NYSP: The Cars The Next Generation Of Troopers Will Be Sitting In

Had a little fun photographing what the members who are signing up to take the upcoming NYSP Trooper exam will be driving should they be good enough to make it through the process.

Even if you are not sure you want the job right now, there's not going to be another test for another few years. Who knows what you will be doing four or five years from today? Maybe want a stable, rewarding career at a progressive major law enforcement organization to support you and your family. SO AT LEAST SIGN UP TO TAKE THE TEST!

Special thanks to Major Kopy, Sgt. Bridges, and all the troopers and civilians that I met who helped me out and had kind words about this site. It is truly appreciated It was also awesome to see the facility, meet some new faces, and see some of the cool new cars.

Here they are. Keep in mind all the cars are just delivered and are in various stages of being outfitted, and are not complete.

Shown are a 2013 Dodge Charger PP, 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV, 2013 Chevrolet Caprice PPV, and a 2013 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor.

What is the "H" representing on the cars? Ex the one car has "H208". According to the NYSP web site they don't have a troop "H"

There are a myriad of vehicle with "H" plates and "H" radio designations. That also includes our helicopters, i.e. 1H18, 1H43, etc, etc.

"H" simply means the vehicles are attached to some unit within Division Headquarters. It doesn't mean it physically turns out of HQ, simply that's the administrative assignment. The test vehicles are all assigned to Fleet Services, therefore given "H" designations as they are rotated around to different Troops. Feedback from the field is then considered for future purchases. A few dozen vehicles were recently purchased for field testing (Ford, Dodge, Chevy). Based on feedback, a huge order of the Ford Interceptors and a smaller order of Dodge Chargers is in, some of which have been moved out into the field and will be assigned traditional plate designations depending on their location.

Just saw the new Interceptor in Somers, looks nice. Plate readers on the trunk and only 1 spot light for some reason, new ones always seem to have one on each side.

I have a strong feeling you will be seeing a lot more Dodge Chargers and Chevrolet Tahoes in NYSP's future. They are the majority favorite of the troopers I have spoken with so far.

The Demo cars were purchased in black for economics sake, that was a standard available color. The large orders being placed now are being made for the custom blue color that your used to seeing.

I don't understand how anyone over 5'6" would enjoy being in a Charger, but to each his own.

The Taurus isnt any better either. I own a Taurus and drive one at work too, cant fit in either of them and my back KILLS me when I drive them.

The Caprice has too little hip room for even an average sized person, much less anyone over 6 feet. The Explorers are the best of the lot in my opinion.

Isn't this Chevy model a year old already? Is Chevrolet making the Caprice anymore. I did drive a "14" impala not long ago and it was great but looked nothing like the one they are talking about.

Impala and Caprice are two separate vehicles, with the biggest difference being drivetrain (Impala is FWD, Caprice is RWD).

The Caprice was reintroduced last year as a police-spec only vehicle, and is still in production.

The Impala was redesigned for the 2013 model year (I'm guessing you drove the redesigned model), but the old model (which has been offered in a police package for some time) has stayed in production for fleet and government purchasers. There is no police package of the new model yet (nor will there likely ever be.

The current Caprice has nothing to do with the Caprice of a few years ago. The only thing in common is the name. I believe the current Caprice is actually a Holden design. Holden is an Australian Car Company run by GM.

Thanks for the clarification on the models. Is this why the Caprice is made in Australia? Is it actually a Chevrolet? or does Holden build their own vehicles? Just wondering....

Holden, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, makes the Holden Commodore, a 'full sized', rear drive car for the Australian market. GM took the Commodore, added a few inches to the wheelbase, changed the grille and a few other details and renamed it 'Chevrolet Caprice', and brought it here to America as a 'Police Vehicle only'. They updated the Commodore for 2014, and will introduce that as a regular Chevy model for the public, called the Chevrolet SS(that's the name, SS). They will continue to also make the Caprice for Police only duty.

Been seeing a bunch in service in Westchester. Hope they are serving the NYSP well.

The interceptor utility is outselling the sedan by a large margain nationwide. I just think buying the utility makes more sense and in reality the majority of police vehicles in 3 years will be the tahoe and the utility. the sedans will be fading into history sooner than people think.
