker was pinned facing the other wall of the trench, he was upright but in an awkward position. When Somers units arrived on scene the dirt was about mid-chest high on the victim. Once FD units arrived on scene no one went into the trench until advanced resources arrived (TRT). 45M-2, Somers EMS, and the STAT Flight (Lifenet?) crew provided pt care from the un-collapsed side of the trench that the victim was pinned against. EMS did a great job in a tough situation. The Westchester County Technical Rescue Team arrived on scene with their apparatus and tons of manpower and were very professional. They further shored the trench and began the slow and tedious task of digging the victim out. All units worked well together and the rescue was a success.
This is just my insight into how the operation went... I hope through positive discussion we all can learn something.

For all the impatient and search impaired brethren...

Due to all of the rumors regarding the test I decided to submit a FOIL request to get the facts. Here is the response I received from HR.
    Quote
I am in receipt of your FOIL request, dated October 14th, regarding the Firefighter Examination #62-909 held March 5, 2011. You requested “the full results of the Firefighter Examination be posted in the public domain within the legal time limit of this FOIL request” and “an explanation of the delay in providing scores to candidates”.
Your request is granted. This department anticipates establishing a new eligible list for Firefighter on or about November 2, 2011. Individual grades will be mailed to candidates, and the new eligible list will be available to the public for review at our HR Reception Desk or via FOIL. A copy of the eligible will be e-mailed to you. As per your FOIL request, this date is “within the legal time limit of this FOIL request”. The Freedom of Information Law mandates the time frames for acknowledgments of FOIL requests (five business days), and up to twenty business days from acknowledgment to grant or deny the request for information.
As for “an explanation of the delay”, although not required by the Freedom of Information Law, please be advised that the current eligible list for Firefighter was established on 11/2/07 and is valid until 11/1/2011. This list has 418 eligible candidates on it. Fire Districts are required to use this list until November 1st. 2011. The establishment of the new list was scheduled so candidates would not lose time from their four year eligibility period.

I'm not one for semantics, but does it really matter when they come out, just as long as its before the new list goes into effect? Even if we got them 6 months ago, or even on the date of the exam, we still need to wait for the current list to expire.
However well you did on the test should not effect your life until your name is called to attend the academy. You might want to be a career firemen (as it is my dream as well) but make sure you have a well thought out contingency plan. Set yourself up with a job doing something different, and settle your life. View the exam as "whats done is done," and totally forget about it. Don't put all your eggs into one basket and be severely let down, when there could have been a better opportunity laid out right in front of you.
