Before I even attempted to read this garbage, I saw that these 2 windbags are from berkley and that was it for me.
You can't figure out how a city needs to be policed using mathmatic equations, you figure it out by working an early tour in my precinct in the middle of the summer during a heatwave.
There is no reason to give this report any creedence.
I say print it out and toss it in the circular file.

You're probably onto something. UC-Berkley professors and grad students probably came out, saw that cops actually arrested people instead of hugging them into compliance, and therefore determined its "over-policed." They will probably recommend mandatory retraining and have ESU repurposed to hand out lollypops and teddy bears to violent offenders, after all, they're just misunderstood, right?
I don't go to Yonkers often. Last time I was there a few words came to mind as I picked up my White Castle, and "over-policed" was certainly not one of them, quite in fact I don't think I've ever thought of a place as overly policed... but hey, what do I know, I'm not a Professor from one of the safest cities on the left coast.
Seriously though, HFD has a point, I wonder if these people ever actually rode along with YPD to see what they go through, or if this was purely based on a particular numbers game.

The fact that its a study out of the University of California-Berkley is the first problem.

I certainly agree "JetPhoto". Many times throughout this country acts similiar to this go on. Police Officers, firefighters, EMTs and even J.Q. Citizen do similiar acts, except they don't get caught on camera. I know one time where a group of firefighters gave a funeral to a homeless man who was found dead in a vacant lot.
This police officer wasn't a politician looking for a good photo opportunity. He wasn't even looking for a "pat on the back". He just happened to have a camera focused on him that he didn't even know was there.
This homeless individual could have maybe been a War Hero at one time. Maybe he lost his job. Maybe at one time he also helped others. Its just nice to know that we still do have some good people left like this NYPD Officer. And for those that thought it was funny seeing a guy with no shoes and socks to wear on a cold night, my wish is, "what comes around, goes around". And that someday, these wish azz individuals can get their bare feet laughed at.

We all know what this job is about. This is one place that tradition comes into play in a meaningful way, and I don't care to hear from the naysayers and that "200 years of tradition uninterrupted by progress. I'm not talking about tactics and strategy, fog vs. straight, PPA. Those things are not tradition. A firefighter''s helmet is a symbol of who he is or who he was. Whatever style of helmet he wore is not the operative here. The symbolism here is that it is HIS helmet. Wearing this helmet he has accomplished things that the average person could not ever fathom. He has seen life and he has seen death. He calls anyone who wears similar headgear his brother because he knows where that person has been. If a firefighter meets his death on the job, it is his helmet that leads him to his funeral service.
My father passed away, non-LODD, when I was 15 years old. His helmet was solemnly and ceremoniously presented to me by one of his brothers. When my first son got on the job, I presented him with that same helmet. When my second son got on the job, I presented him with my old helmet. Those helmets are kept in places of honor in their homes. Why? Because that helmet says "That's who we are."
Politicians, City Managers, the general public, and unfortunately, some firefighters don't understand the symbolism. As for the rest of us, "You can leave this job, but you can't leave this job behind"
So, then, is that stinky, strange-looking hat worth $100?

The firefighters were decontaminated via the elevated platform for the initial decontamination and then hosed down from a ground line.

As previouslly discussed on this site in the archived thread below, the General Ike has finally been completed and delivered to Florida as of yesterday. The biggest delay was finding the proper set of hose reels to replace the retro-fitted crosslays above the pump panel. A proper pair was located, restored and mounted. The 6v53 fired up on the first try, and around the block we went. Hoping to put some miles on this weekend. More pics to follow...

This article is an embarrassment to the job and more so to this disgrace of a firefighter. The article would have you believe that this is a dietary issue and that the other firefighters are making him feel like an outcast because of his dietary choices. I've never worked in that firehouse, but we all know what the firehouse kitchen is like. The kitchen is sacred in the firehouse. It's where a group of firefighters, working together for 24 hrs, come together as a unit, cook and eat. Everyone coming together is key to the cohesiveness of the firehouse. Not everyone likes what is put on the table every night and no one is forcing food down your throat. Plenty of people I work with don't eat shellfish or cheese and some guys ARE cutting down on their meat intake for health reasons. That's fine, but everyone still pays and everyone still cooks. If nothing else, it's a highly important symbolic activity. We have a rule, if you're "out on the meal" then that's it, you're out.
Don't be fooled by the NY Post rhetoric or this guys nonsense story. The trouble didn't start because one person decided to change their diet. It began when that one person decided that the whole firehouse and a sacred aspect of it's culture had to change for him. We drill together, we laugh together, we eat together and we put ourselves in harms way together. You can't shun one of those things and expect everyone to maintain the same level of respect for you.
If any serious credence is lent to this story, it will be one more slide down the tube for society.

We went down without hesitation, slept on cots, sat in the dark, ate PB&J for four days, cleaned the firehouses, ran many calls. I took a bunch of pictures. There was damage that hasn't been seen in many years, if ever and going down and being able to help was an honor and a privilege that I'll never forget. I took the photos to remember it. The firefighters and residents were extremely grateful to see us and took pictures with us.

While in Maryland this week for a class, I came across this apartment complex structure fire. The complex, Seven Oaks, is directly across the street from Fort Meade and NSA facilities and many of the residents are Military families, although it wasn't clear to me if any of the apartments/buildings involved were Military or non-Military residents.
Sorry for the quality, I took the pics on my cell phone, as I had no camera with me.
Edit: Mods, if you could rotate the photos, I'd appreciate it. I cannot seem to do so.

Yup, Same thing down here. Parties for the deceased (usually a thug) always end up with someone stabbed or shot and of course out of the 100 + people on scene nobody saw anything.
