It looks like Comm. Kielb was vindicated. I guess the new guy coming in also told the Mayor and Dep Mayor that he could not operate safely with only one Batt. Chief. The second Batt. will be open again 24/7. Safety first

This was the brainchild of a former chief and current DPW commissioner. Strictly a penny pinching move.
Junk from the first day it arrived.

At least YFD appoints someone with a firefighting background and knowledge of the Fire Service not like other Municipalities. I still like NRFD's policy, have a Chief/Commissioner and due away the two individual positions.

Good luck to the new Commissioner. I hope he comes in and sees how completely understaffed we are. I hope he does his due diligence before he takes the job and will be allowed to get the proper resources he will need. Comm. Kielb stepped down rather then put firefighter and civilian safety second to politics. Good luck in the position.

I'm Glad it looks like Yonkers is going to get a very qualified commissioner. However with a job as deep and professional as Yonkers didn't they have a deep stable of talent internally to pick from?

Great knockdown wp! Leaving the engine along side the hydrant and having two ladders sandwich it works great especially in narrow streets. Closer stretch and both sides of house covered. 71 and 74 are usually great with coordinating with which way they are responding. Great jop wp once again!

ladder would have been no good. power lines.(look at Picture # 1 #2 and # 4) like tglass said fire went out nobody got hurt and the house is still standing. WPFD did a great job making a great stop and preventing the fire from getting to the attic with little man power and one truck comp OOS. Also was a delay in calling FD,

Do you REALLY need an Aerial in front of that house? Come on that is a ground ladder job all the way, and they are certainly accesable if the rig made the turn or even stayed there if they had to. While I would agree it is good practice to leave the front open for a truck company give it a rest

Looks like a pretty good job by WPFD
I think, however, the the video kind of illustrates a common complaint among White Plains firefighters. They're always shorthanded.

As the husband of a teacher, if people truly want to save on taxes, then go after neither the Board of Education nor the fire or police service: go after politicians.

If that was such a good concept there would be more than a few hundred communities out of the 33,000 fire depts and however many police depts in the us.
Most places one service becomes the bastard step child and there is no one to bring the fight to the elected officials. With a police and fire commissioner, at least they get to argue the depts case.

Yonkers City Admin. has proposed cutting 2 engine companies and a battalion chief to save money. Part of the cut would be the ellimination of all FD response to EMS calls. There is rumor that the city has a proposal to replace the 11 engines (each with 4 EMT''s) with 4 one person flycars (Not clear if BLS or ALS) for $1,000,000/yr.
Well done YFD and FF Rodrigues.
I think the city's new position id: "How dare you save a life, when we are trying to strip services to the people"

I have een retired from Yonkers for about 2 1/2 years after a 30+ year career. I don't know who writes these things but as over my entire career this story is filled with wrong information. This is typical for the politicians and press in Yonkers, if the facts don't work for you just make it up as you go. The sick leave statement has been wrong in the past and I'm sure it's wrong again here. The line about 10 minutes early for a weeks pay is wrong, to begin with it's 12 minutes, and it's for one crew to pass on information to the next crew, and it's not a weeks pay. Why should that lead to more sick leave, it does'nt make sense? The manning clause is 57 not 54 and is a safety issue. Also talks about preventing "abusers" from working mutual shifts, makes it sound like 25% of the job are abusers, which is total BS, not to mention mutuals are contractual, but they have been trying to rip up the NEGOTIATED contract for years. The City negotiated the contracts and now they want just throw them out, very typical from politicians.

And just alittle advice there young man. If you're smart, you won't put all your eggs in one basket. Yonkers is a Great Dept and if I was a young guy, I know how you feel. It certainly would be something that I would work for.
But, in the meantime, continue to take every test you can for wherever. I ended up taking six test and I didn't get the dept I wanted (Bridgeport, Ct). But I got on the job somewhere else. Did my thing. Had a Great time and retired after some 30 years.
I hope that you are lucky enough to get Yonkers. Just keep in the back of your mind, there's other depts out there that you should also be applying for.

I was browsing thru my red alert and calculated 20 structure fires since 3/23. Five were 2nd alarms and one was a 3rd. Five of the days had multiple jobs going on. It wouldn't surprise me if we still get cut. They just dont care!

I was speaking with someone about that very topic yesterday. It's truly pathetic that the budget games continue and the PD and FD are only pawns.

Increased workloads mean nothing to the pencil pushers. Personal goals / pet projects usually trump the public's safety. It's a real shame.

I am curious as to what happens to the local courts and the fines. Does the county take over the courts, and does the town lose the revenue from fines ?
