No, they are not using digital encryption. Apparently they have switched to P25 digital for the PD. See the thread at http://forums.radioreference.com/new-york-radio-discussion-forum/254004-white-plains-police-department-westchester-county-ny.html for more info.

I haven't seen this show yet but it looks interesting http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/gearz-volunteer-fire-truck/EP009027990079?aid=zap2it. While driving on I287 this week I took this picture of something which I had never seen before. A soda truck displaying a DOT HazMat placard.

One of the reasons I can think of for this scenario is that the truck was carrying more than 1,001 pounds of possibly carbon dioxide gas for a soda dispenser at a bar or restaurant.
While speaking about hazmat, here is a useful link regarding DOT placard requirements http://www.phmsa.dot...ng/Chart 14.pdf.
Another informative DOT link is at http://www.phe.gov/e...es/default.aspx.
And lastly here is the link for the online 2012 Emergency Response Guide http://phmsa.dot.gov...mat/ERG2012.pdf.

While out on Long Island last week I caught a glimpse of two unusual "Fire Hydrants" (if that is what they are). They are both located in Mattituck, L.I. along Route 25 (North Fork). I have never seen these before and could not find any info about them online. Here are the pictures:

As you can see in the second to last picture the device attached to the "Hydrant" is marked with "Duraline C.I.,N.Y". and in the last picture "Duraline Central Islip NY" is clearly visible.
Anyone have any info on these?

I just finished my refresher HazMat First Responder Ops. class Tuesday night. One of the things suggested for evacuations is if a person refuses to leave the area, provide him/her with a permanent magic marker to write their name, social security number, and a contact number on their body. This way when the body is recovered the appropriate people can be notified.

The "reserved's" without a Department name are only in the Ladder & Tower Ladder lists. The list reflects that there should only be either a Ladder or a Tower Ladder with any single number. When Ossining FD got their TL, the previously assigned L42 designation was placed into "reserved" so that no future L42 would be assigned as long as OFD has TL42. This is not always the case, the lower numbers still reflect when both TL's & Lad's were assigned the same number.

It would have to hit quite a bit farther South to have less impact on us. From the NOAA website - Hurricane Basics http://hurricanes.noaa.gov/pdf/hurricanebook.pdf page ten states that the right side of a hurricane is the most dangerous.
A hurricane is a low pressure system that in the Northern hemisphere rotates counter-clockwise. This counter-clockwise rotation combined with the forward motion (typically Northward) means that the combined wind speed is faster on the right side (East) and slower on the left side (West). See the above noted link for more detailed info.
Let's all stay safe out there.

Ah-ha, the elephant in the room. The question becomes, will FDNY ever ACTUALLY request those departments to respond in for the next major incident? I'd have to imagine if they don't pre-plan with these departments, they don't anticipate using them in an emergency. 12,000 firefighters and add the manpower of the neighboring career departments in Westchester and NJ, would they need those volunteer departments? It would seem that they don't think so.
I don't speak for the FDNY, but it would seem their stance on the issue is this: If you don't meet the standards they set, you don't get to come into the city. Period.
Go back to your NIMS training: Resource typing, credentialing, standardization. These aren't just stupid buzz words some bureaucrat at FEMA came up with. If you're an IC and you're requesting resources, you need to know what is coming. Not just the type of truck and the equipment on it, but the personnel and their qualifications. You need to know that those individuals are properly trained to operate in the functions you're requesting them for. Anything less than that is just not acceptable.
When you write an emergency plan you start with planning assumptions. This sets the baseline for your plan and your expectations. Why would you take in resources that do not fit within the basic minimum planning assumptions? That would be setting yourself up for failure.

Here we go again with this Paid vs. Volunteer nonsense. If the responding department meets all of the FDNY qualifications, it should NOT matter if the department is PAID or NOT PAID !!! (and yes, one set of standards should be required for all departments, whether or not it is a PAID Department of Volunteer). - Everyone needs to "CHECK THEIR EGO'S AT THE DOOR"

To be fair to everyone that joins, or for that matter, gets hired by a fire department - we should lay it all on the line the second they come to us. Let them know that they are expected to participate in xx amount of drills, xx amount of courses, etc. Let them know that if they don't come around to learn, that they will lose their privileges (freeloads at the volley house, OT details at work, etc.) and the respect of their colleagues. Of course you won't get through to the cement-heads, but if you set precedence up front, they can't claim they didn't know...
...A mistake I am sure most of us have made.
I am sure there's guys in my department counting down the days until I am out. But the number of people that call, text, email and talk to me asking how they can get in a class, when we're doing a drill, etc. far exceeds that number. (I think / hope).
As Aristole said, "Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting in a particular way." If we keep training to do our jobs, we'll become excellent at it when we need to be.

Been there, done that, and thirty years later, I'm still doing that. I am continually stressing training in my Company/FD. For over thirty years (with eleven years as an Officer in my current FD) I have seen the same thing you are talking about.
The way I have done it, is to keep taking training courses. Go to seminars. Go to trade shows (http://newenglandfirechiefs.org/page.asp_Q_navigationid_E_1) is a good one I have gone to a couple of times. Keep learning. The more training you personally acquire, the more confidence you will have to pass this knowledge you learn to newer (and hopefully senior) members. The acquisition of knowledge will help you back up your position and hopefully get the respect of all members of your FD. With this respect comes the ability to hopefully change attitudes. It takes time, and I remember way back then (when I had five years in the FD) I was just like you. It just takes time.
Even with thirty years in my FD, I still attend at least one or two courses at the County Training Center each year, and attend trade show/seminars.
Expect to keep banging your head against the proverbial wall. That's what helmets are for .
