Not to be rude in anyway but the numbers are way up then they were back then..... For example if anyone came to our midland avenue fire back in march you would have saw the turnout we had with volunteers. Is there companies hurting yes of course everyone has their moments but i can guarantee you that the numbers are way up there.

Key words 'Years ago" Its very rare that a volunteer rig does not get out.

Even when dealt with a massive county wide emergency such as this weekend, you are always calm cool and collected on the radio. I personally would like to say thank you for making this storm run as smoothly as possible, even with the upwards of 120 backlogged calls you received on Saturday and the numerous working fires you were handling at any given time.
So, thanks guys... Be on the look out for a gift basket this winter

Dont agree at all... Sorry but Rye brook FD is a great accet to the Village Of Rye Brook residents and very helpful when thier is a fire call in rye brook and rigs are coming from downtown pc. Just think if thier is a fire in mid afternoon and rigs have to come from downtown pc with all the schools getting out and traffic on the road its safer and better that rye brook has a fd........ Also i would be careful what u say thier are rye brook fd personell on here just sayin.

Thanks for all of your help in my other thread in helping me look at options. I can now continue to pursue my lifelong dream. I look forward to seeing you all at the gate!

Nice job, just remember that hero pilots are the ones that land their plane on a run way everytime. Not the Hudson.

Best thing I ever did was get a college degree, in a field completely unrelated to anything fire. If your civil service tests don't work out, which they haven't so far for me, then you have a degree to fall back on. Taking civil service exams, are like dropping your resume off at businesses; don't limit yourself to just one option.

In my opinion your Mom is right. Get not only your Bachelors but an advanced degree now before family and work obligations get in the way. Most importantly do not expect that your experiences in firefighting and / or emergency services will be very similar to your predecessors. The one thing you can be sure of is that during your working life, the fire service, and in fact the world, will undergo enormous, and oftentimes, rapid change. A well rounded undergraduate and graduate degree will make you much more capable of anticipating and positioning yourself for the changes you will see. Don't limit yourself to a fire science degree either- you will be studying that stuff for promotion anyway- get the most well rounded education that you are able to- researching and writing, public speaking, government, history, psychology, technology, etc. are just basic skills which are necessary to function as an effective, progressive, fair leader in almost any field of endeavour. Consider a bachelor's in management, organizational leadership or some such with a minor in fire science or emergency management. After that you will have a better idea as to what to study for your Master's Degree.
Don't believe everyhting any of us in the Fire Service tell you (it's very hard to be objective about yourself)- seek out contrasting opinions, as you have done here. Spend time (such as in college) with people who have no connection to the fire service or emergency services. Learn from them too.
Realize that as a Firefighter you will be working with many dedicated, hard working people, but you will also be spending your life working alongside many who just want a decent civil service job and who do not have the same pride and work ethic that you do. This can prove to be a big shock and an enormous sense of dissapointment to a "gung-ho" young guy such as yourself. If you think you will be able to motivated these types and change their attitude, I would suggest that you first find a brick wall and bang your head against it as hard as you can a few times and make sure you enjoy that.

I was in music class when someone called the teacher and he told us there was a plane crash but never told us the extent (I was in 3rd grade so I think it's clear why the truth wasn't told), my school didn't close either which looking back on things I find strange. My main room teacher's father ran Grace Construction which was one of the companies asked to help in debris removal, as you can imagine things weren't peace and love in that class room. I wasn't told the truth until I had gotten home. The part that really scared me at that age was that I had wanted to be a pilot since the age of 3. Going from playing with US Airways airport play sets and pretending the dining room table was La Guardia and my room was Ft. Lauderdale to fearing getting on my favorite machine to visit grandparents in fear I was going to get hi jacked was what still remains drilled in me. I checked the cockpit on every single flight from then until about 7th grade. Clearly I wasn't a responder, but I thank everyone who helped out on those days, months and years to follow from the sincere bottom of my heart for what they did. Down here at flight school, we have to take a success class and one course component is about being tolerant of all different cultures. Do I think every Muslim/ Middle Eastern person is out there to get us? No. Do I agree with others that there are those out there looking to hurt us and we need to remain vigilant? Yes. Do I look at someone a certain way when I'm at an airport or on a plane because of how they look, Yes I do but I find it sad that events in our lives have led to that.
Just my .02 sorry for the rant....

For your very first post here maybe you should have introduced yourself, and given us an idea of your education. I'll go out on a limb and guess "multi-culturalism" is/was a big part of your college experience.
And let me ask you one question; were you 8, 9 or 10 on 9/11/2001?
    Welcome to the boards.

Might as well make designer fire gear as well... include interchangeable boots for the homes where the homeowners ask you to take your boots off before you come inside and check out the smoke condition...

No matter what anyone tells you, get documentation from as many specialists as you can and then go after the job. Have them be specific that this condition will in no way prohibit you from performing the tasks and meeting the standards required by the FDNY. If they deny you, appeal. People have been successful appealing the initial decision of the doc.

  23. efdcapt115 liked a post in a topic by voltage1256 in How many civilians actually know to move over or slow down?
I drove from Daytona Beach to Ft. Lauderdale today on I-95 and noticed if not every 10 miles, at least every 15 there was a sign on the side of the highway just like an exit sign, that was white and yellow and says "SLOW DOWN OR MOVE OVER FOR STOPPED EMERGENCY VEHICLES, IT'S THE LAW." I think it's nice to have, and to be honest, when I did see FHP on a traffic stop, people did move over or brake and slow down if they couldn't move. I know when New York first instated this law local news stations covered it to give the public an "announcement" about it, but I haven't really seen anyone abide by it. I am wondering does New York have plans to put up signs that remind drivers of the law? or have I just not seen them and they were put up? If they weren't..... what are we waiting for?
