  1. Well first of all the hole is too small second its not high enough on the building third he might be useing the new fangled nomex civilian fire protection suit that we have all been waiting for....or mabey you just cant fix stupid. Chief Flynn you are right again if it was my house and it wasent getting done ...you might have to take things into your own hands, but at least have gloves
  2. great post-- Interesting comments-- I hate to follow ALS he has such a way with words!! "back in the day" you learned the job from the older men in the department, there was very little formal training. You worried about your own communnity-- we acted "localy not globley" Depatments were much more "centered" in the community. The Fire Chief was elected by a popular vote not by experience or he was elected because it was "his turn". Today we elect beacuse of training- education-dediciation- (hopfully) We act in a more globle fasion. We have training centrer where we can learn and practice our skill. Our equipment is much more superior. Although we still maybe community centered the fire service is much more intertwinted with the computer age. Facts, figures , trends , new equipment all play a part in todays fire service, as well as the hands on training. So simply put we have moved with the age--foward thank goodness better?? I hope so
  3. SYD On behalf of BurnCare please accecpt my congratulations for runnig a first class seminar. I truly hope that the 400 or so attendees of the seminar were able to take home somthing to their departments. Being there is only the first step ,making sure that the lessons learned from the sparkers are passed to the other firefighters is just as important. Syd, the staff at Elmsford F.D. work hard on this all year, as a reciepent and benafactor of the seminar I can promise you and your fellow firefighters in Elmsford ,that proceeds from your seminar are being used in professional manner and being used to fund programs that are benifical to firefighters. Thanks again Walter Ferguson Director BurnCare
  4. Elmsford fire Seminar is scheduled for this Saturday Feb 07,2009 at the Tarrytown Marriott. Great educational seminar with dynamic speakers and proceeds go to important charaties. Firemans Home, Squad 18 Foundation and BurnCare
  5. Thanks Seth and the EMTBRAVO crew. What a cast of fire personel that is assembled there. I dont see JohnnVV, he has moved and is working in the south, but we do see his posts still on here , saw Chiefhac at the probie graduation on Friday and continue to get his Emails every day. FFDPG has retired and taken a job in safty with New York Trains and buses. That leaves demps121 and Alsfirefighter--there isnt a week that goes by that we dont chat about somthing concerning the fire service. I am glad to call all of them my friends and fellow Fire Instructors. All the fire instructors work to help make your job safer, to bring down the line of duty deaths, to bring you the latest updates so that you can be ahead of the fire curve--thats where good firefighters and Officers are supposed to be. I am just glad to be among them. Seth ---the goose story continues on with every Fire Officers class that I do. Team work, brother hood and sacriface, we can learn a lot form the birds--just dont stept inthe remains
  6. There is lots of room there--- they can spread that plane over 92 acres--cause they arent building there any time soon.
  7. Here my .02 --- Again we are held to a higher standard then the general public. end of sentence. Bad business practices?? I guess so!! Is he or will he be in charge of budgets in the department?? Then his business practices do come into question. You have to remember some one is watching some place/ some where. We deal with public funds and public opinion, they all figure into our fire service lives, just do the right thing you cant go wrong with that advice.
  8. Today the President stated- is the day we pull our boot straps up--stand up and be counted and heard and put The United States of America back on the right track to lead the world. We are in this together whether your vote was for McCain or Obama aren't you glad you're in a country that can do that!!! He took an oath to uphold the Constitution of The United States to the best of his ability---lets believe him and stand with him to make this a better world for our children and their children.
  9. Are we finally putting this to rest?? The air pack in question has shoulder straps and waist straps--the directions in the box say to ware the equipment properly and in normal conditions all straps must be fastened. Personal prefrence aside thats what you should do. If you take any State Fire courses--thats the way you will be taught. A photo is only a snapshot of a split second in time-- we should be looking at all photos to learn from if we can do that we are ahead of the game. lets not forget we (the fire sirvice) are the ones that had to have the liners sewn into our coats because we kept taking them out. We also had to have the PASS integrated into the air pack because we (collectively) didn't turn them on. We also had to have a law passed in New York telling us not to have a live victim in a live fire because some one died. Just more food for though for you guys to feast on. so go head and feast
  10. Another case of being in the right place at the right time--maybe theses guys should meet and exchange stories.
  11. Always nice to be in the right place at the right time. Good work
  12. Heres my reply to everything in this thread---Congratulations to all involved. EVERYONE RELIED ON THEIR TRAINING FROM THE PIOLET- TO THE CREW-TO THE RESCUES PERSONNEL Thank god they were trained and their training didnt let them down in an emergency---thats coolness under pressurer
  13. I have know Steve for many years-he is a highly respected police officer in this county and what they are doing to him in Pleasentville is a discrace. I can only hope that the citizens of that community come and support him and let the village officials know what a waste of tax dollars are being spent---get this police officer back to work let him protect and serve.
  14. Nothing better then a nice drive to Montour Falls.
  15. The stations are picked out by the OFPC and are told to us at the testing time but usually there is a donning station, a rope station, one on ladders, nothing out of the ordinary and nothing that firefighter cannot handle- all basic stuff.
  16. There have been several attempts to have a National Cert test given here in Westchester but never enough candidates were available. If you are interested, have your Chiefs speak up to the State OFPC or the Westchester DES . There is a cost factor $25.00 for the test. We are doing national testing for the probationary firefighters class next week.
  17. Chief Flynn makes good points--having dealt with NYS Tropers on a major highway for years, please and thank you go a long way so does Command presence. Act like a commanding officer-- Introduce your self to them --with your rank or position respect the police officers rank--they are called Trooper. We all have jobs to do out there. If we all act in a professional manner and understand each others position things will get accomplished in a orderly and safe fashion. If you have a problem--have a meeting with the agency in that area, sit and talk, work things out. Explain your side--what you do. how you do it. what apparatus you need . what ambulance you use. what towing service. what manpower you need. how they are getting there. Understanding each others job might make it easier in an emergency situation. If its a major accident the police agency will be taking command from you for any investigation that might ensue, offer your help, the use of lights any manpower they might need, use of the fire station for their command post. coffee donuts just my thoughts
  18. You are right on target--be careful what you say and be aware of who you are saying it to. I am sure the Chief is a advocate of sprinklers and smoke detectors, but as all human beings are capable of doing at times, the brain and the tongue werent working in sync.
  19. chief thanks for clearing up the manpower situation--it makes a difference--from the first pictures it does look like it could be handled ,but the shortage of manpower makes things difficult. Every one went home safe to their loved ones and THAT is the most important thing
  20. back to basic air consumption drills in the station--make a small mask confidence--practice the escape maneuvers. PPE checks, theres a few that might keep you busy for a while.
  21. and most of them stink
  22. Chief Byrnes Welcome home and glad your safe and sound. Thank you for your service to the Country, you have been missed by your fellow fire instructors.
  23. How can you tell the difference?? and if you cant please treat them as live!!!
  24. Greg great job--being in the right place at the right time--- your training went into motion---you emotions were in check-I am absolutely positive--at that moment you were not thinking about being a laid off firefighter--you were a firefighter with a mission to complete--your life was on the line. congratulations on a most heroic act of courage and bravery. For the record Greg-- an positive human being-- a firefighter that any Officer would love to have under their command. Best to you Greg and I truly hope things work out for you and the brothers of YFD.
  25. Please get this information to your chiefs and asst chiefs fast---I will be adding it to all my classes just to get the message out. Thanks for the information
