Our Village trustees need to be thanked for approving the gift of our former Engine 87 to Broad Channel. Instead of only looking at how we can get more money, they decided to do the right thing to help fellow New Yorkers. Mutual aid is not merely helping a neighboring department when they have a large fire. It is also looking to help others in any way possible. We deployed Engine 86 and a crew for three days to the Woodmere FD on Long Island three weeks ago. I am proud to have served on that crew. It's like my Scouts say, "...to help other people at all times."

According to News 12 and various other news sources, the engine was donated to Broad Channel VFD. It was also filled with supplies

I may be out of line here but has there been any consideration by the village to donate the old pumper to one of the storm effected departments in NY or NJ?

It seems there was a software error, the shout edit feature was never "taken away", portions of that forum module somehow failed and stopped working.
Seth has upgraded the shoutbox software and things should be fully operational again.
Can someone please try editing their shout and report back if it was successful, or not.
    Thanks

It looks like a "Chess Move." He's on the Lt list but needs a little extra to get the promotion. So he sues the city and the carnivores (that's a new FDNY Society) and if he is not promoted he goes before some clueles judge and yells "harrassment".
I almost guarantee he gets promoted and a cash settlement on top. Then the city will then have to spend $3.6 million to train the whole department on the nutritional value of veggies as ruled by the judge.
Judge Garufis then gets a hold of the case and orders "rolling meat-outs" citywide. Companies will be required to give up meat on certain days. OOPS... it wasn't Garufis, it was the Pope that ordered that one.

Yonkers Fire has a ladder company (Spare L-78) with a full crew (Officer and 3 FF) plus a Battalion Chief and Aide in Nassau, I believe in Baldwin. They are returning tomorrow at 0800 after a 72 hour deployment.
YFD Mobile Command has been in Citi Field, with 2 of our SOC members, for the last several days. It is expected to be there for a long time. It is being heavily utilized by various OEM / FEMA, etc.
We also have a Haz-Mat Task Force operating in Suffolk County out of the Islip Airport alongside a career FD Haz-Mat team there. It consists of 2 YFD Battalion Chiefs, and approximately 4 YFD Company Officers, and 15 or so YFD Firefighters, as well as 1 Officer and 3 Firefighters from Hartsdale Fire, and 1 Officer and 6 Firefighters from Greenville Fire. All or most of these members have been trained to the Haz-Mat Tech level, and some to Haz-Mat Specialist level. They finish their 72 hours tomorrow evening I believe. They have been doing a very significant amount of work, the details of which I do not have. Suffice to say that local opinion has been very positive and they have been requested to extend their deployment for at least 72 more hours.
However, in light of the coming Nor-Easter, our exhausted personnel as a result of the Hurricane Sandy mitigation- preparation- response, and recovery efforts in Yonkers, and the recovery work on Long Island, and our very undermanned department (40+ members under authorized strength due to a delayed class hiring), we have declined the request to extend the Haz Mat Task Force deployment. We will see what effect the coming storm has, and if still requested, and able, we will redeploy another Haz Mat Group.
This is a horrible situation for so many, but it is nice to see how readily most First Responders as well civilians give of their time, effort, and money to attempt to ease the suffering and return us all to some sense of normalcy.
Once again, I could not be more proud of my YFD brothers, many of whom suffered damage to their own homes, as well as extended loss of electricity, yet continued to rise to the challenge and performed admirably during the many events of this last week.

Turns out the money has spoken.
I'm going to bet large commercial $ponsors have withdrawn financial support from the race because they don't want to be associated with the negative public backlash of promoting the event in the middle of such a widespread disaster.

Broad Channel lost at least one rig that I know of. I just got online yesterday. I got out of work Wednesday morning after working pretty much non stop from Sunday Morning til Tuesday AM. Then another 18 hour tour Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday Morning. We did 22,000 plus alarms between 0001 Monday to 2359 Tuesday. I cannot be prouder of the people I work with, and the Emergency Communications folks in the area. We got power back in Port Jervis sometime yesterday. I got home last night and all is well here. It is a mess out there obviously. Thoughts and Prayers for all who lost something or everything. I'll be back to work Monday.

It should be postponed or cancelled. The marathon requires huge amounts of police officers to properly cover it. I worked it last year, and in Manhattan it required 8 to 10 police officers per block . One number for total police officers required was 2000. The only way they can normally staff this event, and still provide proper coverage to the rest of the city is thru the use of Overtime, by ordering police officers to work their day off, a minimum of 12 hours. Right now as I am writing this, every gas station in the Bronx has at least 2 police officers assigned to it to prevent violence and maintain traffic flow. Most stations are out of gas. One station I spoke with said they may get delivery on saturday. Parts of the Bronx are still without power. In addition all police officers have been working 12 hour days since the day of the storm. Between work and volunteering at the firehouse I have seen my family maybe a total of 3 hours this week. I am one of the lucky ones, my biggest loss was a refridgerator full of food. One of my coworkers has lost everything except for the clothes on his back. His house will have to be torn down. Fortunately the.job gave him time off to deal with this, but most of us have yet to really deal with what ever problems they may have at home. I normally commute via mass transit, but with storm interruptions, and now tour changes that is no longer an option. More than likely I will be ordered in to work one of two days off I get this week. That means more gas I am going to have to use if I can find it. Morale was already low, and now with the storm, extra hours, stress if commute, patience is starting to wear thin. I am so glad that Bloomberg cares more for a bunch of foreign athletes than his own employees.

I believe it should be postponed or cancelled as well. I am not a resident of NYC, but I would be livid to see resources going to a sporting event while my neighbors are without essentials like water, food, shelter and security.
I understand the need to "get back to normal" and the economic boost, but when hotels are housing victims, and PD/FD/EMS have their hands full, majority of gas stations closed, neighborhoods haven't seen City officials, relief agencies or the National Guard, having such an event is ridiculous.
If the volunteers want to make a difference, there are plenty of shelters that need help and thousands of elderly residents that are stuck in high-rises without a way to get groceries and staples without working elevators.

It's absolutely insane and ridiculous to have it. Like the police officers, sanitation, etc. don't have enough to worry about already. And if citizens come forward to volunteer to help with the race - why don't they volunteer their time to helping out people that need help from the storm? Everyone knows New Yorkers are strong - they don't need to host a race less than a week after a major storm to prove it!
