Every county owned park, road, golf course, building, jail, etc. loses money. Funny that the biggest money making rides at playland were sold to private vendors. Maybe if we actually owned the profit making rides it would not be losing money.
Yes, but not because of playland. NY is one of only 3 states that requires counties to pay medicid and thats along with some other mandates make up 80% of the county tax. We are also overtaxed because only a few other counties in America have as much duplication of local government as Westchester. How many police chiefs, fire chiefs, school superentendants, village managers and there cars and all the other apparatus and "stuff" we are paying for that sits there for years because we do not need it?

I'd bet you would be wrong jflynn I try to take a balance of all that's around me experienced guys the science of fire you name it I try and throw it in the pot. I am not gonna stand on a pedestal and say my way of fighting fire should be gospel. I don't fight the same fire you do or they do. But I have to say it's clear one thing I have the respect to realize everyone is different and would rather know the Merritt is there tactics or the reason it doesn't work here there or whatever. Instead of you guys taking a minute to look at there tactics might work for them you would rather get everyone killed because your to arrogant to see your way is not the only way.

    Fun Fact of the day;
Back in 93, during my very short tenure at the Westchester Modular Homes plant, we had a project come through called the "Teasdale Project", which were modular homes for the City of Yonkers. They were a pain because every wall had to be double 5/8 sheetrock. We hated them, but that was the whatthey spec'ed for code.
Years later, I was doing EMS calls in those same buildings...not a straight wall to be found thanks in part to me.
So, technically, we CAN fight the same fires as there are MANY WMH dwellings in Dover.
What does that have to do with this thread? Nothing really.

Hmmm it looks to me like a blitz attack until more resources get on scene. So where is that a bad thing that's what departments in the US have to and have done for ever to slow down progression until you get enough on scene to effectively fight the fire. We only see five minutes in this incident think how long it takes some areas to get equipment on scene in the states not everywhere has a full compliment of trucks engines and manpower five minutes away. From my perspective they did a great job knocking down visible fire and if your paying attention it looks like they also knocked it down enough where it's really not producing smoke now go in and mop up with proper manpower and equipment.

This is why I can't take this site some times God forbid someone used different tactics. There are a million different things to consider and from a video you can't see, hear or already know what's there before it catches fire. Why cut them down you don't know you can't know what's going on from a six minute video. You may see all these fire fighters but I didn't see all the packs everyone here Idk the first to say we need 4 trucks and 7 engines before we fight a trash can fire and don't forget the fast team and a rit backup. For this small snapshot in time the attack they used seemed to work. But what do I know progression is never a good thing.

You are 100% correct if your goal is to prove to the public the difference between Interior or Exterior or the public is questioning manpower issues.
But if a manpower issue is not in question or some type of point to prove is not a concern, who cares what the public sees. Short of dressing guys in hot pink gear I dont think the general public would notice anything different unless it was specifically pointed out to them.

Wow what a great comment you can insert county, department what ever you want. In my opinion that's the main reason for the under funding and under staffing duplication of service departments need to down size and combine services not expand the services they already can't support.

That's a whole different issue because some people don't belong driving period. And some people such as yourself that want to be interior can because the driving is done by someone usually a firefighter that no longer should or can be interior.
    And it's a girl.

I think any pumper and/or ladder truck sent on M/A should have the prereqisite amount of trained interior firefighters on board; once they have met that, if they send along exteriors to assist outside performing tasks, such as changing air bottles, assisting the MPO, hydrant operations, rolling hose, etc, there should be no issue whatsoever. I think most incident commanders would welcome the extra help outside on the fire ground.

I was not trying to bash and my comments might be slightly dated, but I was basing them on: http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php/topic/44719-south-salem-working-fire-132011-discussion/
I've seen hundreds of depts that have or want to have a ladder company, but they still have work to do on the basics engine company operations.
There are hundreds of unmanned / undermanned apparatus in Westchester (in volunteer, combo and career depts) and a massive lack of basic capabilities. And at the same time we spend a lot of money for service, that in some places is very good and other places very poor.
I am sorry if that offends some people.

A few yrs ago we responded to a report of structure fire on the boarder of our district we arrived on scene heavy smoke coming from a 1 story commercial building. The paid dept. which we boarder was on scene also and was stretching lines the building was the first building over our boarder. The IC said its ours our chief said ok do you need any assistance they said no we got it. we stayed a few min the fire started to go through the roof the IC called a 2nd alarm then a 3rd alarm. My point is the IC had 25 guys ready to go to work and assist why turn down help that is already there? If I was the store owner I would be really mad that help was turned away because we are not paid and I lost my whole building.

And yet if you know how to you can use all of those guys. Not saying it's right for a rig to show up without scba guys buy also don't knock the help for things like ladders some vent work, and hose humping along with other things think about it this way let the guys on air do what they need to do and have the guys who are not do what needs to be done outside. It's better use of manpower.

I'd imagine it probably depends on the type of m/a call. Exteriors could be used for brush fire m/a calls (in my department, exteriors are used for brush fires), support work on scene depending on the requirements needed by the department calling for m/a. If your doing tanker operations, why send an interior out of your district to assist the mpo if he's going to be tied to the tanker?
No two mutual aid calls are the same; I think it depends on what the needs are at the time the mutual aid call is given as determined by the incident commander.

How hard would it be for the 2 Depts involved to have an understanding that if the Volunteer Dept is called into the Career area on M/A they must have the same amount or more interior F/F's as staffed on the same career rig that is requested. Career has a staffing of 4 on an Engine...the volunteer company coming in M/A must have 4 or more as well. Career Ladder has 3....volunteer M/A ladder must have at least 3.

On September Fifteenth in a class put on with paraco gas and the Dutchess County Department of emergence response we conducted live fire and leak evolution's to train on what we have learned in two nights of classroom training. A Few Duchess county departments were represented at the class including J.H. Ketcham (Dover), Beekmen, Hydepark, Roosevelt, Stanford, New Hamburg, Pleasant Valley, I apologize for any department I forgot. I will come back with some better descriptions and explanations throughout the week when i have more time but I wanted to get some of the photos up for others to see. I Don't know if every one can tell but if you look at where the liquid propane was blowing out the relief valve it was creating a ice tub moving the leak and flame upward away from the tank look at the straight whit stream of fog coming from the tank you can see the ice forming. Another shot of the ice buildup. A fresh out of Fire Fighter one kid getting a chance to give a shot. A fairly new but up and coming Fire Fighter EMT getting right up on the tank. Who said ice dosn't burn. Here is a chunk of frozen liquid propane on fire that got blown off the tank. I will eventually try and post some more pictures and video as soon as I can.

35ppm is very conservative to be on air. cosidering that the short term exposure level (STEL) is 200. If you do not let them reoccupy till its below 9 how do you deal with any industrial facility that the law allows them to have workers at 50ppm (current OSHA limit) 8 hours per day?
