I think there are far more unprofessional things on the radio. Like, third tones for a crew... An EMT is needed....
XXXX on scene, working fire, retone for all available personnel...

Historically, doors haven't been breached during these kinds of incidents so securing the door so it simply can't be "pulled open" may in fact save lives.
Not a really big deal. Teachers have them in their rooms and if a lockdown is called or they hear shots they can secure the room from inside.
Hardly them trying to do emergency response.

Simply saying "evacuate" isn't an answer!
Suppose there are additional suspects are outside or there are other hazards created specifically to injure first responders or evacuees.
What if it's an elementary school with 30 kids in the class and 1 teacher? You can't simply turn the kids loose without a plan for them to be accounted for and supervised.

    1) When the shooter is running down the hallway and the cops are trying to find him, he will not have the time to breech a class to slip into. Besides, they are looking for easy victims.
    2) This response makes no sense.
If a kid has a laceration...don't stop the bleeding, leave it to EMS?
If the building is on fire...don't evacuate, wait for the FD to do it?
If the building has an active shooter, law enforcement has already instructed the schools to lock down and if the door does not have a lock, this is the next best thing.

Honestly I don't see the problem with this, it's not like they are trying to mitigate the situation or take down the gunman. Sure doors can be breached, but most gunman aren't carrying around forcible entry tools with them just multiple weapons and ammo. These sickos are trying to inflict maximum damage in minimal time because they know sooner than later there will be armed response, something like this that slows them down could make them move on to try and find another target or buy precious time while law enforcement is en route in order to save lives. It's not like these people think they have found a solution to school shootings. Plenty of times in these instances you hear about teachers and students barricading themselves inside classrooms, this is just another method to accomplish just that. Why bash it if it could save lives? If your child was stuck in that room would you prefer if the teacher was just trying to hold the door shut from the inside or if they actually had a device like this to better accomplish the same task?
On top of all this, when is the national news media going to stop plastering these killers faces all over the place granting them their fifteen minutes of fame? It only further emboldens others to commit similar acts. Knowing they will achieve some infamy and exposure as they escape their own perceived notions of insignificance is a lot of what drives these lunatics. The media is more concerned with selling papers than they are with common sense and the safety of the public.

While generally that's correct, there's a number of aspects of tort law that you'd be missing out on here, especially since there is a trove of studies, documentation, and anecdotal evidence that blue lights help with visibility. You be hard pressed to make a state of claim based solely on the fact that the blue lights violate the VTL. By that logic, blue lights must be inherently dangerous when used in such a fashion, making every volunteer's POV a "ticking time bomb on the public roadway", even when the lights are used lawfully.
To take that argument a step further, how many fire departments have amber lights, even if only rearward facing? Read the VTL closely, those amber lights on emergency vehicles are illegal in New York. So, if an engine/rescue/truck gets rear ended while having amber flashing lights, is that a home run for a civil claim. Of course not. But if your worried about it and your in a command position, how can you allow your department to continue to display those amber lights and "flout the law." I say that sarcastically, because I live in the real world.

Where's the program to make sure heart attack or stroke victims (or any other taxpayer suffering from illness or injury) get an ambulance in Westchester in a timely fashion?
Heroin overdoses resulting in respiratory depression account for what percentage of calls? 1/10 of 1/10 of 1%?
What percentage of calls have a delayed response because a VAC can't get a crew out or a commercial company has all its units running? 30-40%?
This is a bandaid on someone in multi-systems trauma. The EMS system is broken but we won't address that.

30 years ago we were carrying Albumin. I do not think it was ever even used. Just cost money & would expire in the rig.

Just to be clear this article is talking about blood plasma, it does not have a major role in transporting oxygen to tissues. This is a product with plasma proteins and coagulation factors only. It does not contain red cells, white cells or platelets.

As far as getting rid of cops? They do, NYC is down 6,000 cops since 2002, so, yes, they do get rid of cops.
I will let my original statement stand on its own and not even address your reasoning as to why, how and who decides reductions.
If you really believe that cutbacks are decided by one company beating another to a call, then I cannot argue your logic.

His personal pride and pride in his company have nothing to do with the amount of companies, then or now. That has more to do with politics than anything else. It is not something an individual company officer has any say or influence in.
A work ethic like that is rarely seen anymore, but it is sorely needed.
Calling them "morons" is uncalled for.

I can't believe it took this long to get posted here and nobody replied yet. Disgraceful. An oil pan on a fire engine gets pages or replies but this is ignored. People gotta get their priorities straight.

Agreed to everything 16fire5 says. One line that particularly bothered me was "Leaders lead from the front, and cowards lead from behind their men". Your job as an officer isn't to be upfront doing the work, its to make sure your firefighters do their work safely and properly. Would Eisenhower have been a more effective leader if he was the first to step foot on Normandy? I get pretty annoyed with this whole "coward" idea as well. Personally, until I'm shown otherwise, anyone who's in this field is not a coward. This whole macho way of thinking doesn't help anybody. "Oh its getting pretty hot in here, I'm running out of air and this fire isn't going out. Better not get out of here or I'd be a coward". Here's a crazy idea, instead of everyone going " to the front" how about just do YOUR job. If you're the engine company boss, do your job and supervise your crew on the line, don't "lead from the front" and take the nozzle from a kid who could use the experience. I'd much rather my IC was "leading from behind" and actually had a scope of the incident so he could look out for everyone's safety.
