  2. Any word on which engines these will be replacing? Also are there any plans to replace. I seem to remeber seeing in the Journal News a while back that FDMV recieved a grant to buy a new rescue.
  3. Allingtown is fairly busy. I'm not sure exactly how many runs they do. There are 5 career FF's per shift to man the TL, engine & rescue. The volunteer house is only about a 5-10 minute walk from campus depending on where your dorm is. The volunteer engine responds on all calls except EMS & MVA's. Allingtown FD does a great job especially considering the financial issues. Due to money issues, they don't issues gear to UNH students, however, if you bring your gear from your home department, they will cover any damage that happens to it.
  4. The city of West Haven has three seperate fire districts: Allingtown, West Shore and West Haven Center. All three are combination departments. UNH is in Allingtown's district. They run a Tower Ladder, Engine & Rescue out of H/Q and an engine out of a second house. The second house is manned by the volunteer members, H/Q is run by the paid FF's. I think West Haven center runs a bunking program but I don't know any of the details. I am currently a member of Allingtown. They don't have a bunking program, bu they do allow volunteer FF's to spend the night & ride out of the paid house. I don't really know too much about what the other two departments run and how they are staffed
  5. I think you get 6 credits for taking EMT-B at the Univeristy of New Haven but I don't know if they will take NYS cetification or if you have to pass the national certification too.
  6. Eastchester, Fairview, Greenvile, Hartsdale, Scardale al do. I think Pelham & Pelham Manor do as well but I'm not 100% sure.
  7. It probably either Pelham, Pelham Manor or maybe Larchmont. Those are the three closest departments that would likely have a fire horn.
  8. Yeah it's still like that but they seem to be trying pretty hard to change that. I know what you mean. But I was comfortable enough to walk to the New Haven train station by myself granted it was daylight. Also the campus police & West Haven PD do a good job of keeping the area safe. Thankfully I am in the newest dorm on campus. It is the only one with A/C and has a Dunkin Donuts & Quiznos in it. I would definitly recomend that anyone who is interested take a trip up for the day or come to an open house. The only problem with the open house is that it is not always a true representation of what the school is truely like.
  9. I'm curently a sophomore at the University of New Haven. It has an excellent Fire Science program. They offer majors in Arson Investigation, Fire Dept. Admin. & Fire Protection (sprinker systems, alarm systems etc.). I am majoring in Arson Investigation right now, but at the end of the semester I plan on adding Fire Admin. (Its only 6 extra courses which can be taken as elective courses. UNH is only about an hour or so from Westchester. If you want any more info let me know.

  15. I think the actual title is "Battalion Cooridinators". Their role is basically to assist the I/C with requesting and directing incoming Mutual Aid apparatus. Each battalion consists of anywhere from about 5 to 10 neighboring departments.
  16. http://www.hudsonvalleyruins.org/yasinsac/...ineyardave.html I came across this website about the old Yonkers FD Station 2 on Vineyard Ave. It has some pictures and info on the current status of the building.
  17. My understanding is that in the event of a WMD incident the 6 squads would be called to handle the incident itself with the MDU trailers deconing the public as they leave the "hot zone". As far as preparedness goes there has been alot of training thanks to governemnt funding between the 10 departments that make up the six squads (New Rochelle, Mt. Vernon, Yonkers, White Plains, Fairview, Greenville, Hartsdale, Scarsdale & Eastchester)
  18. I think for the most part Engine companies in Westchester act as "Rescue Engines" as it is. Most engines carry EMS equipment, extrication tools as well as some other recue equipment. Due to the wide variety of calls, an engine company has to be able to do alot more than just put water on a fire. As stated before, you can call it whatever you want, but unless you have proper training on the equipment, it is useless. I think there are only about 3-4 true rescue companies in Westchester (Yonkers, Mt. Vernon, White Plains) in the sense that these companies are always manned and the members of these companies are specially trained and are constantly training to handle various types of rescue situations. As far as traing goes, I think that all firefighters should be trained to handle whatever may come their way not just for whatever apparatus they may ride on. For example, the 10 departments that are part of the Westchester Special Operations Task Force have been training extensively in HAZ-MAT and Technical Rescue among other things.
  19. Hartsdale still has some

  22. Jackpot on South Columbus Ave. in Mount Vernon. They have 20 different types of wing sauces. Their hottest is "Blazing Hot" Also, Candlelight in Greenville and So Dam Hot in Valhalla
  23. I recieved a letter from White Plains today saying that I passed the test but because I don't live there it's not likely that I (or any non-residents) would be called for the agility test. Too bad they don't just give extra points to residents like Stamford or many other places. I think that it's pretty stupid that they would call the 156th person before they would call the top person on the non-resident list. On the bright side though, if you took both FDMV and White Plains and got the letter saying you passed WP, then you most likely passed FDMV.
