I see the same issues being a LT. in my mid-20s. I had older members refuse to come to monthly training, live fire training, walk throughs, ect., and not come to the residential alarms, CO alarms, and service calls, but be the first one on the scene ready to go to work when the dispatch "sounds good".
As much as we need manpower and can use all the hands we can get, that member was told to do exterior support work or leave the scene.
Now I'm viewed as the hardass on a powertrip with no respect for all of the years of service 15-20 + year members put in, but at the end of the day, I know that the guys, who's ability I know and who I've trained side by side with, can be given tasks that will be completed efficiantly and more importantly, safely. At the end of the day, I cannot jepordize peoples safety by sending the 20 year guy, who has been in 50 + fires, but hasn't kept up with training, into a fire and hope he remembers what to do from his last worker 5 years ago.
Maybe I'm the a******, but at least I know safety will not be compromised

Why does it matter aside from maybe helping figure out what is wrong with the patient? Forget about how its just wrong to treat someone differently based upon a medical condition, what if they don't know they're carrying some disease. Everyone gets treated the same unless I suspect an infection requiring droplet precautions.

Yonkers should bring back neighborhood schooling. The busses that shuttle children to and from school every day that is funded by tax dollars needs to stop. Apparently it is "racist" to go to a school in your own neighborhood, so to rectify this "racism", they shuttle someone 15-20 minutes across the city to a school instead of letting the child go to a school that is within walking distance of thier home.

I can understand all of the thoughts on how to prevent another tragedy like this from happening, but the fact of the matter is, a great man is no longer with us, along with his wife and two teenage girls who barely began thier adult lives. Not to mention his son who survived the fire, but will have to live with out his home and more importantly his family. Pray for the Sullivan family and end the discussion. This happened one day ago!! Discussing the details and giving suggestions and ideas so soon is very disrespectful to the Sullivan family.

The main point of this rant is that Yonkers does not have their proirities straight. They have extremely busy fire and police departments, yet this is the first area they cut and instead of trying to find ways they can save money and spare jobs, they ask no questions and just layoff.
P.S. Where is all of this revenue from the red light cameras?

It has nothing to do with poor neighborhoods vs. wealthier neighborhoods and better schoold being located in better neighborhoods. Each school should have the same ciriculum and oppertunities for the students. There are also certain schools, such as the Charter School and Yonkers High with the I.B. program, that those honor students can be enrolled in. I just feel that there is no reason to bus a student across the city to get the same education as he could in his or her own neighborhood.
Its a total waste of tax dollars.
I don't want this discussion to go in the Yonkers Public School direction thought. I feel that is simply one way that tax dollars can be saved and jobs could be saved.

FF1 liked a post in a topic by Dinosaur in Yonkers Layoffs
How does busing rectify that? All we are accomplishing is moving kids all over the city but that doesn't speak to the quality of the education in any of the schools.
Shouldn't all schools be sustained so none of them are "failing"? Is it a better idea to bus all the "smart" kids to one school and bus all the "dumb" kids to another? That's no

FF1 liked a post in a topic by hudson144 in Carroll vs Mount Vernon
After a long 4 1/2 year battle the 2nd circuit ruled yesterday against me, the findings of the court basically say that because of lack of proof they would not rule in my favor. I know the truth, promotions were stopped by the request of the Vulcan Society and senior Black officers of the FDMV. The decision of my attorney to go for a summary judgement was because of the NH20 decision from our highest court. They stated that you can't hold back a list of white firefighters in fear of litagation alone. In my case the City Attorney at the time on federal EEOC forms stated that she didn't want to promote in fear of a lawsuit from the Vulcans. 3 days after the promotion was stopped the Vulcans very own attorney withdrew the complaint claiming that the review of the decree showed that there was no violation if the promotions of 2 white firefighters went ahead. The City Attorney did nothing but ignore the Vulcans Attorney and ordered the civil service commission to terminate the list even though it had 2 weeks to go before termination date. Facts are facts and we will go on knowing the truth and who was involved in this case. That same very attorney is now a city court judge and I pray that she doesn't rule on the bench because of race.
I have to say that I am proud that I stood up and fought this case, even though the results were not in my favor I realize that throughout the country racism is strong in the fire service, against white and black, females, asians, hispanics etc. The brotherhood that I am very proud to be a member of certainly has some issues. I will continue to serve the citizens of Mount Vernon to the best of my ability something that I swore that I would do. There is no other career that I would want to do. I also want to take this time to thank everyone for the donations, words of encouragement and just the support that I have recieved. Its been a long haul but well worth itThe world is round and someday those who were responsible for this mess will realize that.Again, thank you and be safe! FF Joseph J Carroll FDMV
