NASA managers have given a "go" for a countdown leading to the launch of the five suborbital sounding rockets early in the morning March 27 on a science mission that will briefly create a milky white cloud that may be visible to a large portion of the U.S. east coast. The launch window for the mission will be between 2 and 5 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27. The countdown will begin at 9 p.m. Monday, March 26. Clear skies are predicted for the Tuesday launch. However, ground level winds may exceed the allowable limits for the flights to occur. Web Cast and Ustream will begin at 10 p.m. Monday, March 26.

My contingency plan was asking to keep the helicopter at my house but I was promptly laughed out of the boss's office.
The idea for an eight month vacation didn't go over any better.
Rush hour will be the worst time in both directions but they are at least trying to "lessen the blow" with tow trucks (and I'm sure HELP trucks and additional SP) posted there to move disabled/accident vehicles as quickly as possible. That's about as proactive as you'll see in NY.

JetPhoto liked a post in a topic by peterose313 in NASA to launch 5 ATREX Rockets Between Saturday Night And April 3
Edit: Launch time will be between midnight and 3 am
Edit 2: Due to weather deteriorating and boats being uncooperative to stay out of the launch area they NASA has officially scrubbed the mission as of 0132 hrs. Due to expected weather conditions they will not be able to launch on Friday night. They will attempt again on Saturday as long as the weather is clear. If they do not have clear skies, they will be unable to launch. They will be doing a weather update tomorrow for Saturday as the current forecast called for a 40% chance of lightning for Saturday night. I wouldn't be surprised to see them scrub for Saturday as well and re-attempt for Sunday or Monday night.
Edit 3: NASA had a weather briefing yesterday and decided that due to inclement weather they will launch no sooner than Monday night. Their launch window will be from 12 am - 3 am Tuesday morning. I will continue to update this until they are finally able to launch.

Sorry for the crap quality. First time I've ever shot in there and to say the least the lighting/glass was not photo friendly but here's a couple shots I got. A good time was had by myself and the people I was with though and it looked like a lot of money was raised so thanks to the Village/Town of Mam'k fire depts for such an event. It was nice to see a large amount of support for a fallen firefighter's family.

Crappy quality as I didn't have my tripod with me so I was free handing at a pretty slow shutter speed even with a wide aperture. All the apparatus were under pretty low and harsh lighting.

Great stuff there, that's gotta be the first time I've ever seen a Volvo used as a police car. At least here in the US anyways.

Out of several dumb posts this one takes the cake. The members of this site LOVE photos and videos of fire scenes. Who do you think takes the overwhelming majority of pre arrival footage? So good, lets further the erosion of our rights to what end? So we can stop the recording of a few ill-informed observations of the general public?
And those comment! What a bunch a a-holes. What about their observations was so wrong. It took at least 6 minutes for the FD to arrive from less than 2 miles away. While not a bad response time by Westchester standards, still a long time to wait when your home is on fire. At this point is anyone still surprised people don't understand how little fire protection they have. They see a big firehouse full of vehicles and expect them to show up. Then they went on to mock the lack of PPE and firefighters. The very same things that members here have critiqued. We preach PPE, using the reach of the hose, and proper angles of attack because of the dangers inherent in car fires.
Speaking of the dangers of car fires, frequent poster and volunteer officer PFDRes47cue wants to slam them for staying back and waiting for the fire department to handle it. The nerve of these "cowards" recognizing a hazardous situation and waiting for the "professionals" to handle it. Why do we, cops and firefighters both, feel the pressing need to risk our safety just to dump $40 worth of dry chem into the grill of a car? The car is total loss. Open the car and trunk if possible, then step back and wait for a hose line.

Work in emergency services long enough and you will hear this repeatedly. The public always thinks they know better. Here is a clip from Southland:

Easy on the political rhetoric there. No matter how wrong you may feel it is, there are a lot of people who disagree. Seeing as how this board is predominantly NYC and the surrounding metropolitan area statistically most of this board is going to disagree with you. Even our Right leaning members are almost as likely to disagree with you. As long as abortion is legal (wether or not you agree with it) putting their information in a public database exposes these people to harassment and ridicule. Once its illegal, convict these people of a crime and you can post whatever information you want wherever you want.

peterose313 liked a post in a topic by efdcapt115 in 101st Airborne in the Fla. Keys
Yesterday was "Doctor Day," my visit to the doctor's office. It's about a 40 minute drive toward Key West from where we're at in the Keys. There's a great fishermen's cooperative out that way, so after the doc's we headed over for their famous "Lobster Ruben." The location couldn't be more scenic; right on the Bay-side, with outdoor seating in the shade.
I wasn't initially surprised to see two servicemen in combat fatigues. What I was surprised to see was the "101st Airborne" patches on their sleeves. As we sat down, I nodded to them and they gestured back in a friendly manner naturally. Soldiers are like that.
After lunch, I couldn't help myself, so I walked over and said "excuse me gentlemen, I'd just like to say thank you for your service to our country." We exchanged handshakes, and I told them I was a retired fireman. They were curious to know, so I told them where I had worked. They were so genuinely grateful for a simple gesture of thanks, I could just tell as we had a simple chat.
I was curious myself. I know most questions shouldn't be asked regarding operations, etc, but I gingerly said "101st Airborne. You guys are a long way from home." One responded (I was able to see his Lt. bar in the middle of his blouse, the other's I couldn't make out) that they had flown down from Atlanta for the day on a training mission, and they were so happy to be at such a beautiful place for lunch.
I felt inside such a feeling of happiness for them. I could imagine what these two soldiers of the United States Army had seen in the past ten years, and just the fact that they were able to be there, in that spot, having a great lunch......well most of us here on Bravo have not forgotten what our service members continue to sacrifice for the good of this nation, so you know what I mean.
So here's a salute to the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles." God Bless them, and all of our other service members, out there STILL fighting the fight, dying for us, protecting us from the evils that exist in the world today. If you see a service member, don't forget to say thanks.
NEVER FORGET!

We idolized and memorialized Whitney Houston, yet looked the other way concerning her well known substance abuse and tumultuous life with singer Bobby Brown.

substance abuser, an adulterer, sexually promiscuous and obnoxious.
Lindsay Lohan is 24 and her story is all over the news because she is a

I started the job in 1971, and didn't have to Google Charlie McCarthy.
On my interview, one of the questions was "I see you have 3 years of college. Do you plan on finishing college and leaving the FD for a real job?" Yes, things have changed.
Before somebody adds a post saying how dumb those old guys were, let me explain how all those changes came about. We, the old guys made the changes that you are sometimes taking for granted.
One of the first changes I recall was the great reliance on that red rubber booster line. After a few races to prove that it was faster and easiet to stretch 1 1/2" than it was to stretch the "red line," the old booster line became compartment space for something new.
Then we decided that it was rather stupid to keep thoae SCBAs in a suitcase. So along came air pak brackets and more compartment space. and so on and so on.
So, for the youth of the Fire service, remember that you aren't smarter than us old geezers. We gave you a lot of things to make the job easier and safer. So far, you may have contributed nothing, simply inherited it.
Tradition is not a bad thing. It's your responsibility to keep up the tradition in the Fire Service to make the job better and safer as those before you have done. Those SCBAs didn't come out of the suitcases because the Commissioner said it was a good idea.

Bullhead City runs two of these 2009 Spartan/Central/Rosenbauer 1500/400/75ft Quints. This will be first in Ladder company to Laughlin since Clark County Fire dispanded the Tower at their Laughlin station last year

Feels like I've been on the road for years. Actually, I have been. Since retiring from the job in '06, I left NY for South Carolina, and eventually wound up in Florida. It's been too long since I've been home. But I came home for a funeral of a beloved Great Uncle of our family. Uncle Vince served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and saw action in Europe for which he received recognition. He passed away at age 93. He was laid to rest in St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx.
Being back in NY after such a long time, is an incredible experience. First thing one realizes, is the scale and perception of this area changes when you're away for a long time. Westchester is tighter and smaller than ever. It makes me shake my head even more when I realize this small place has such a problem with combining fire service protection.
Then my Brothers from my former job caught a two-alarm fire in an OMD at two something in the morning the other night. They did a great job with aggressively attacking that fire, and keeping the damage to a minimum. The mutual aid companies also helped out. Great job by all.
Seeing family and friends has been such a wonderful experience. If you take all the people in your life for granted, go on the road for four or five years, and see how your perspective changes. Seeing Brothers I worked with has been an amazing time.
To wrap it up, there really is no place like home; especially when home is the greatest metropolis in the world; New York. I'm loving every single minute of this visit, every single minute spent with my dad, my uncles, all retired firemen. Thank God for family and friends.
Special thanks to Brother E. Lynch and the entire crew at 28/11 for their hospitality in my time of urgent need of a restroom! lol
Stay well everybody. Hug your family today, shake your friends hands, enjoy this world and the people God chose to be your family and friends. They are literally irreplaceable.
