At first glance, reading the article it might seen that the Mayor has a point.
.... if true, the Union must have a great contract. Then reading the comments, it seems that the city is getting mutual aid as well as giving it. Another half-baked idea, half-correct story?

they hire people as janitors or maitenance men, and those guys join as volunteers...the fire department lets the janitors leave "work" to go to fire calls...Hmmmmmmmm......how convenient.
It circumvents civil service, the IAFF, and a quality pension, among other things.

I think Sr, his show, his bikes are all a joke. He is way beyond shady. He got rich off a t.v. show that had him and his dsyfunctional family making idiots out of themselves. He is not a stand up guy in any way shape or form. I know a big 9/11 ride is leaving there that the IAFF is organizing. So much for Union Brotherhood. They should have looked into that one. Just my opinion. I would trust a bike built y that idiot.

I saw only one post in an unrelated thread about the Verizon strike and the delay in scheduling a repair appointment. Are there any emergency service related impacts that this strike will have?
I heard from a couple of Verizon guys during their lunch break from the picket lines that the company is bringing in 20,000 non-union workers from other states to fill in for the striking workers. According to these guys, Verizon netted about 6 BILLION in PROFIT last year and their CEO's made over a quarter BILLION dollars in salaries and bonuses just last year but they're trying to send almost 10,000 jobs overseas to save money.
Sounds like union busting to me and they won't even negotiate with the unions.

Link to letter drafted by Attorney retained by both YFD Union and Residents:
    http://yonkerstribune.typepad.com/files/warren-reiss-letter-re-ridge-hill-08152011-copy.pdf
Also additional information below (as outlined in the Yonkers Tribune):
Yonkers Firefighters Union (I.A.F.F. Local 628) has retained the services of legal counsel to represent them and a group of negatively impacted Yonkers residents in seeking to compel the City of Yonkers, Mayor Amicone, City Council President Chuck Lesnick, and Forest City Ratner to live up to the promises and assurances made during the approval of the Ridge Hill Village project.
The City Council was the “Lead Agency” in the State Environmental Quality Review Act (“SEQRA”) for the Ridge Hill Village project and as part of their approvals for the project, the City Council adopted two (2) “Findings” Resolutions mandating, among other things, the establishment of one (1) additional Truck Company for the City of Yonkers (with 35% of the annual costs being attributable to the Ridge Hill Village project and the building of one (1) additional Fire House (with $3,000,000 of the construction costs to be paid for by Forest City Ratner).
“To date, despite the opening of several entertainment and retail stores, and with more stores scheduled to open before September, absolutely nothing has been done to build the new Fire House or staff the Fire Company promised to the citizens of Yonkers” said Barry B. McGoey, president of the Yonkers Firefighter’s Union. “We have raised this issue on numerous occasions for at least the past three (3) years to the Mayor, the City Council President and the entire City Council. We were met with excuses and empty promises with Mayor Amicone blaming the Yonkers City Council for not appropriating money for the purchase of a suitable site for the fire house and the City Council blaming the Mayor for not identifying a parcel of land and negotiating a purchase price. It’s way past time for both the Mayor and the City Council to stop playing the blame game and to do their job.”
In a blistering letter to all of the above parties, the attorney for the Yonkers Firefighters states that all parties involved “have completely and utterly failed to follow through on the necessary measures to ensure that Ridge Hill would not and will not adversely impact the City’s ability to provide adequate fire protection services.” The letter calls upon the City Council to enact legislation requiring: the City to immediately locate and acquire the necessary land for the Fire House; directing the City to commence design and construction of the Fire House as soon as feasible, and requiring Forest City Ratner to immediately fund a $3,000,000 escrow account to cover its share of the costs of that new Fire House. Alternatively, the City Council should revoke or rescind the approvals and zoning changes it made for the project.
Local 628 President McGoey said “I have instructed our attorney to take all steps necessary to ensure that the mitigation measures promised in the SEQRA review and the resulting findings (the construction of a new Fire House and establishment of an additional Truck Company) are implemented and that the City and the developer deliver on the promises and assurances they made when they sought approval of this massive project. We have been joined by numerous residents of the surrounding area who were quite vocal in opposition to the project when it was proposed because of the negative impact it would have on them, including the drain on fire and emergency services. It was because of their legitimate fears that both the City and the developer agreed to provide the area with additional fire protection services. Indeed, the developer agreed to put up $3,000,000 towards the construction of a new Fire House in order to secure a (second) favorable vote from the City Council as Lead Agency.”
McGoey continued, “We are hopeful that Forest City Ratner will join us in requesting that the City live up to the promised additional fire protection, not just for Ridge Hill Village, but also for the neighboring communities. Forest City Ratner has promised $3,000,000 towards the construction of a new Fire House, but it is the City’s obligation to design, plan, and build the Fire House. We expect Forest City Ratner to live up to every promise they made to the citizens of Yonkers, including the one that they would mitigate the negative impacts the project would have on fire protection services for the rest of Yonkers. As good neighbors and responsible developers we expect Forest City Ratner to join us and request that the City of Yonkers implement the mitigation measures outlined in the SEQRA Finding and construct a new Fire House and establish a new Truck Company.”
McGoey concluded, “We are going to hold the City of Yonkers and Forest City Ratner to their promises. To do otherwise would endanger the safety and lives of the citizens of Yonkers and the residents of Ridge Hill, as well as the safety and lives of the Yonkers Firefighters.”
  13. tglass59 liked a post in a topic by 61MACKBR1 in Yonkers fire union claims public safety threatened without new Ridge Hill firehouse
The developers did indeed agree to build a New Fire House in order that the city could add an additional "Fire Company" to assist in providing Fire Department Support and Fire Supression at the Ridge Hill Site (Many people don't realize that it is not only fire supression that is involved, but First Responder Support as well).
Ridge Hill does pose response tmie issues, based upon the current locations of the neareset firs stations (Station 10, Station 11, Station 12 and Station 14). There was talk that the city was looking at the King Fence property to use as the site to build a new firehouse (Speculation was that a New Fire Station 10 would be built, to house the current Engine 310 as well as to house a New Ladder Company (Ladder 77?) to support Ridge HIll
Amazingly, with the Ridge Hill Complex almost set for completion, the developer has not yet come to the table with the City Executives (Ammicone, etc, etc) to get the New Fire House built and the new fire company in place, to conincide with the completion of Ridge Hill.
Why doe certain promises and committments alwasys get delayed and pushed aside? (All it is going to take is someone to have a Heart Attack at one of the Ridge Hill Stores, and because of the current extended response time delays, YFD is unable to get there in time to help. Then, at that time, the "You know what" whill hit the fan.

I am a person with a college diploma and am currently pursuing a fire career and I can honestly say that my college degree is only worth the paper that its printed on. Too many people stress college for everything now-a-days and dont realize that it may not be for everyone.
I got a degree because i felt that it was what was expected of me and honestly, I didn't learn much at all. All of my skills in the business world were taught to me at my current job and were learned on the fly. Very rarely, if ever, do I come across an obsticle in my job and revert back to my schooling.
With that said, I do feel that certain fields, such as Medical, Teaching, and Engineering are very technical and do rely heavily on schooling, but others, such as Business, Trades(electrical, construction, plumbing, ect) and Emergency Services are all about the kind of person you are by nature and on the job trainning and experiance.
Also, Common Sense, a vital skill that many people are lacking, cannot be taught at any college or trade school.
This is only one person's opinion, I apologize if I offended anyone.

I agree with both of you guys. If you arent doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worrie about. Also, something like a simple wave tells these guys that you see them and are a friendly, same as waving at a cop car on the road, usually I get a wave back and left alone.

With the new current staffing levels at WPFD, I don't think there is enough firefighters left on shift to fight two trash can fires burning simultaniously in different locations!
So how did the city with "its large tax base" end up in this sorry situation: 1) Fat Cat developers (Cappelli and others)were given property tax breaks for numerous years. These are the same structures that put a strain on public safety services with additional hazards for public safety personnel to deal with. 2) The revenue used to fund city services is based on sales tax which fluxiates with the economy instead of a stable property tax. If the city had raised property tax as the cost of living increased, they would not be in this situation.
You don't need to be an economist to see that the city politicians recklessly mismanaged where the revenue to operate the city came from, and now Public Safety workers are made jobless and their lives are put at further risk because of their actions. Shame on the Mayor, Common Council and the residents of the city for their short sightness. In my 20+ years of fire service to the city, I would have never thought the city would lay off firefighters. Most know that the WPFD already operates on minimum staffing already, and their salaries are on the low side of the scale already. I only hope that WPFD firefighters and police aren't hurt or worse by the actions of mindless politicians.
My thoughts are with my WPFD brothers - Be vigilant- I don't think the city is finished trying to take things from you....
  20. tglass59 liked a post in a topic by JFLYNN in White Plains lays off 12 cops, 9 firefighters
I agree with you and I will elaborate further. First, to recap the YFD policy regarding mutual aid which has been stated on here previously...when called for mutual aid we will respond directly to the fire or emergency scene if requested to do so and stay until no longer needed. If requested to stand by in a firehouse we will do so but we will notify the department, if they are not already aware, that if they do not begin recalling off duty personnel within 30 minutes of our arrival, we will leave. This is the general policy but it is ultimately at the discretion of the Fire Commissioner and may be modified as necessary for specific incidents by either the Commissioner or Chief of Ops.
I would strongly suggest that in these times we find ourselves in, other departments should consider a similar policy. If Commissioners or Chiefs of Department do not institute such a policy on their own, they should be "encouraged" to do so by their members.

OK Now I will post for the second time in four years.
Recently I was called in from home and paid overtime to stand-by in a White Plains firehouse while they battled a blaze on Lake St. There were other Mutual Aide companies in the city as well, I believe two, all on stand-by all at the expense of their taxpayers NOT the City of White Plains taxpayers.
Now that the City of White Plains has shown that it is unwilling to pay for a minimum level of protection will the surrounding departments continue to subsidize the City of White Plains at their own taxpayers’ expense but sending in Mutual Aide to stand-by? How do you justify this?
Now let’s be very clear I am not, nor would I ever say if a Department needs help you don’t go. If White Plains or anyone else has a fire or other emergency and needs help at the scene they should get all they need from their neighbors. But to expect that other communities should pay for the manpower and apparatus to stand-by in your fire stations when you are not willing to pay for your own employees is ludicrous! Especially for a city like White Plains that enjoys such a broad and lucrative tax base. How come no one is asking where the tax dollars are being spent?

paint jobs do not improve visibility. If all the lights and reflective striping don't do it, no color is going to make a difference. The additional cost of painting the car is compounded by the additional cost of repairing these cars.
When they are slashing budgets and laying people off, every wasted dollar matters.
