**JUST A QUICK NOTE** I like for us to keep in mind the bother firefighters who were the first responders to this heart braking incident...... , anything that involes kids is a little harder to deal with.
Just three weeks ago they also lost a young child to a working house fire.
    God Bless Newburgh firefighters

I was the one who posted the Incident Alert about this last night. I had been listening to the scanner on and off, but was only getting bits and pieces. I knew there was a water rescue of some sort, that was about it. Later on i heard that it was for a vehicle in the water.
As i drove to work this morning, i heard the horrific news on the radio. I was stunned and literally sick to my stomach.
I cant say much more that hasn't already been said. JBE hit the nail on the head as many others have.
All i can say is that my heart goes out to those poor children and to the sole survivor. He is 10 years old, old enough to know what he saw and went through. As JBE stated, there will be a special place in hell for the "mother."
Also, im glad to see that soo many of you have included the emergency service members who were involved in this incident. This is one of those calls that you could never prepare for and will never be forgotten. My thoughts go out to those Fire, Police and EMS members who were involved.

Whats wrong with having an agenda? Without an agenda, nothing would ever get done. Progression would never occur, in fact without an agenda, slavery would still be around.
Just because he shines light on a topic that in my opinion needs to be looked at severely by each department doesn't mean he is a bad guy or has terrible ideas. They are just ideas that you do not agree with. Instead of throwing hands up in the air, cry the "beating the dead horse" routine, or "he just has it out for volleys," why not look and understand where he is coming from.
We are the fire department. We are here to protect lives and property. Driving our 500K-1M dollar rigs around to communities near and far to show them off, doesn't really do our tax payers any good when their house burns down when we're not around.
edit: it is ok, and actually takes a bigger person to look at someone else's views and realize "hey, maybe we need to look at it that way." You'll probably get more respect for listening to an idea, and then constructively debating it, then to just call someone ignorant.

My department holds them in December and the term starts January 1st. I absolutely HATE elections because they are nothing but a popularity contest and the best people for the job usually walk away losers because the membership doesn't care about the important things only who they like more. I wish departments would do away with elections and have strict promotional rules and regulations based on expirence and training rather then who is liked more.
    End of rant!

    Tour of Duty: Not available
    Badge Number: 157
    Cause of Death: Traffic Stop
Date of Incident: Sunday, February 24, 1985
    Weapon Used: Not available
Suspect Info: Alex Mengel who was shot and killed trying to escape from police custody while being transported back from Canada where he fled after killing PO Stymiloski and a civilian in an unrelated incident.

Police Officer Gary Stymiloski died from injuries sustained when he was shot during a traffic stop alongside the Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers NY. A lifetime resident of Yonkers, Officer Stymiloski was a graduate of Gorton High School. After a brief period in the private sector, Gary embarked upon a career in law enforcement. His first position was as a Police Officer with the Sloatsburg, New York Police Department. On September 27, 1982, Gary became one of the first Police Officers with the newly formed Westchester County Department of Public Safety Service. Gary's talents as an officer were recognized early. He was assigned to the narcotics squad of the Detective Unit and worked undercover assignments. His work was exemplified by winning the title of Police Officer of the Year 1984 by the Westchester County Police Pulaski Association. When Gary's assignment to the Detective Division concluded, he was assigned to the Patrol Division.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

The other day, the snowy commute proved horrendous. At the rollover between Peekskill Hollow and Bryant Pond Roads, so many Good Samaritans intervened and helped a hurt, scared lady who skidded off the road in her minivan and came to a stop on the vehicle's side against a tree.
Thank you to the off-duty EMT I saw running into the woods toward her vehicle. Thanks to the guy trained as a first-responder who also was a life-long Boy Scout who just wanted to help if he could. Thanks especially to the several off-duty NYSTroopers who stopped, provided invaluable scene safety (with loaned flares- ahem) and helped to speed up the BLS response. And thanks, George the medic, for getting there to relieve me and allow me to get to work in the local ER (looking and feeling much like a wet, half-drowned rat).
Evereytime I start to think that people in general just suck and don't care about anyone but themselves, Good Samaritans like the ones I met the other day prove me wrong and restore my faith in mankind.
Thanks, all of you, for that.

Public relations 101; do it right and keep your department out there in a positive light, especially these days with all the crazy attacks on the job from coast to coast.
Lest I forget our Brothers In Blue, I leave you with this.....and yes they DO take transfers.

Our BLS 1st Responders are trained and equipped with Epi pens to help patients in anaphylaxis and albuterol to treat asthma. Anyone suffering from anaphylaxis or asthma generally has little or no control over these medical conditions.
While this may sound a little cold, but at what point do we stop taking responsability for the stupidity of others? You play russian roulet with heroin and you may take a bullet. Why is it our responsibility to protect you from yourself?
I have no problem with ALS units providing this service, but we have limited resources and its getting to the point that if we add something new, we need to take something away.

I stopped wearing a streamlight years ago after getting hung up on it several times and the more I thought about it and observed others the more I realized I was wearing a flashlight that pointed to the ground while crawling. Now its just a vulcan for me and most of the guys I work with. They are light weight sit nice and the blue LED's on the back stand out very nicely for visual with your partner.
As far as helmet lights go...no way, no how for me. I want nothing extra on my helmet to become an entanglement magnet and teaching over the years I've seen them cause more problems then they prevent and funny enough..most people I run into with them don't turn them on when it comes time to work as they are focused someplace else. Its bad enough with some of the face shield connectors used on some helmets now protruding from the sides of the helmets, the eagle front piece holder all causing entanglement problems.
Couple that with the amount of crap they are putting on the back of our SCBA's sticking out, the DRD's that will catch nails like snookie catches cold sores and then we add to the mix with a flashlight on our coats, helmet and all kinds of other crazy crap. I'm wide enough naturally..I don't need extra help.
