Volvo introduces new pedestrian airbags

Yahoo Today In Tech 3-9-2012

Last decade, over 47,700 pedestrians were killed and more than 688,000 were injured — more than enough to represent a genuine public safety concern. But could any of these fatalities or serious injuries have been prevented by designing safer cars? That's precisely what automaker Volvo is betting with its new V40, the first car ever to include pedestrian airbags.

Weren't they supposed to build a pedestrian bridge a few years ago?

Regardless, this is a pretty cool advance in safety.

It would not help, they can't figure out the walk/dont walk lights and the cross walk.

The question now is how does this affect first responders?

I wonder how many injuries those airbags will actually prevent? Yes it will prevent the person from hitting the windshield, but they would still suffer the trauma of the initial impact with the car. 2,000 pounds of metal hitting your legs at 50 miles an hour is going to hurt.

Pretty much what I was thinking. When does the initial impact for an auto/ped EVER happen where those airbags are located?

This would be like putting airbags behind a driver's head, so AFTER they smash their face into the steering wheel, you would not get that whiplash.

Pretty useless IMHO.

Huh?? Head injuries are the big killer in pedestrian fatalities. If this airbag is hoing to catch the head of most these victims this will absolutely save lives. Discarding this development would be like chucking front airbags because the legs are still being crushed in a wreck.
