Gotta admit, with this picture, it looks like an assault rifle. Anyone got any good info for the old piercing nozzle then??? LOL

Guys hate to burst your bubble but the portable version is deemed an "assault rifle" in NYS and thus illegal... It has a scary looking pistol grip... Can anyone see a bayonnet lug on there?

Coming from a maritime background, I can definitely see the benefit in having this for shipboard use. One major concern with shipboard fires is the amount of water and its impact on the displacement of the vessel. It can get to a point where the amount of water used and its weight in the bilge causes the vessel to become unstable and/or sink. Watertight compartments on ships also present another issue, being sealed and that the steel would not self vent as say a building would, the heat/gasses are held inside the fire room. Which as you could imagine leads to a greater chance of a back draft upon opening of the water tight door. having the ability to pierce the steel bulkhead and cool the room would be invaluable and absolutely reduce the risk a lot. Aside from industrial, ARFF and shipboard, depending on portability I could see a potential use for this in high rise firefighting. being able to get water in without exposure to the fire would make it that much safer.

I'd rather have that 120 pound woman than some of the 300+ pound guys I've seen on both career and volunteer departments.
But ideally, I'd rather have anyone that was mentally and physically capable of the job, regardless of whether they were female or not.
More to the point of the article, the idea that a sexist prank should cause us to recruit more females makes no sense. I've seen some females that can bust chops better than anyone and some that take it WAY beyond the scope. Its about having some respect and decency and understanding where the line stands.

FireMoose started this and I see a quote about putting the volunteers IN THE STATION. 100% absolutely true! Last year, Chester County (my home turf) enacted a dispatch change stipulating: Ambulance XX gets dispatched, if no response (I mean ON THE ROAD, not re-dispatch for driver, EMT, IV bag holder, etc), the next due gets dispatched. PERIOD. End of argument. There was a LOT of pushback in the rural western half of the county because, you guessed it, it takes at least 5 minutes to hop out of bed and drive to the station! I was at that meeting and I can tell you, those fire companies were told, in so many words "well, tear down your bar and/or your social hall and start building bunk rooms like the rest of us, or you'll be out of business in a year."
While my squad is now mostly paid staff, we have a strong and active volunteer contingent that MUST be in-house for their 6 or 12 hours and in uniform (identical to the paid staff since we're all there to do the same thing, save lives). The only time we page out for additional help is when we need to roll our bariatric truck or certain occasions when the duty crews will be committed to an incident for an extended period of time.

I mean no disrespect to any current, former or future LEO's but what's the rationale behind this? Retired cops are more trustworthy than law abiding citizens? Have a right to more protections? If the allowance is so that LEO's have better protection, does this not acknowledge that 10 rounds or less can be viewed as inadequate for personal defense? I'm sorry but none of us are any better than the citizens we protect, these are jobs, and just because we pass an entrance background check there are few guarantees we'll continue down the straight and narrow path.
This is more divide and conquer legislation, by ensuring LEO's are happy they'll be less likely to be opposed to other measures.

A traffic vest is a big difference from an SCBA
You are correct we don't know what info they got. If it was off duty FF's we would be saying the exact same thing.
So lets get ride of all PPE and training. We could just risk it to save someone.
As a supervisor, I have a responsability to my personnel to send them home at the end of the shift (or call). If we can save someone after evaluating and minimizing the risks (thru PPE) then lets do it otherwise we are not providing a service to the community.

Before reading the other responses all I could think of was would we have labeled this if they did not survive this incident. I bet its not "great job".

    Good Afternoon,
Throughout my time reading and posting on EMTBravo, I have seen several posts regarding civilian firearms ownership and NY Gun Laws. Recently, I became and NRA Certified Pistol and Rifle Instructor. I have been teaching NRA Certified Pistol Courses in Dutchess County, and have several more scheduled for the summer and fall. In December, my company will also be offering the Utach Concealed Carry Permit Course.
We conduct courses for people who are applying for their pistol permits (non-shooting) as well as Persons with pistol permits who wish to familiarize themselves with their firearms, or wish to upgrade their target and range permits to carry permits. We have state of the art training aids to help students learn pistol marksmanship skills. My goal as an instructor is to make competent, responsible, and most importantly SAFE shooters.
Attached is a course schedule. You can register via my website, www.NYPistolPermit.com, and if you mention EMTBravo, you will get a discount.
Also, if you are part of an organization who wishes to host a non-shooting course, contact me and we will work out a solution to use a safety course to raise funds for your organziation. Feel free to PM me on here, or email with any questions.

Forget false alarms. I'd like to issue a violation everytime someone dials 911 for something that CLEARLY ISN'T AN EMERGENCY. Seriously....that stomach ache you had for 3 days didn't become an emergency at 2am this morning......

Yes so am I. When I heard the call come out I was home and knew there was a meeting at that time and expected to hear them call out immediately yet it took over 5 minutes. Apparently they had the tables set up in the garage in front of the rig and had to move them (Nice weather and they wanted to have meeting outside)
Then there was confusion on whether EMT was taking call or not...typical backwoods junior high BS...

It took 6 minutes for an in-house crew to respond? I think I am confused on this part.

not sure if its over board or not but I think in the public interest that it is a good idea--the public are the people we are sworn to protect so thier faith in the department is paramount. Hopefully it is one bad apple we do not need the whole barrel to get a rotten stench to it because of the one incident. So better to be safe then sorry.
All departments do a arson background check why not a full criminal check.do we want felons or convicted child molesters in our departments or people that have committed crimes like burgulary or som kinf of home invasion.
How many department do a full background check?
I hope this is a isolated incident and everyone gets back to doing what they swore to do --- protect the publis the best that we can.

So first things first. Is there any update on the Rye cops who were transported from the CO call in Rye? I hope they are recovering well.
Is there anyone who can fill us in on this incident? On scene members who can help those who still believe this is a routine call. I am pretty sure I can figure out how things went here after responding to more CO calls than I can count. If this went the way I think it went it could have gone south real fast for those RPD members.

We were actually asked to vote on the new color scheme. A majority of the department picked this design over 2 others. It's usually tough to get cops excited about anything but guys are very excited to get the new cars on the road.

What'll happen the day after you have a fire 1500 ft from a hydrant? Why not just fill the bed at the outset, other than the obvious cost issue? We actually learned a newer method of laying LDH in the bed that allowed us to carry at least another 2 or 3 lengths to fit as much in without fear of it hanging up.
