For the highway, hazmats and other areas of the town where there were long hose lays I believe was the original intentions. I have to search the forum archives when it was located to Norwalk. Unless Joe C. can explain the ET's use better.

Thanks capt, did not know they were that common out there too.
Britt Crosby runs a great site with all of the Cape and Islands FDs (www.capecodfd.com) information and pictures. Britt recently retired from C-O-MM (Centerville, Osterville, Marston Mills) Fire District. Great site to check out.

So if FDNY EMS it required by their protocols to have turnout gear due to countless hazards at fires, hazmat situations, ect. they can possibly encounter, where you going to put it on the rig? In the compartment with the backboards, next to the size M O2 tank, in the patient compartment? There is hardly any room on some of the newer ambulances in regards to compartment space for gear storage.
Yah maybe they were fine the past few decades with out running gear but this in now, ten years ago was history and you should learn from history. That's like say a cop is better off with a six shot revolver than a 10 to 15 shot clip in a semi-auto pistol because they worked fine with it for decades.
Just because your agency is fine with what you run and how you run, then that's fine, also an opinion is fine. There is some things that other places that don't sit well with me either, but hey, that's what they want and need. However the City has their ways of operating just like any other agency we are all involved with. They realized a reason for the new design and maybe it works for them. Plus they are hell of a lot more prone to other hazards everyday the East Bumble-dump.
(Sorry realized my spelling sucks still).

By the way the articles were written and what I heard on the tactical channel, I would guess she had to be 100 feet from the ground level base. The LT was coming from the ground level up and he fell approx 60 to 70 feet, he was on the way up to her but never reached her. One firefighter that was also hurt saw shielding the LT from the falling rocks after he feel and the 3rd FF was transported for other medical reasons. I'm only going off what I have read so far and the CTNOW.com interview.
Good job by all involved and both climbers (the one who was stuck and the other one) have been charged with reckless endangerment and a also for violating the ordinance prohibiting climbing East Rock. Go figure both are Yale students (seems like the NHFD boys and girls are always taking them off that rock face).

Thank you all very much for the very kind words and "PMs" I recieved. They mean so much. Its nice to know that there are friends out there that care so much. Some of who I don't even know.
One of the "PMs" I recieved was from a member in Texas. He had told me how his wife of 33 years had passed away from cancer on Christmas Day 8 years ago.
An E-mail I recieved from a good friend of mine who was a retired Bridgeport, Ct Firefighter and later became a Deputy Chief in Fairfield, Ct told me how he lost his wife, Kathy, two and a half years ago. Every month he goes to the cemetary on her monthly anniversary to visit her.
On another web site I recieved a "PM" from a Firefighter in Waterbury, Ct of how his then 15 year old son was diagonised with brain cancer. His son is now 21 years old and about to enter the United States Air Force to defend Our Country. He was treated in Boston using the "Jimmy Fund".
When I as a "Probie Firefighter" in Norwich, Ct I remember catching a small one or two room fire. It was pretty hot, and smokey. The guy on the line with me kept saying; "Move in, don't give up, don't give up". And that's what we have to do with this cancer. "Don't Give Up".
There has been a huge amount of progress with this cancer battle. When my wife Helen first got this cancer in November, 2009 we were told that her lung cancer had already spread to her brain. There were six spots that had to be taken care of. We made the trip to Yale New Haven Hospital where they used a new machine called "Gamma Knife Radiation". There they were able to completely get rid of those tumors and it was fairly painless. That machine had only been developed a few years earlier in Pittsburgh. If it had been a few years earlier, she wouldn't have had a chance. It gave us more time together. But we sure still have a long way to go. This battle is by far over. Cancer is affecting so many people these days.
I guess what I really want to say is please try to help the best you can when it comes to donations like The Cancer Society, or the Jimmy Fund. They have made a huge difference over the years. But there is still a long way to go.
I do want to mention that my wife Helen donated her eyes to the National Eye Bank at the time of her death, so that rght now, someone who was NOT able to see, can now see. I am told that at some point I will recieve a letter describing the person who recieved this gift. When I do, I will be sure to pass it on.
Again, Thank you so much for your concern and kind words. And "Pumpkin" I Love you so much. I'm sure gonna miss you. Rest in Peace "Punk".

But that is why I do, I'm a biker and have been for a long time. The whole show was about building bikes, that was the original intention of the show. They have made some great bikes together without question (regardless if you consider them an assembler, builder or fabricator; there is a difference between the 3). If it wasn't for Mikey having that chance meeting with someone who was associated with Discovery , then there wouldn't have been a show. If it wasn't for the dynamic, good and bad, that happened between Sr. and Jr. then what would the show be? A lot of if ands and whats but unfortunately that is what made the show. Not the Fire, Police, POW, Jet or Black Widow bikes, the BS in fighting fighting took over and the hiring of a couple of not talent dweebs took over. Put Vinnie, Rick, Christian and Cody in a shop together and watch what they can do. They don't need a computer, that's not how Indian Larry or Dave Perowitz did it.
I don't know about anyone else, but what if there was a father son fire engine / police car / ambulance building company show with the same dynamic as Sr. and Jr. I bet everyone a good here would be up in arms about them showing that dynamic and stating how bad it is for emergency services. It's kinda done the same thing for motorcycles, there are a lot of posers out there now because of this. It's one thing to be an enthusiast and appreciate the machines, its another to take on the life style "just because".
But that is only my opinion. Have they done a lot of good? Yes. Has stardom tarnished their gem? Yes. The ones that lose in this is the OCC and PJD brands with real bikers.

From what I understand Senior is not the most pleasant individual off the camera. I know numerous people that have had dealings with him and they all say the same thing about him. Things that I can't say here otherwise I'd be violating TOS.
On another note, thinking back about the new building he wants or wanted to build. The issues he had trying to get the tax incentives was reported back in march of this year. In last weeks episode of the show he was visiting his first shop on Stone Castle Rd to explore the possibilities of moving back in there. In terms of a timeline it had just snowed and he said it was a late season snowfall (it had collapsed the roof). I'm thinking that might be after he was denied the tax breaks for the new building. Either that or it was just TV drama to make you think he was going to move back to his old shop, just down the road from Jr's shop.
In terms of his bikes I couldn't agree with JTF429 more. American Choppers started airing at a time when there were numerous other bike builders being shown on TV. Builders that already had a following in the chopper circles and are a thousand times more talented than the American Chopper clan. Names such as Jessie James with West Coast Choppers (before his more recent problems) Billy Lane with Choppers Inc (again, before his more recent problems) in Miami and Indian Larry Desmedt (RIP) from Gasoline Alley in NYC. I think the problem with the builders and their brief portrayal on TV is there was no drama instilled into the show. It was all about their talent.
Then comes along with the American Choppers circus of stars who, in the beginning, didn't do a hell of slot more than assemble the bikes. Most of the fabrication other, than sissy bars and handle bars, came from third parties. Sure they threw in a few things like round bar but the bottom line is it was all cosmetic. They didn't do much more than bolt everything together, do a little wiring and fill up the tank with gasoline. I think the thing that made this show last and built up their popularity was the drama. It's not until more recently that they actually fabricate tanks, seats and fenders.
I'll admit it, I watch the show but take it for what it is. While they Senior and Junior have grown to be more of a builder than assembler, I don't think they will ever match the likes of the others.

    OKAY FOLKS HERE I GO!!!!
1 - We decided to temporarily close the topic for a few minutes as the FD vs. PD debate was getting outta hand. From this point forward if that debate is going to take place, this topic will be closed for good and if anyone complains about it, then I'll take action and start handing out detention slips (aka warnings). Or better yet, I'll show up at your front door and discuss it with you. Either way, the BS is gonna stop here (aka anti-cop / anti-fd / anti-any agency sentiment)
2 - Stay on topic, we saw what happened, like I said in my previous post this could have happened to anyone and I was also quoted on that.
3 - We can be adults here and discuss training and the events surrounding the incident. Just because some guys is wearing a different uniform than another does not matter.
4 - No slamming each other, self explanatory. If you need to PM each other with different points of view then fine, don't do it here.
5 - Strong points of view are okay to be discussed but civilly.
6 - Current posts will stay up, I'm not going to make any of them invisible. Anything that is out of line, will be removed.
This is final. I have one good arm right now but the other is fine enough if I got to knock heads here.

Just watched that video and all I have to say is What the ??????? obviously. Yes I understand that there is a time and place for certain types of tactics with tools, especially spreaders but quite honestly that spreader was misplaced and was not on the car's frame, nor should have that tactic been executed until all cribbing was in place and the car stabilized. NYPD's ESU member did a very wrong tactic, granted it could have happened to anyone of us. But there is a time and place for anything, this was not it.
Goes to show you rushing is not going to accomplish anything.

Some important things we all should keep up on:
    - Yearly (preferable) or Bi-annual physical assessments.
    - Keeping up on you inoculations and boosters (HEP-B, Tetanus, MMR, ect.)
    - Any possible exposure don't hesitate to report it and stay away from your fellow co-workers to keep them from being exposed.
    - Don't wait around, even if you don't feel like you are sick, go get checked out. An illness may incubate and break out much later compared to when you were exposed.
    - When it comes to you gear check it every time you walk into the firehouse / work. If you were exposed to a biological or chemical agent don't even think to bring it into any building!!!! Bag it up and get it professionally clean.
    - DON'T ACT LIKE A "TOUGH GUY"! If you do, more than likely you sealed you fate with whatever you contracted.

"K" goes back to the invention of Morse Code by Samuel Morse. When you type "K" ( -.- [dah-dit-dah]for American Morse code, .-.[dit-dah-dit] for International) at the end of a sentence in code, it is being used as a "prosign". "K" in code means "go" or "over" - another station is invited to reply, and literally "oK standing by" for intensive purposes. It is still used by code operators today when communicating with other stations. "K" is the short version of "GA" (Go Ahead) and technically when you are specifically communicating with another station waiting for their reply back, you are supposed to use "KN" but again "K" is shorter. When you end a transmission between two stations you would type "SK" (Silent Key).
Just like sfrd18 anf towerladder2 stated, its a carryover from the old telegraph box days. Someone would stand at the box and inside there is a telegraph key (pretty much all Gamewells have them). Since the boxes went back to a CO and not directly to the firehouses, the circuit could be closed off so that the CO operator and the officer / aide could communicate with each other over the FD lines. Imagine having to learn Mores code and the FD codes for alarms for your duties! Each department was different with the old signals and telegraphs.

The Sub Base FD is part of the New London County mutual aid system and is the primary Hazardous materials incident in the county (part of the C.E.R.R.I.T.). The department has 2 stations, headquarters is located on the "lower base" and Station 2 is located in the off base residential area located near Route 12.
The Department's call letter is "C" so on the radios the apparatus are C-11, C-21, C-15, C-100, C-200, ect. The first number is the station the unit is out of and the second tells the apparatus type (1-4 are pumpers, ETs, mini pumpers, service units; 5 is aerial device, 6 is EMS first responder, 7 is rescue or hazmat).
The Sub Base is also the FAST / RIT unit for part of the county.
