    Ahh, I get it!
Run lights and sirens and make everyone move, just so we can get a good video!
All those people in the car's behind the rig must be thrilled... Not to mention scaring the piss out of Grandma and her dog at the end.

Why I try only comment on Police issues, there is a few things that need to addressed here:
1-Ballistic vests will not protect anyone from a .223cal round as was used in W.Webster
2-Vests serve zero protection from an explosive, and dosen't help with projectiles such as the case in Boston.
3-If there's a need for EMS to wear vests, because of the dangers of the job, than the EMS providers shouldn't be in any area until PD deems it safe.
4-EMS uniforms, are looking like more PD uniform's,especially with all the stitching and back panels, which is not a good idea, and can be unsafe.I have seen people walk up to them on Job's thinking they were the PD. NOT GOOD....
While I'm all for protection of everyone on a scene,I think EMS wearing PPE on calls especially MVA's is probably money better spent,I can telll you from over 30 years on the Job,a vest is not the answer to the problem, bottomline,if it isn't safe, you shouldn't be there.
So,I'm not sure of the justification for buying the vests???

    1) Yes but when the contract for sanitation ends in summer and they walk out in July. 3-5 weeks of garbage pilling up and the politicians cave on negotiations.
    2) Seeing as your retired EMS.....I remember friends leaving NYC*EMS for NYC Sanitation and at the time we joked that both wore green uniforms, both drove white trucks with flashing lights, both had to pick up garbage, but sanitation limited the weight and it was already out on the curb.

I could see this working great and a good cost saving measure. I just hope the town sticks to their word and doesn't lay anyone off.

Who cares what we think! We absolutely can come to a compromise, but the governor wants to do it his way or no way.

In the early morning of Monday January 7th 2013, Arlington was dispatched to 48 Raymond Ave for smoke in the Building. Units arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the duct work of the first floor business. Firefighters made entry to find a fire in the kitchen. Fire had also extended to the attached apartment building in the rear. Arlington had gotten reports of a resident in the apartments was trapped and could not exit the structure. While firefighters were locating and trying to put out the fire on the first floor, Firefighter Joe Tarquinio Jr. went to the rear of the building and made entry to the second floor to search. The rear door had to be forced open. He then made his way down the hallway in zero visibility and in deteriorating conditions, and found an unconscious male. He then radioed command and told 32-9 that he needed help getting the victim out. At that time Firefighter Bill Tompkins Jr. made his way to the 2nd floor to assist. The pair were able to get the male occupant out with some difficulty, as conditions were getting a lot worse. While this rescue was being made, other Arlington Firefighters were chasing fire through out the structure. Mutual Aid was received from the City of Poughkeepsie, Pleasant Valley, Roosevelt, Lagrange and New Hamburg Fire Departments. The fire is under investigation by the Arlington Fire District. Congratulations Group 4, JOB WELL DONE!

On arrival, we had heavy fire coming out of the D-side basement windows, the C-side entrance to the basement and fire showing on the first floor. Crews mounted an aggressive interior attack along with a brief exterior attack, using handlines in the basement, first floor and attic as well as the exterior. We pulled the men back briefly to hit it from outside and regroup, then pushed on with coordinated roof ventilation.
The occupants of the home included two elderly parties that were assisted from the home by other family members and a work crew at a neighboring house. I give credit to these guys for getting everyone out of the house, as this fire took off with great intensity and speed.
The report from the occupants and C&O indicate candles in the basement fell and created a fire involving the bed, books, and other combustibles in the room. The gentleman in the basement ran upstairs and got everyone out of the house. (Thank God).
I'd also like to point out the understated usefulness of our Mutual Aid Coordinators - not just ours (Battalion 10). As the IC I was able to worry only about my units on scene, and anything I needed relayed to 60 Control or any apparatus requests, all I had to do was have Battalion 10 handle it. I know a lot of Chiefs and Incident Commanders feel the need to try and do everything, but this way worked SOOOO MUCH BETTER than other times where I tried to juggle both task.
If you have a fire in this county and don't have the luxury of an Aide, take advantage of the MACs (Battalions). That's what they're there for - not to run your call but to help you manage it.
On behalf of the Croton Fire Department, I'd like to thank our Mutual Aid partners from Ossining, Montrose VA and Buchanan for their assistance on scene, as well as the coverage units from Montrose and Yorktown. Also, thanks to Croton, Cortlandt and Ossining EMS for being there.
Lastly, thanks to the men of the CFD that were there today. You guys always make me proud.
    Thanks.
    Chief John Munson
    Croton FD

  15. newsbuff liked a post in a topic by x635 in Mutual aid?
Simple. You know what you're getting. Usually 4 Interior certified firefighters, including a company officer, no matter what time of day or night. And you know it's going to take the volunteer at least 2-5 minutes to roll a truck, if no one is in the firehouse. Career gets out in less then 2, on average/
Nothing against the volunteers departments, but manpower attendance is a crapshoot. They could be the best department around, but daytime attendance to calls are hard. In many departments, DPW/Highway Departments staff the first due. Chances are the young guys aren't going to be around Friday or Saturday night. I know of few departments that have mutual aid standards, but more that don't. And what if that department can't get a crew? So now you'vr got an IC having to request anothers department, and he's been waiting for a company to arrive in 5 minutes, now they cant get a good head on the fire because they've been waiting for 15 minutes.
Also, career departments routinely train with each other, and are familiar with that city's challenges, firefighters, etc.
This has nothing to do with paid or volunteer. The IC wants to know what he is getting, and given FD staffing levels, it's manpower where everyone is on the same training and operation level.
If things are going to change, serious improvement needs to be made (like a college dorm program), and response attendance numbers need to be standard and quick. The way Westchester is right now, it's hard to be a volunteer.
