  1. So you just kind of show up and hope they have a bed available for your pt?

Do they provide different treatment for patients based on their initials or DOB? That really serves no purpose if they don't look them up in advance and how often do they do that?

Sometimes you do show up and hope they have a bed available. I bet if we put more patients into the waiting room like walk-ins they would eventually stop calling for non-emergencies.

  2. Excellent topic for discussion, and very good point that should be addressed and given more attention than what it actually gets during the EMT-B Class. Surprised it is only

briefly discussed and touched on. Yet this is probably the most critical part of the job of an EMT. It becomes part of the patients medical record, as well is considered a legal

document. Especially if your ever subpoenaed to court. Any EMT instructor's reading this, might want to give this document a little more time than what the average instructor

    affords it.

I think you'll find that almost every EMT instructor agrees with you. They will also agree there are probably 30-40 other topics worthy of additional instruction. So the question is are you willing to take an EMT course that is 600 hours long instead of 200?

No? You're not? That's too long for an EMT course? Well then, I guess we better cut back to the bare minimums so we appease everyone.

EMT Instructors don't have a lot of flexibility. It's not like college professors who can tailor the course to suit their interests or their audience. It's a national curriculum, administered by the state, and course sponsors can't afford to add much to it without incurring additional expenses and pissing off the students.

  3. A lot of skills are only touched on in training courses because there isn't enough time to do them justice. You have to learn them on the job or in other training. Westchester used to offer CME type programs for stuff like this but they weren't well attended.

Documentation is critical but we don't teach enough about it.

  4. Hey,

I am currently an EMT-B for a year now and I want to take a step forward and become an AEMT-I. There seems to be no courses going on. Does anyone know why?

Also, directed to an instructor possibly:

How long is the AEMT-I courses vs. EMT-B and AEMT-CC?

Thanks for the help. I just wanted to increase my capacity in the EMS field through volunteering. I just don't want to be a paramedic.

If you're in the metro NYC area, there is probably no option for "increasing your capacity" as an EMT-Intermediate. I don't think any agencies in the area use them anymore so there's no training for them anymore.

Be a really good EMT. That's the best way to increase your capacity!

  5. This story is starting to get a lot of twists and turns. First reports say the waiter or bartender told them not to go out on the water. Then the Owner says they ate $300.00 in food and 4 Drinks. Then they even skipped out on paying bill.

O.K For them to skip out on the bill and make a quick getaway out of the Piermont Marina is not happening. And why do that when The Bride to be lives not far from the restaurant. I believe the restuarant is covering there butt so there not liable for any wrong doing with Boating while intoxicated or continuing to serve if there to intoxicated.

Now back to the accident . In one of the storys( News) the best man and bride to be were sitting in front (Bow). Is it possible they were standing a blocking the view of the boat operator ( No excuse if he was drunk ) plus if the groom to be was on the barage where was the boat operator found, where were the 2 other surviors sitting. When they got pulled out of the Hudson they had life perservers on. Did they put them on themselves or did the boat operator make them put it on. Everyone hates wearing a life perserver ( me included ), but did all in the boat have them on and some took it off while underway. A lot of questions still have to be answered not only for the investigation, or first responders, but for the recreational boater.

Drunk or sober, isn't bow riding illegal anyway? If they were blocking the view of the operator, it's stlil not the barge's fault. The barge didn't make him operate drunk (so accused), or at an unsafe speed (inference), at night with improper equipment (no radar, spot lights). So let's put the responsibility squarely where it belongs - on the operator. How many other boats are transiting the Hudson without crashing into the barges?

What does the recreational boater or even the first responder have to do with the issue of life preservers? It's a criminal investigation and the legal authorities will have to filter the truth from the BS.

    Tragic completely preventable accident. Period.

  6. After all the rash of police impersonators in Westchester, how does a civilian balance the fear of being pulled over by a police impersonator while also complying with an attempted traffic stop by a PO?

If in doubt, don't stop. Just keep driving in a safe manner at a safe speed and call 911. If the car is real police there will be more of them pretty quick and you can stop when the conga line gets behind you. If it's not then the conga line will stop the moron trying to stop you.

Was it really a "rash" of impersonators?

  7. IMO I think this sign is directed towards people that like to find their car by activating the alarm which I have done before but not at Empire City. I know horses can get spooked by those types of sounds since the lot is close to the track so to me it kind of makes sense. The sign doesn't say you can't arm the alarm.

That's the way I read it too. I don't think they're telling you not to arm your alarm or let it stop a car thief. I think they're saying if you're too stupid to remember where you parked you should have to walk around until you find it rather than hitting the panic button and following the noise and flashing lights. Empire City seems to be trying to be a good neighbor. There have been tons of problems with parking, traffic, etc. so I wouldn't be surprised if that's it.

  8. Congrats to Yonkers on a progress and forward thinking unit. Looks well thought out. Who is the primary for this vehicle, PD, FD, OEM, Westchester DES or UASI? I see all five logos on the side.

There's no DES logo on the side. Only Yonkers agencies and since Yonkers is a UASI partner I would guess that Yonkers is the lead for this one.

  9. That's an hour of my life I'll never get back. I just finished watching the video of that village board meeting and am stunned by how poorly presented that information was and how many times she said "me, me, me, me" or "I, I, I, I, I, I".

If it wouldn't make me want to gouge out my own eyeballs I would watch it again and count her references to herself as saviour of IVAC but nobody should have to see that twice.

My sympathies to IVAC - and to the Village Board - you are in a bad spot!

  10. Very rarely do I see them driving with a partner so by looking into your vehicle to see what your other hand is doing, they themselves are distracted from their driving. Somehow I can see this causing more mva's involving a mos and it being the fault of the mos for not paying attention to their driving.

It's really not difficult at all to spot an unmarked car these days. Buying all new $40,000 vehicles or however much they are at taxpayer expense just so they can sit a couple inches higher is a complete waste of money and one of the dumbest things I've heard of since being apart of this site.

I guess you never let your hands slip from the 10 and 2 positions on the steering wheel and never look over at the car next to you to see if that head of blond hair is a babe or a boar. Oops did you just change the radio station or reach for a coffee cup? That must have caused a horrible crash!

Your condemnation of the police in this effort is off base and undeserved. The cops can drive and look into the car next to them without crashing. I don't think you're going to see any more accidents involving cops because of this.

As for the vehicles, state bid vehicles are way less than 40K. The fact that they're different from regular marked Tahoes was the pitch to the media to get them interested. Really not that big a deal.

People don't pay attention to anything so they're not going to see these Tahoes or marked vehicles or a line of flares or that red light. Drivers suck!

  13. One thing I haven't seen mentioned at all in this thread is talk to the agency investigating the accident BEFORE you cut/disconnect the cables. There is so much electronic data stored in the vehicle these days and it might be lost if power is removed from the system. Some stores permanently but some may be ?volatile? and lost from something like cutting/removing the battery cable.

I know how much disdain there is for anything police in the fire service but this may be crucial to their investigation.

  14. I was recently reading the HVREMSCO website (www.hvremsco.org) when I saw the notice that BEMS was requiring all BLSFR agencies to update their info or lose their agency code. While I didn't think that it had been that long since I was on their website, it is apparent that this came out in October.

In any case, we are not responding to the update request and are just letting ours go.

I was just curious as to how many departments in the area had once been a first responding agency that have given it up within, say, the past 10 years. Has this had an adverse impact on the residents of your district? Has anyone even asked?

If all that's being requested is an information update why give it up? Was there some cost or something to the department?
