Trusses keep getting a bad rap. The manufacturers, transporters, and building trades go to great lengths to insure their structural integrity.

    BEWARE THE TRUSS!

Does anyone have the break down of when the inital call went in, when the first piece of fire equipment (fire engine) responded, and when the first unit was on scene. As well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd dispatches?

Sorry Nate, i was lead to believe you were a career guy as per your profile. I am not well versed in VFD ops. So you are saying 25mins (15+10) before u arrived on scene and the house under construction was not well involved yet? Where was the first line placed that the stairs collapsed the 10 min you were performing your search? The link you gave is the same as before (CMC MPD). Which one did you bail out the window with? 1st was MPD, then something similar, now it is the rescue 8.
Yup Pasquals, that was it. What year did you graduate from WSS? Heard the skiing was good up there in Park City.

The CMC MPD as per CMC.
At this time, the MPD can only be used with ½” rope. We are planning on introducing one at a later date that would work with 7/16” rope. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Ok, I lost about 2min of sleep over this last night but it was enough to get me wondering.
First you had 50ft then 100ft of rope. Which one is it?
Second, you were low on O2, was this a EMS call? (i'll give ya this b/c thats what 1st day probies and news casters say)
Third, Construction workers did the primary until the fire extended out of the room but yet 25 min when you arrived on scene the flames had not extended until you were upstairs searching? (which also collapsed the stairs right?)
Who in their right mind would tie themselves UP in a tree during a wildland fire? We do not get alot of wildland fires here but every pic I see the trees are pretty much destroyed.( Heat rises no?)
You say you spent $40 bucks on a bailout system(50 or 100ft of rope?, biner and bag) but yet have no clue what your device costs? but it uses 12.5-13mm (1/2")rope. You gave a link and said this is the EXACT system but yet the MPD is still there?
One of the only guys interior qualified on scene but yet 4 others (you + 2 + 2 on 1st line) were inside with you. Why would you usually be the OV man when you are interior qualified? Sorry, you have been going on MVA's and rescue calls.
Nate, I can not say if you did or did not have to bail only you and the other two guys know. There seems to be a lot of holes in this story. I can not speak for everyone but I take my job VERY VERY seriously. Do not portray yourself as someone you're not. Your profile states you as a career FF but you have clearly stated otherwise, why is that? I'm curious that I can't seem to recall anything on FF close-calls about someone in the Sante FE area bailing out. Maybe it didn't make it but A LOT do make it. Once again thanks for your story Nate. I'm out

In his shoes by being pissed off that a kid was not listening or fearing for his life as though the kid was going to hurt the officer. My kids don't listen so I have been in those shoes. I have never chased a criminal so I haven't been in those. I did not see a video of it so was the kid streaking! If so that should rule out concealed weapons, except if he was hiding something in the coin slot.

It's funny it seems to me like it's always volunteer firemen or volunteer ems workers who take the time to monday morning quaterback or second guess what the police do...
Do you ever see the cops on here saying things like " I think it was excessive that those vollies had 6 trucks at that fire and they wasted all that water just to save that foundation." WE don't say stuff like that because we have no training or experience in fighting fires just like you have no training or experience in law enforcement.
Before you guys get all in a huff I'm just trying to prove a point, I actually have a lot of respect for you guys who go out there and do it for free.
With that being said, unless you are a cop or you have ever been a cop you really shouldn't be second guessing what a cop does.
If that cop had tackled that kid there is a possibility that they both could have been hurt and then everyone would have been screaming police brutality and then they would be complaining that it cost the city money because now the cop is out injured and it's creating overtime.
Everyone loves you guys, but unlike you WE CAN'T WIN , we are damned if we do and we are damned if we don't.
Deploying the taser in this situation is exactly what they are for, it put a safe end to the situation for everyone. This little punk will not suffer any ill effects from the taser and I can assure you he will think twice before he does something stupid like this again.

Not an "arm chair quarterback" but would have done the samething...not a fan of chasing someone for that amount of time..as I say at work I'm fat and don't like to run.

    Yikes....a tiller AND a quint...
...seems like someone set out to win the most over complicated apparatus award. At some point, IMHO, we're trying to do too much with one vehicle. We're getting so complex that we get to a point where we have something that does everything, but nothing well. It carries tons of equipment, but it's too big to manage, ect. ect. There are other examples for sure. Tillers are lousy for the volunteer service, as it's difficult enough to get drivers. Now we need two? Not a good plan. Tractor trailers are too big for most urban environments. They're just too ungainly to navigate during emergency response. A tractor trailer unit might make sense for a special unit designed for limited responses or prolonged operations, but thats it. An example of another approach would be Hazmat 1 in NYC. They simply use two rigs for a response.
Lastly, Quints suck. They are little more than a band-aide that allows politicians to give us fewer pieces of equipment and short change us on manpower. They fall into the over-complicated catagory. Is it an engine? Is it a truck? From the firefighters perspective, what is your job a particular fire? From a management perspective, "who's doing what?" When you have engines and trucks coming in, the chief knows what is happening because everyone's positions are clearly defined. Most bread and butter jobs are well underway before the chief even arrives.
    Okay....rant over.

I have to agree with JFLYNN, speculation will not help us. I'd even go further to say, that while all texts, programs and training are quick to point out secondary devices and warn first responders of ongoing dangers, our risk is likely still no greater than the typical American. We are informed responders, we should never be unsuspecting victims. This obviously is an across the board statement, as the dangers of this job do not start nor end with things that go boom. Those who think they know it all should leave emergency work now and stop burdeneing us with their complacency.
Causing death to emergency forces will strike no more fear into the country as a whole, than hurting civilians. We're still considered by many to have assumed heighten risks that accompany running toward emergencies when the public runs away. So while it's smart or even required to be fully aware situationally, I hesitate to consider us actual premeditated targets.

This is an issue that should be examined closely. This could very nearly have been a tremendous disaster. No one can tell exactly how many people would have been killed had this bomb functioned properly and the psychological ramifications would be extensive, bringing a fear that lurks in the back of our minds to the surface very violently. The police officer who responded to the vehicle was peering through the windows before realizing what was contained within. That's a little closer to a bomb than I can imagine most of us ever wanting to be. Supposedly did a great job at moving people away and bringing the necessary NYPD Bomb Squad and FDNY units.
As terrible a reality as it is, this is something that we, as emergency responders, need to be very aware of today. Furthermore, there has been some scuttle about the intended method of detonation and whether or not the smoke was intentional as a device to lure responders. If there is any validity to that theory, imagine the process. Device creates smoke, brings responders and then the primary device detonates. What a terrible event....
The reality is, there are very sick people who come up with intricate ways to kill lots of people and specific people. Be safe and cautious and try not to let ever present complacency effect your level of preparedness.

Oh it's no concept...it's a very real thing...a storied part of that thing so many are working to destroy...yep...tradition!
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the vollie side........Some Chiefs really need to trust their senior guys more...trust their judgements and their actions...don't microf'ingmanage everything!!!!!!
I also know that the term "senior man" refers to two totally different things when comparing volunteer to career....same "concept"....but very, very different.
