Prince George's County, MD is at Pierce for the final inspection of HAZMAT 816. Due to the size of the county, PGFD's HAZMAT Team includes three stations. Station 816 (Northview) is located somewhat centrally within the county and has the larger HAZMAT rig. A Breathing Air Unit, Decon Unit, and the Safety Officer also run out of that house. Station 812 (College Park) and Station 845 (Marlboro/Croom) have smaller HAZMAT Support Units (similar to a soda truck) to get things started until 816 arrives. The Technical Rescue Team is set up in a similar fashion for collapse, confined space, and high angle; with a large cache of centralized equipment and two satellite stations.

A new policy has been established by the Career Department in Norwich. Perhaps this policy should have been established a long time ago.

In order to assure a faster response to an incident, if a second source is received or there are numerous calls reporting a fire within a building, the dispatchers are to now automatically dispatch the volunteer fire depts. assigned on the second alarm and they are to stage one block from the incident. If I have it correct, this response is usually made up of one engine from one volunteer dept, another engine co from another volunteer dept., plus one ladder from another volunteer dept, within the city.

It remains to be seen if the volunteer depts. will do the same. With very few exceptions, it is the Career dept that is usually the closest and certainly can get there the fastest throughout most of the city. Will "they" be likewise dispatched based on a second source or numerous calls ? I guess we'll find out when the time comes.

So far AMR has been fairly successful down in DC. Right now, DCFD is responding to all medicals. After the initial assessment, if it is determined to be a low priority call, then AMR is dispatched to take the patient. Not exactly the most efficient system, but DC is just dipping its feet into the use of private EMS, so I think this is a measured approach until AMR gains the city leadership's trust. The general consensus from DCFD members I've talked to is that AMR is doing a pretty good job freeing DCFD up for actual emergencies.

Does this mean when they do 911 calls in the future that Empress will be out of business? Because what makes you think that AMR isn't going to take Empress out of the big cities in Westchester?

What makes YOU think that they ARE?
In the past when cities have done business the new big guy in town, (Affiliated, Transcare) they have had issues- like the company disappearing.  No Empress ain't perfect but we have never just said AMF YOYO and gone home.
As a 29 year Empress guy, I heard similar stories about two decades ago when some other big multi-state company came in. Called Transcare.  Anyone remember Careline?  Another big company that bought up little ones and then died.

Anyhow, these guys are EMT's and medics just like anyone else. I welcome them to the street. Plenty of work for everyone.  I hope their bosses are good to them. Almost as a gag, I bought some Envision Stock so I  get their corporate shareholder reports and stuff.(so welcome, my new employees!) I also hope that down the road they may join our Union (IAEP) to help make sure their bosses don't unfairly tilt the playing field. Maybe we can do some charity events together.

They've recently have installed them on what was broadway.  That's what he ran into on 45th street and stopped him.  I'm not sure if they plan on putting them in on the 7th part of Times Square where he was able to drive onto the sidewalk.

Terrible tradegy  prayers to all the families

What a horrible occurrence. Thoughts and prayers are with the girl who was killed, and all those injured.

They need to close Times Square area to vehicular traffic, and/or install a system of barriers (like bollards) to reduce the chance of this occurring again. Something like this can happen so easily., and could be even worse. Imagine if he didn't hit that pole and was able to keep going farther.

I recall a few article from the past where departments did this.  I think it's an awesome, outside of the box idea!  Not only does it save the taxpayers money, but it makes the fire house fit into the neighborhood.  I think it looks a bit gawdy when a large, brick building is just plopped into the middle of a residential neighborhood.

Interesting story from the city I used to reside in. The city of Round Rock Texas is very progressive and proactive.
