Is grabbing the attention of drivers what we actually want? Or do we want to warn them and get them to avoid the area safely. Ever here that you will walk or steer in the direction you are looking? Or how about how is the lighting going to effect other drivers vision on approach or passing the scene. I've been washed out and couldn't see anything in a light rain just from a LED strip in the rear window of a car not so long ago. You want good visibility? Sometimes more isn't the answer. Go with amber.

Today I had the opportunity to go down to Manhattan with rfdu39. We got to stop by some firehouses, the FDNY Fire Museum and Firefighter Appreciation Weekend at the Intrepid. I invite others to post their pictures from the intrepid event on this topic too. Hope you enjoy them.
As always, please give me a rep or comment if you like these photos. It really is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Driving home from work and I saw black smoke billowing into the sky. I happen to be right in the vicinity so I parked away from the scene and got my carmera. Great Job Fairview!

I agree with both of you guys. If you arent doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worrie about. Also, something like a simple wave tells these guys that you see them and are a friendly, same as waving at a cop car on the road, usually I get a wave back and left alone.

If there are too many cops on the Hudson, We could send the "extras" to Washington DC to relieve the FF's who are watching the hi-crime areas.
Now we can put the DC FF's back in ambulances where some think they belong.
Now we can send those ambulances to the Hudson River to handle he rise in boating accidents caused by the diminished police presence.
(Ha! You thought Barak Obama was the only one who could come up with plans like this.)

I'm not so sure I entirely agree with the sentiment that more lights can't really hurt anything.
Perhaps it is because I work exclusively at night time or perhaps simply because I have had this happen to me several times over the past month or so, but I find that excessive lighting (emergency lighting, that is) can make it very difficult to see. Especially in the instance of some of the very fast LED flash patterns that seem to have become very popular, going from using relative night vision while driving to a scene to, all of a sudden, having to cope with extremely bright flashing lights can be very difficult--so much as to potentially make initially assessing a scene nearly impossible. I actually had an experience recently where, upon arriving at a call, was literally blinded by several flashing LED lightbars to the extent that my partner and I actually entered the driveway next to the one of our patient's (they were directly next to each other) because we simply could not see.
While I feel LED's are fantastic for the daytime where traditional warning lights are very easy for people to not notice, I'm still not convinced that they are the best option outright. Perhaps more old-fashioned options or a combination of them with some LED's is worth considering?

I think that a signal-stat flashing lollipop in the grill should suffice; that combined with the vehicles factory supplied four-way flashers would cover your rear.
Guess I'm old fashioned as well.

  19. FFEMT150 liked a post in a topic by spin_the_wheel in Signs, signs everywhere a sign...sizeup.
Here's a neat sign from a fire we had a week or so ago. A F/F on scene said this was a perfect slide at a sizeup class. Agreed. Something this simple can tell you alot about who could be in this home.
Upon arrival it could not be confirmed that everyone was out of the house. This simple set of signs on the lamp post in the front yard gives you a good start. Looks like you have at least 3 kids in this home. You now know thier first names as well, the IC can relay their names to the search crews, who now can call out the kids names now. maybe they react different to hearing their individual names if they are hidding somewhere.
You have their pictures, scan the crowds or neighbors homes, you may find them with help from the pictures in front of you. Of course the signs may be a few years old, but you could tell by the conditon of the signs, plus Im sure they would probably be in the same ballpark of age as shown on the photos.
You never know what simple signs are right in front of your eyes while doing a sizeup. Slow down and take a moment to look at everything you see.
The Mother and 3 kids were at a neighbors home.

Respectfully disagree Cap. I think too many lights can actually be a safety hazard/.

This truck is extreme overkill, yep, you definitely see it i'm sure, but i'm not so sure you're going to see anything else with this thing parked somewhere. I'm all about woo woo's, but someone made the comment of the "cost" issue with some departments that have to scavenge for simple safety items for their members while other departments blow their money on excessive items. Granted, I understand how budgets work...use the money this year, otherwise you can't really justify asking for the same amount next year. But maybe some of us can look at ourselves and be big boys and girls and say, you know what? i think we can cut back a little bit...
Yes, the truck looks good, and i don't necessarily know too much about this agency's jurisdiction, but i really would love to have been in the meeting where all this was being discussed. I doubt that at any point, was there ever so much of a concern about the cost.

As long as everyone made it out ok, that's the important thing. Fire apparatus can be replaced.
