This is an interesting thread. IMO it really does a lot to demonstrate the mindset held by many members of the Fire Service in this region which is such a disservice to those we are sworn to protect and to our own fellow Firefighters....with the exception of helicoppers question regarding manpower (and he is a cop, not a Firefighter), and one other question and answer in regard to White Plains manpower, the whole thread so far is all about how many apparatus respond, with no mention of personnel.
Guys, Firefighters put out fires...Firefighters who are adequately trained and certified for interior firefighting and physically capable. A certain amount and type of apparatus, of course, is necessary, however, listing how many apparatus respond to structure fires is not only worthless in terms of assessing a department's capabilities, it is misleading.

Alot of speculation going on ,on your part don't you think??? FYI, Chief Kielb had been a DC of personnel prior to Commissioner Pagano's appointment and has been a candidate for the commissioners position in the past.I have worked under both of these men and I believe either one would fit the position well.I am sorry to see Chief Fitz. go . He has done great things for the advancement of my department. He also had over 32 years on and maybe felt it time to move on.Your ASSumption as to why is ,well, none of your business .

I was actually going to write a defense of your post; I thought for sure you were being sarcastic. It's quite obvious you were not, you are dead serious. I think your post summarizes the mindset of what has taken hold in many of the locals in the fire service; hoorah for me and mine, screw everybody else. Did you ever think; what if the roles were reversed and it was your job on the cutting block? Wouldn't you hope that another job would consider taking on an experienced firefighter, with all the required NYS training and certification in the world? The Brothers who might be losing their jobs in New Rochelle did nothing wrong to be losing those positions. I would hope if I were in that position, some chief somewhere would still understand that Brotherhood extends beyond the ridiculous boundaries which still separate the smaller jobs in south Westchester.
As far as padding your pension goes, how much extra would you expect to be making without all of your slots filled on your job? Whatever happened to this thing we call "The Brotherhood"? Where everybody sacrifices just a little for the greater good? I'm glad I'm retired now, if your mindset is prevalent on the job.
And you of all people who always rail against "lowering standards". What exactly do you think you are advocating for in this post? To me, you have stated just about the lowest standard a "Brother" could stoop too.
"Men of fire" Fir Na tine....not "Boys of Greed."

I've seen home owners insurance discussed as well as not wanting anyone to risk their lives to save what you can rebuilt. That's a little short sighted, don't you think? What about when you wake up in the middle of the night and your exit is blocked by fire and smoke? No one is risking their life to save some furniture and a flat panel TV. We're here to save lives and to do that, you need to get in there and search and extinguish the fire. You might live in a single story ranch, but what about the guy who lives in the attic apartment who's windows are 30' off the ground? How about the person who is overcome by CO in their sleep and could still be rescued and resuscitated?
We're a tool box. Hopefully we're a bottomless one, and can mitigate whatever issue it is tasked with. If managed correctly (career or volunteer) we can be the best insurance policy money can buy. However, to do that we must respond quickly and with adequate staffing.

Yes most have 1 full timer (who also work for the district) your list was 4 or 5 part timers and later you mentioned how little they each did. Also they often get paid much less than a firefighter and get a 401k not a pension,
Every career FD I know has to do this, at least till they get promoted (one reason to study).
Vary's from dept to dept. but, many of the items listed are done by career members. I know our guys have completely renovated kitchens, tiled, built BBQ's, painted, electrical work etc. And the few items listed can be contracted for (cheaper than hiring).
    Brilliant
I pay about 45% less for home insurance, I cant compare fire vs. liability to yours, but I suspect the liability & theft should be abouth the same, and I do know that the difference in ISO ratings (2 vs 9) happens to be approximatly 56%.
Everyone in NYS who's fire insurance company is not in NYS also pays the 2%
Good question, its very hard to answer if that would do it or not. However, in the country the best rated dept. without hydrants and 100% volunteer (but with very solid manning)is an ISO 4 which would be a 40% savings.
Its clear that a department with a 9 (on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being no fire dept.) can do better. Will career personnel solve the problem? I don't know, because there are many other factors, but it is clear that change is needed.
60 Control's call volume is over 95,000 and SFD's is a little over 2% of 60's. If SFD's volume is too high/complex then how can they manage New Rochelle's which is 4.5 times more or Eastchester's which is about 2 times more. I guess the other depts don't have protocols, many of which were established and adjusted over the years.
I am not surprised by this attitude, 20 years ago the SFD Board stated that they did not want free paramedic service (paid for by IBM & Pepsi) and they stated that the reason was: "the residence of Somers don't want paramedics when they are having a heart attack, they want people they know to hold their hands as they are transported". Most of us at that hearing never expected that.
  10. fjp326 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Somers Looking To Hire Career Firefighters?
Thats about what I pay, but "fire and EMS" is at $435 and its a fully paid system. Plus I save on my ISO rating.
Then you are statistically way over due. I suspect a large number of SFD's calls are for other than structure fires. I hope no one you know ever has any other issues that a prompt response would be important.
And you've worked as a medic for how long?
Thats good, because it sounds like your expectations meet the current conditions.
Can you tell me: "What is the cost of fire protection"?

I believe this is the wrong approach; it throws the good out with the bad.
This is a first responder forum, not a knitting circle; we're all type A personalities, we can handle a little conflict and rough exchanges - here or in the firehouse/precinct/whatever.
If the behaviour of certain posters crosses the line, first warn, then delete the posts and ban the posters - long enough to cool off, or permanently if merited. That's the way I would handle it.
This isn't criticism; I don't spent the time & effort Seth & the moderators do in running things around here. Just my opinion.

The original Lost Trails was closed in August of 2010. Information came right from their website when we were planning a second trip there. What I did not know is that they reopened at a different location in June of this year. Maybe a fall trip is in order.

Well unfortunately in today's society, it is easier to blame the police/government for some frivolous nonsense in order to make a quick buck at the taxpayers expense. Let them go to whatever hole they crawled out of and try the same thing over there. I can almost guarantee that the outcome for them would be totally different.
Hopefully the county sticks to its guns and doesn't bow down to these animals.
  15. fjp326 liked a post in a topic by efdcapt115 in Playland-Muslims Riot over "Hijab" wearing
Well this is truly amazing. According to lohud, over 60 police units had to respond from as far south as Tuckahoe to deal with this unreasonable and unruly crowd. Why? Because their "muslim sensibilities" were insulted? Give me a freakin' break. The rules are posted and for certain rides, there is to be NO WEARING OF ANY TYPE OF HEADGEAR period.
Why do these people think they are exempt from the rules, the laws? I know what they would like; Sharia Law. Their own version of a justice system implemented in the countries they emigrate to. I think that is a disgusting disgrace, as were the actions of these supposedly "religious" people at the Playland park.
Look, you people want to assimilate in this country, fine. I guess we have to let some of you in. But if you don't like the system, the rules in place... TOO F'IN BAD, go back to the place you came from.
The difference between these people and the ancestors of many of us here in this forum is our great-grandparents had a huge desire to assimilate into the American culture. That's why on my mother's side, they came from Italy, moved into the south Bronx and gave up teaching their native language to their children, my mother, and therefore I don't know Italian today as a result. I wish that part were different, but the point being these people were so anxious to "fit in" they even gave up their language. Italian was forbidden to be spoken in the house by my great-grandparents, as a result their great-grandchildren only speak English.
Now these muslims with their headgear, the hijab, they can't even get on the Dragon Coaster without starting a ruckus? Like Playland OWES them something, like WE owe them anything? They should kiss the ground of freedom they walk upon, shut their damn mouths, follow the rules, or else.
What a waste of PD resources to have to direct half the cars on patrol up to Playland because these freaking people were "insulted"! Enough! Fit in or GET OUT!

The professional teamwork by YPD ESU, YFD RES1, SQ11, TL75, B2, Empress EMS and NYSP freed seriously injured victim whose arm was caught between steering wheel and tree. Vehicle was hanging around tree and had to be stabilized before any extrication could be performed. Members were concerned that any removal or re-alignment of vehicle would cause it to fall back down embankment.
  18. fjp326 liked a post in a topic by JJB531 in Why Are Police Officers Down Here So Different?
FDNY rescue companies were originally formed to rescue firemen, not civilians, in the time when NYC was burning down. No need to get all worked up, both agencies play their part in the "rescue world". I'd rather be able to work alongside a talented group of rescue specialists from any agency (PD/FD/EMS). We should start striving to learn from eachother rather then be at eachothers throats over childish nonsense.

The first set of decals is on, the second set will be white lettering and metallics. The Bare Metal Foil application was tricky, I haven't done it in such a long time. Besides finishing the decals, I need to add mirrors, an access ladder, scene lighting and other fixtures, and miscellaneous details. I also need to paint and install the various doo-dads and gadgets I made for the compartments. I probably won't make the February 28 deadline, but I'm in no rush. ;D

If you are on your 5th Bottle something is major wrong. After that much bottled air (read at one incident) you run the risk of lung issues And staying in Rehab for 10 minutes is not going to resolve a BP issue. And this is the safest choice?
We dont pay for our firefighters to stand around at 99.9% of our fires. Maybe you need to take a better look at the people you are calling firefighters.
If your levels are that off, 10 minutes will not help. YEs it may catch something, but the members also need to know their bodies and at what point they need rehab. It is not always that "automatic".
THats not what you have been saying prior to this.

Lots of hazards at skating rinks to be aware of. Anhydrous Ammonia, lubricating oils, high voltage electricity to name a few. If you have a rink in your district, it would be wise to check it out on field inspection. Have the crews show you the refrigeration room and the location of possible hazards. At the very minimum it makes for an interesting training session.
