I guess Greenville is more popular then I thought.
As far as the Larchmont fire goes, we weren't called until almost 2 hours into to operation so we were must have been pretty far down the list. On the flip side, Larchmont is also on our mutual aid list so it is MUTUAL, we just haven't had to call them yet. At least 3 of the guys who responded on that call are from the Sound Shore so they knew the area very well. Also, most departments provide a guide-usually a callback FF-to ride with the mutual aid rig.
When we send a rig on mutual aid-be it to the scene or to relocate-we almost always send 1 Capt. and 3 FF''s. We will also initiate a call back of 1 & 3, starting with the guys who live closest. Rarely will we send more then that unless both rigs are requested. We have on occasion sent additional manpower once we were back to full manning in quarters.
As far as interoperability goes: we carry the neccessary adaptors for the neighboring departments that we work with as well as having a bag with our adaptors in our apparatus bay for incoming units should they not have them. We also have a laptop and mutual aid guide book on each rig as well that lists what channels to use and hopefully soon will have hydrants and other building information stored on them for all of the departments we work with.

I can not speak for Westchester, but I can say with absolute certainty, that in Dutchess, some departments get themselves invited to fires BY a Coordinator.
I respect and love most of them, but if you disagree with me, you are kidding yourselves.

    Wow, news spreads fast!
    A little history:
When the Pope (and I don't know which one) gave the order that Catholics must go meatless on Fridays, it was because the Spanish fishing industry was having finacial difficulties. To bolster the Spanish fishing industry, he made the fasting on Friday order. (sounds a lot like the GM bailout, doesn't it?). In return, the Pope was given a castle in Spain.
As for me, I like seafood, but I question the motives of Popes and Politicians.

    Good to hear it.

Call 451-4000 and ask for the Chief's Office. He can answert your questions.
If I had to GUESS, I would say that they are already severly understaffed, and utilize what little manpower they have in cars and on foot, where they are able to participate in the daily foot pursuits without having to "park" a Segway?

Definitely true, between my OEM job and the HAZMAT Team I keep a "go kit" in my car and another by the front door of my apartment in case I am going to get sent in for a few days. Extra BDUs, an old pair of boots as a backup, SOCKS, a few MREs, toiletries, a towel,

Why does it matter aside from maybe helping figure out what is wrong with the patient? Forget about how its just wrong to treat someone differently based upon a medical condition, what if they don't know they're carrying some disease. Everyone gets treated the same unless I suspect an infection requiring droplet precautions.

    Any second on the motion?

We had an elderly gentleman who visited us daily at Headquarters for many years. He could hardly walk with his cane, but managed every day to make it up the hill to the firehouse. He wouldn't accept any help getting around.
I learned a lot about the job from senior men. I learned even more about life from daily chats with Al. He made me feel more comfortable in my own firehouse than some of my co-workers.
He's passed on now, and I hadn't thought about him for a while until this story brought back very fond memories.
The unsung about things that all people in emergency services do for others. Obviously, the Brothers in Lansing go above and beyond the call, each and every day. Humanity and decency; traits of our Brothers and Sisters everywhere across this country.
God Bless them all. Thanks for a very heartwarming story.

This is one of the sorriest excuses for a document I have ever seen. All it does is "recommend." Yes, NY is a home rule state, but it does Require 229 hours of training for career firefighters under their document Administrative Standards for Firefighters. Where's the "home rule" in that? I believe the State could require a lot but just chooses not to. Even the 229 hours is minimal. Responsible fire departments are giving their probies somewhere in the range of 400 hours before they hit the street. Along with that, the required 100 hrs per annum cannot scratch the surface of the things they should be training on annually.
Where was home rule when the state mandated PASS devices and personal escape systems? The state jumped right over home rule when enough people demanded these items, and the state can do it in regards to training. All you have to do is get together and make a stink to enough stste legislators.
The argument for "home rule" and "recommendations instead of requirements" over the years has usually been something along the lines of "If we force too much training on firefighters, we will lose volunteers." Well, how would you rather lose them, because you require too much training, or would you rather carry them out in stokes baskets and put their name on that ever growing stone monument in Albany. (By the way, that monument sits in front of the place where they only "recommended" training. Ironic, isn't it?) This is not a salvo aimed at volunteers, either. The vols that see the need for training will stay.
I spent almost 35 years on the fire department and I cannot remember a time when I didn't want more skills and knowledge. Even in retirement, I am still learning. The Authority Having Jurisdiction should be within yourself. You should be begging your department for more training and knowledge.
How would you feel if you were personally responsible for losing a guy because you chose not to train on whatever killed your fellow firefighter? You have to live with that for the rest of your life?
Never let a man say that his training let him down.

I suggest we all write our congressman and either ban purple lights or tax them heavily. If it's dumb, our legislators will surely put it into law.
OOPS...I take that back...I'm getting old.
Congress might take it the wrong way and ban funerals altogether.

I think this line of the article speaks for itself. That thought process from the public and politicians is often a recurring issue when debating what is an acceptable level of service.
