Would it be fair to characterize this man's complaint as being analogous to a career FF (or LEO) who wishes to remain an active employee, but doesn't want to be part of the underlying Union because he doesn't agree with it's fundraising/spending?

That's what I thought. We trained with them for a while until their funding was cut.

    Dino,
That's an excellently written post. Makes a ton of sense. I'm going to disagree with you on one item. The endorsement of an individual's position in recent news article regarding the Stamford Fire Rescue situation.
I've read enough of that thread to think (I'll not claim to KNOW anything for sure about the SFRD sit.) that there are obstructionists who will not move out of the way and let SFR do what should be done, now. Cover their entire city, get all of these associated agencies in line with what needs to be done. In others words get in line or get out of the way.
Those actions to preserve an organization at the possible expense of lives and property within that district appear to me to be self serving over serving the citizens.
Other than that, you've raised a great point with your opinion, and I respect it.

Two battalions covering entire city both averaging up to 3,000 runs each if my memory serves me. Batt 1 covers the north and south city line from west side of city all the way to the saw mill river pkwy and then some. Batt 2 covers the other half where all the parkways and 87 is located. They are constantly on these roadways for mva's.

Barry, thank you for the response sir, knew i'd get some answers.
Now, i know little to nothing about Yonkers FD and its operations. However, cutting 2 Engine companies AND a Battalion Chief sounds assanine to me.
Im under the impression that YFD currently runs with 2 Battalion Chiefs per shift (please correct me if i am wrong). Now, to go to just 1 Batt Chief? YFD is obviously a very busy department and one that is well regarded. With the ammount of work they catch, making ANY cuts would be a big blow to not only the FD, but the residents of Yonkers.
I know that Yonkers is covered by Empress EMS, which is one of the best local commercial EMS agencies. But to cut FD response to EMS run's won't help anyone (besides the politicians). Im sure there are times when Empress is tied up, but YFD can be there within minutes to initiate care and possibly save lives. Aside from that, i am sure that Empress appreciates the extra hands.
Now, as far as the rumored fly-car program; doesnt sound like a smart move to me. How is that more cost effective when youre ADDING equipment (maintenance, fuel, replacement). Plus to go from having 4 sets of qualified hands to help, you'll just have one. How much work can one EMT (or Medic) do by themselves?
Any cuts in the YFD would be an injustice to the residents that they protect. Their training, experience and knowledge shouldn't have a price tag placed on them.
Find other ways to cut costs, but dont mess with Public Safety.
Hey, im just a young volunteer firefighter, but just my 2 cents.
    x4093k....
Thanks for pointing that out. After i posted, i had a feeling that i mis-spelled his name, but of course got busy with other things.
I hate when i mis-spell anything, let alone a mans name who deserves better than that.
I will go back and edit my post to correct that, thanks.

I was browsing thru my red alert and calculated 20 structure fires since 3/23. Five were 2nd alarms and one was a 3rd. Five of the days had multiple jobs going on. It wouldn't surprise me if we still get cut. They just dont care!

I was speaking with someone about that very topic yesterday. It's truly pathetic that the budget games continue and the PD and FD are only pawns.

It's reassuring to know that there are detectors sensitive enough to activate in response to such minute quantities of radioactive material present.

There really isnt any management in the dept that are not essential for running day to day operations. A commisioner, chief of personnel, chief of special ops, training, and fire prevention. We had one officer in charged of training in the past. For a 450 plus department. You think he had a workload? 99 percent of our staff are in front line positions. You cannot run any department efficiently without any support staff. If we doubled our staff positions tomorrow, it still is would not be enough. By the way, the school busing costs approx 40 million dollars a year and causes lots of unnecessary traffic along with increasing our response times.

Most of you seem to be missing the fact the not enough qualified personal were at the scene forcing the ic to use non fire dept personal to do fire dept functions. This lack of qualified personal is a huge problem in the fire service today. Non fire dept personal should not be used period, put enough players on the field or dont call yourself a "team".

The only thing that this thread is going to accomplish is a percentage increase of ffs getting speeding tickets from troopers. The discussion should be focused on the lack of manpower on the fire dept.

Hi - I work for Penflex, one of the major LOSAP vendors here in NYS. Please tell me what department you were with and I will either get you the information or have someone get in touch with you. You can contact me via email at ahill@penflexinc.com if that is easier.
  24. helicopper liked a post in a topic by rayrider in False alarms douse firefighter morale; Nyack says nearly half of calls are not real
With the police alarms, its usually a home owner forgetting to type in the alarm code in the time alloted or forgetting their alarm is even activated therefore setting it off. Much different than faulty equipment or burnt popcorn.
