Since this is an active firehouse, it is fitting to show you what's on the main floor. Unfortunately I was not able to get up to the crew quarters on the second floor since I was press for time to catch my train.
    Engine 3

Engine 52 (LDH Water Supply Wagon)

DCFD runs 4 men on an engine, 5 on trucks and 5 on the rescues as well as staffing additional units. Since Engine 3 is a "water supply company" they run a second "wagon" with LDH instead of three inch supply line. The day I was there, Engine 3 was heavy with a staffing of 5, so one member stayed behind with the wagon. If there is a four member crew, one member comes off the engine and drives the hose wagon to the scene together. If Engine 3 is out on an alarm with no one in the firehouse left behind, another company will pick up this unit and response to the scene with it. Also it is available to be staffed upon call back for large incidents.
If you get a chance to go down and visit our Capitol, definitely pay a visit. Just one suggestion, go in the spring or fall as it's really humid down there this time of year!
    Hope you enjoyed the pics!

This is the meeting room for for the FFA and its contents.

Response proclamation of DCFD and FFA to the Pentagon September 11, 2001.

The Constitution and By-Laws of the Columbia Fire Company.

A really neat picture of DC's ten Hahn fire engines shortly after their delivery and lined up in front of their most famous first due building. This was the biggest single order of apparatus at one time by what I was told.

This is what caught my eye. How many "stove pipe" leather parade hats are left in existence? Here is a few and three of them are from the Columbia, Hibernia and Franklin companies of Washington (if my memory serve me correctly from the tour).

The helmet on the top right rack in this picture was given to the Washington firemen from a chief of Baltimore during the Great Fire in their town. DC's firemen went to assist their brothers in Baltimore when the call came out. The helmet was given in appreciation of their response. After loading up their equipment on a train, the DC firemen arrive in Baltimore in 30 minutes at full steam. Quite a speed back then.

DCFD members used leather helmets then switched to the aluminum Senators for a while. Then they switched to the old "duck-bill" style then to a more modern Carins composite. Now members can wear their own leather helmets as long as its an approved one by OSHA (there is that four-lettered dirty word!! ).

This is right in my back yard, literally. There are a lot of questions, doubt ect. that need to be answered. I know a lot of people, we all hope this is untrue, however there are a lot of questions being raised about this allegation right now. One red flag is the accuser waited two, three days according to the NH Register article in today's edition, nor said anything in the ER about it.Of course I'm not saying that if true she didn't do the right thing, there is the embarrassment factor as well as the anguish suffered with the alleged assault.
Everything has to be looked at carefully by the investigators. Also the medic is well known and very good at his profession.
I pray this isn't true and EVERYTHING was documented on the run form what was being done for treatment.

Isn't that what every apparatus operator is taught to do before they are cleared or at least ask the dispatcher where the hydrant is????

For a call of an inbound aircraft with smoke in the cockpit:
ARFF Unit: "Aircraft ###, confirm smoke in the cockpit."
Aircraft: "### Confirming smoke in the cockpit."
ARFF Unit: "Roger, awaiting your arrival."
    **30 seconds later**
Aircraft: "Disregard, we turned it off."

Very sad, no words can describe. One gentleman that I recently went to FO-1 class with works out of Engine 4, I do not know if he was on shift. My thoughts to the family and the brother and sisters of SFRD.

It appears that the cause of the fire were hot embers improperly disposed of. Stamford just had a press conference

I read this thread yesterday and have been following the discussion for a day and now feel compelled to add my opinion. It is disappointing that a member of this site asks a simple question about the status of a piece of apparatus which has been placed out of service due to fire and the automatic responses that are generated turn immediately to why does this department need this truck?
The funny thing is that rarely are the one’s questioning the needs of (fill in the blank) Fire Department, at all associated with that department – so how would you know what their communities specific needs are?
As example, I wouldn’t question why one department – of which I have no affiliation with or knowledge of their needs - has 3 ladder trucks even though they are surrounded by departments with ladder trucks on every side of their community – because it’s not my place to. If that department has determined that is what they need to do their job, I trust that their leadership has made an educated decision and that they are not just stroking their egos.
Ironically, it’s double edged sword here as well; a northern department is questioned why so much mutual aid is needed at a house fire, but another department that is self-sufficient is accused of wasting tax payer dollars and questioned why they need this truck or that truck instead of using more mutual aid. It doesn’t make sense; it’s ludicrous.
There was an interesting article on here lately about the fire service and its changing nature; how departments are being asked to respond to new situations and different types of emergencies all the time. Proper response to these new challenges often requires newer tools, gear and equipment to effectively mitigate these hazards; which in turn often means purchasing a newer and larger truck to carry this equipment and get the job done.
So - why does this town need this truck? Because their membership and commissioners and potentially their insurance agency have determined it is necessary for their district and their firefighters to do their job effectively.
This, of course, is not the first time that others who think they know what is best for everyone else interject their own beliefs or who knows maybe even their envy at some other departments rolling stock and I’m sure it won’t be the last – but still it’s disappointing; it is one of the reasons I seldom participate on this site any longer.
Periodically someone on this site will post something about making this site what we want it to be – a place where positive discussion can take place and where people can learn. But that doesn’t happen; the forcing of agendas continues. Then there is the occasional thread that asks why member participation is down on this site and I think to myself in response to that question, I can’t imagine why someone would feel compelled to post something here when others with agendas, or egos, or envy, or whatever pick apart every detail of every call, decision and comment made. It really is disappointing.
