Well all the departments you listed including Ossining are a 12-15 minute drive to Valhalla's station. It's not about speed and who is closest for relocations, it's how to balance all of the resources in the county. A relocation is not an emergency per se. It is better to skip over several departments so that wide gaps in coverage aren't created in the process. Hawthorne, Valhalla, North White Plains, Elmsford, Thornwood, and Briarcliff had units committed to this job during rush hour. Leaving TFD, SHFD, PHFD, WHFD, AFD, untouched meant that whichever company relocated to VFD would have had a full complement of second due departments nearby available to respond to another major incident.
You're hung up on Ossining but the fact of the matter is that they've got a half dozen engines two trucks rescue and support equipment plus a lot of manpower. I'd like you to name a major job North of White Plains from the past 20 years that they haven't been on or relocated for. An 3 man engine or 1 man truck from Hartsdale on a relocate... That's just silly. If I was Greenville, Hartsdale, or Fairview I'd decline the request for a relocate knowing that if have to call back manpower to cover my first due.
The box was filled appropriately and just because a few Ossining members work for or have previously worked for 60 control does not indicate favoritism. If it's big and in northern Westchester you can be sure Ossining, Bedford Hills, and/or Yorktown are going to be part of the job.

Sort of like the old kitchen table quote. Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. They can go on TV and try to spin this any which way they please. The facts are indisputable. A gang member from Baltimore shot and killed his girlfriend ( most likely because she was going to out him on his plan ) and headed to NYC to " put wings on pigs today ". I can see the cover of the Times tomorrow. Ismaaiyl Brinsley was a good kid who was only weeks away from attending community college to get his life in order. He was active in his community ( selling crack to the community ) and a role model ( to the kids they hire to sell the crack ). His mother Ms Not his last name and father Mr not his last name ( because he a was being raised by his Aunt ) can't understand what went wrong in his life and can't believe those cops chased their son down the subway and shot him ( he would never kill himself ). Lets blame everyone in society for our problems and not look in the mirror and hold ourselves accountable. WHAT A TRAGEDY IN ALL ASPECTS OF THIS STORY. THANK YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA, MAYOR DEBLASIO, AL SHARPTON ( I refuse to use Rev in front of his name ) JESSE JACKSON AND ALL OF THE HATE SPEWING RACIST LEADERS IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!

To echo thebreeze above.....he IS different. He served this country in battle and deserves to be treated with special regard. Your response is cold, callus and devoid of reasonable consideration. This is a man who is as qualified as all and more so than most, it would appear. If the board has a reason, beyond cold-calculated political retribution, let them voice it.There will certainly be a legal battle here, which the village will lose. They'll suffer shame and a waste of tax payer dollars to boot.
My score on future promotional exams will certainly be eclipsed by those with Vet. credits and they'll be promoted before me. This is good and right, they are more deserving than I because they gave in a way I never have.

Coats were made of Cotton Duck with silver reflector stripes, Nomex was unheard of (still have that coat).

Long gone, about the middle of Stop and Shops' dairy aisle/ back room now. Pretty much every building you can see in these photos was torn down for the Waterfront complex. Went to school with Vinny and Kathy Yettito whose father owned Roto-Grip.
Pipe, great spot on Sid (RIP) Think I spot Zinger Gordiski and John Nielsen ....... Trying to pick out a few others, but the pictures pixelate on me, where the hell were you?
Ron, amazing photos keep them coming.

Please, if you know any firefighter or a firefighter with a family member struggling with this horrible disease please contact this group. They are supported across the full spectrum of the fire service and are completely non-partisan in their efforts.

You could write your Rep/Senator to fix the obamacare law to treat volunteer FF's fairly in light of what they contribute to the community.
    or
You could ask the elected officials in DC to cover Vols for nothing, using some money they get out of things like exempting themselves.
    or
You could write your Rep/Senator and to repeal ALL 2409 pages of the law they didn't read before they voted. If they don't, we'll find somebody else to vote for.
    BUT
Whatever you write will probably not be even read by your elected official. It will be semi-read by a 20-year-old intern and he will send you a form letter
Didn't our forefathers fight a Revolution because they had no representation?
  14. Stench60 liked a post in a topic by RANDY45 in Mayor Demeza Delhomme has prohibited village employees who are volunteer firefighters from
Are you kidding me, volunteer departments only survive because employers let the employees respond to fires/ems calls. Can you imagine the uproar in the community when those public employees no longer go on fire calls and instead the village has to PAY a fire department to respond, and the community has to pay for that. This is not about pay vs volunteer, but municipalities have to set an example and allow there employees to respond to calls if they expect other businesses to do the same. This is vital to the sustainability of the volunteer service.

Somer engine 188- a 10 wheeled tanker pumper, I believe to be replaced with a similar unit- so add on another 3/4 mill or so.
BUT- why is it that these units need to be considered for replacement after 15 years of light service? (Let me guess, Barry, the NFPA again?)
If a rig is 15 years old and has 30,000 miles and 1,500 hours on its diesel, and 150 hours on its pump, and lived in a warm dry bay, why is it that the unit needs to be retired?
I have heard that over-the-road trucks last 10 years at 100,000 miles/year- same diesel, same drive train?
I know little, can someone enlighten me?

I would like to clarify my post quoted. First thing is first. I apologize to the members of VMFD who were not mentioned specifically as I did not have that information available when I wrote my quote. Those members have since been named, and congratulations to them are in order. If it wasn't for the good search preformed by the E-38 crew (I believe that was the correct engine, if not a am sorry again) and the quick efforts of the members performing CPR quickly, and getting early advance care. This person would not be here. You all deserve a way to go for this job, victims of fire in these kind of cases survival rates are far and few between. Be proud. You all made a difference and that's what it is all about.

I too remember the good old days, but as we get older the laws change. Going to the Firehouse is sometimes like walking on eggs. You have to be careful what to say, where to say, and you your saying to. Know a days cell phones can record, take video, and pictures. I't at the point that you respond to a call and return home after. And if you attend a FD meeting and a subject comes up and you debate on it! Hold on to your hat's, all hell will break out. Which makes me laugh. The Department Heads always say if you have something to bring up, bring it up at a meeting. Well, if you bring something up in a meeting, you better be careful. The good old days are gone! Fire Service, and EMS is just that! A Job or a Volunteer. In and out,Say nothing and leave with your tail between yor legs.

  19. Stench60 liked a post in a topic by IzzyEng4 in Booster Reels Aren't Evil
A 3/4" or 1" booster line is still a viable hose line on a pumper. The problem is it is not used properly now a days. Back in the day yes it was utlizied as an initial attack line, a hold over from the days of using chemical tanks for small fires for a quick knockdown. As years progressed, booster lines had either a smooth bore, Navy (SG-60) or Coast guard (CG-15) attached to them, then later adjustibles and even FMC hiogh-pressure nozzles (if you had a three-stage pump on your rig). As fire loads became greater, the booster line isn't usefull as an main fire attack line because you can't get the proper GPM to defeat the BTUs genreated at strucutre / room-and-content fires.
    A booster line, though you don't get a lot of gpm out of it due to the size of the hose, it is still good for a lot of applications if used properly;
    1 - Nussiance fires
    2 - Brush fires
3 - Small trash can fires
4 - Chimney Fires (attach that good old under used chimney nozzle to it and send it down the pipe)
5 - Use as a secondary line for a car / truck / container fire by attaching a SG or CG nozzle using either a piercing attachment or a "pinapple wand" to get into those hard to reach areas (before a hood or an opening can be created). Again, doesn't take the place of the main attack lines, it an added resource.
6 - For drafting operations, the return recycle line to keep water moving back into a porta-tank so you don't waste a discharge and don't loose your prime
7 - DECON and REHAB for your firefighters, nothing like having a small line to cool you off on a hot day or to wash down your dirty gear. Again, freeing up another larger line or main discharge.
8 - small propane tank leakes - less than 20 lbs tanks (adjust the nozzle to a good fog patter and disipate that LPG)
9 - Use as an invesitgation line - The FM is trying to find the cause of a fire, got a few very small hot-spots or needs to wash down a small are without having the great pressure from a 1 3/4" line, the booster is your line. GRANTED it should not be the only line present, you should still have a main attack line present just in case! You have the poewer of both.
Those are just a few as there are many more uses still.
I rather pull a booster line for a nussince fire rather than having to pull 50 feet of pre-connect in a crossy lay or front bumper line for a little fire at 3 am.
Also too, a lot of fire comapnies are utilizing the "hose reel" concept with 1 3/4" lines as well. The Mortlake Fire Comapny in Brooklyn, CT has a pumper with two pre-charged attack lines on reels. Granted this is a differnet concept and can be disccused in a different thread, hose reels are still viable.
    Mortlake FC's website: http://mortlakefire.com/mainsite/index.htm
Booster lines are still viable, its just departments get it in their head that it is old technology and no room for it any more. I say hogwash! You may not be able to use it as a main attack line for larger fires, but in the end, its a quick line thaty should be utilized if you have it. Just like the debate of fog nozzels vs. smooth bores, the booster line has it place in the fire service.

Unfortunately with the bias on this board, remove firefighter from the first sentence and replace with police officer, and everyone will go nuts with how it is unsafe, they are untrained, unprepared, unprotected. I for one am getting real sick of it.

I feel, in this instance, these officers did a great job. Making a traffic stop is far more dangerous then this to a police officer. But should they stop making traffic stops? No. There may be other opinions, but that is mine and I stand by it. I can think of many other counterpoints to the opposing arguments, but there is no point, my opinion is not going to change.
So smoke and CO detectors are useless? They were elderly, and this is not something unheard of. There should be more of a focus on promoting these alarms, so we're not having these types of situations progress.
