With darkness quickly approaching, firefighters discuss the plan......

The "swimmer" for the operation, Arlington Firefighter John Ortiz, gets suited up.....

Firefighters check their web of ropes and pulleys that will be used to carry out the operation

Laughter and boredom..... The five await their trip back to the shore......

FF Ortiz prepares to make his way out to the stranded five....

Once FF Ortiz reached them, each was fitted with a safety flotation vest in preparation for the trip back into shore.........

With three girls on board, they listen intensely as FF Ortiz gives them some instructions.

A TransCare Medic uses his flashlight to illuminate the raft from the Town of Poughkeepsie side of the creek as everybody shares a little laughter.....

The first three girls are safely returned to shore w/o any additional injuries.....

A TransCare Medic with the help of the girls father, and the steadying hand of a DCSO Sheriffs Deputy, carry the girl back to the bus for evaluation and treatment of her injury.....

The second trip is complete and everbody is safely back on shore.....

A job well done...... Arlington Chief of Department Gallente speaks with a tired FF Ortiz.

Arlington Career Captain Palcher who directed AFD's SWRT smiles with the rest of his crew as they begin the task of breaking the safety lines down......

Firefighters carry the raft back up from the shore of the creek....

    Back up at the street.....

Chief Gallente, Career Captain Mihans, and Asst Chief Philips share a little down time back up on the street....

Arlington Firefighters push the raft back up into the top of their new Rescue 32-52......

Firefighter Joe Moore was the Chauffeur of 32-52 on this run.....

And lastly, a shot of 32-52 from the front.....

I want to send my utmost condolences, thoughts, and prayers to EMTBravo staff member, dedicated Mamaroneck Village and Empress EMS (where he also works Hawthorne) EMT, and Larchmont firefighter Vincent Nienstedt AKA "ems-buff", and his family, on the loss of his father yesterday. Vinny's father struggled with a long term illness, and Vinny was extremely dedicated to taking care of him, kept a very positive attitude, and was there by his fathers side every moment he could be. I'm sure Vinny's dad will be proud over the years looking down on him.

Just like in the recent thread on EMS in the county, there is little debate a problem exists. Who will finally play the role of a leader and start to take some action?
Posts like this one, calling out some FD do nothing. Everyone is well aware of the problems. Some may have their heads in the sand, but they are aware.
Instead of calling out this agency, offer some suggestions or solutions. Without offering something productive, this thread offers nothing.

I found this down in Harrisburg Fire Expo this weekend and it was transported to Poughkeepsie tonight (Sunday 5/22/11) The salesman said it will be delivered Monday.

And this absolute PIECE OF SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSomething I can't say here expects sympathy???? I feel for the truck driver, but God, that has to make him feel good knowing he brought scum like this to a stop. I can only imagine his first thought when he was it was a Police Cruiser though.
Props to John Q Public for seeing the officer in distress, getting out, (lol) throwing his hat to the ground and approaching the suspect with the officer. Smart move? Probably not, but still, if that were me, I wouldn't have hesitated a second seeing and officer in distress...
Did the initial officer draw his firearm at all? I am kind of surprised he was still attempting to subdue the subject with a taser once he was at/in the cruiser.
Am I Monday morning quarterbacking? No, I am just curious since we cannot see what is happening outside the frame.
I am very glad the important people in this incident (namely anyone but the suspect) were not seriously harmed. As for him, I think the piece of.... umm... garbage... can rot away in the festering corner of a jail cell for the rest of his days. Of course some lawyer will end up defending this scum, and plead insanity by way of intoxication, or whatever, I don't know all the legal terms, but we all know in the long run, people like this will skate with a metaphorical slap on the wrist... Sad state our justice system is in these days...

Too bad he didn't speak in front of the education department as well. Hopefully his testimony is passed on.
As a high school teacher, I can't tell you how happy I am to hear someone say this. Those have been my thought for far too long. There are some students in my classes who should definitely pursue a path other than college. I don't think society (or their parents) realize how important other career paths are and that they shouldn't be seen as consolation prizes. Keeping students who would truly benefit from a learning environment other than a classroom in a desk for four years helps no one - the student, society, etc. High schools used to offer classes like "shop". While those classes weren't meant to teach someone everything there was to know about carpentry, etc, at least students would be exposed to those essential skilled labor fields. If the class served to interest the student, they had an idea that there was something out there for them to study. I remember coming home with all sorts of stuff I made out of wood, metal, etc. I can't say I was great at it, but at least those classes were offered. And I knew how to use most of the tools in the classes already from when I helped my dad rebuild the porch, work on the car, etc. It's rare to find a school that offers classes like than anymore. There are the BOCES programs for students around Westchester (and other parts of NYS), but enrollment is often limited.
I've been reading educational literature lately in which there is a push for "college or career readiness". I've yet to see that happen, but it would be great if it ever did.

I absolutely agree with what he has to say, and glad someone's out there fighting for this important, brushed away by modern society cause.

I like that thought. An IA based solely on a media article should not generate an IA. Anything of that sort should end up going into the Regional Forum that it fits in.
If an IA is posted, and a media article is generated AFTERWARDS, then that article should be linked in the IA.

100% agreed with all preceding posters. The Staff is working to revise our IA guidelines, and other aspects of the site, all input is welcome!
Keep in mind that there are (or were) separate sites for those in separate areas.
    EMTBravo New England
    EMTBravo West
    EMTBravo Upstate (now defunct)
    EMTBravo Florida (now defunct)
Those defunct came down due to low activity, and recently, we have been seeing a similar trend in some of the other above mentioned extensions of Bravo. Those closures in part lead to a return to the main .NET, and, a higher rate of things posted from those areas (since the 'main/separate' outlet no longer exists). We may be able to adjust what forums within the main .NET appear in the News Feed, we are looking into this at the moment.
Also, for those people who "do not care about every fire in downstate NY", keep in mind where this site began, formed, grew from, and is still based around...
    Just some food for thought.
Firedude, thank you for taking the time to submit your thoughts, and to know where/how to find the Acceptable IA Types thread, bonus points to you.
BUT, in regards to your post about multiple IA's about the same incident, check out my thread from last year ;-)

Also, I understand it is nice to see all the content you mentioned in an IA (if available). I picked a few of my IA's to post as an example of what I like to include, which most of the items you post, are present.
    Rombout - Multi-Fatal Fire - 1-19-07
    Rombout - Structure Fire - 12-26-10
    Staatsburg - 2nd Alarm - 2-15-11
And, if you notice something like 2 IA's for the same incident, use the Report Button to let the Staff know! We try to keep up with everything that goes on, but it is not always feasible, or possible to see every post in every thread, all the time. Read the proper uses for the Report Button, and feel free to use it properly!!!

Consider this an official response from the department involved.
VelcroMedic1987, After reading your post It is clear that you were not in attendance and should probably refrain from your negative comments as they are mostly inaccurate.
First off if you were there you would know that the rig was not in reverse, it was moving forward at about 3 mph getting staged by the event organizers. The 87 year old gentleman was bumped by the rig as he walked in front of it while it was moving and sustained a facial laceration when he fell down. Nobody was "run over" ! He was never in intensive care and was actually released by the hospital and is at home currently.
This was during the set up for the event and not after it was over. That being said, none of the public was even there yet so rest well, no poor children will be traumatized.
And by the way, nothing was "swept under the rug", It was fully investigated by the police agency within this jurisdiction.
The department has been in contact with the gentleman and wishes him a speedy recovery.
Nothing more will be said on this forum by the department involved and any questions should be directed to Chief Ed O'Connell at 914-227-0233.

You think people would be much more outwardly appreciative of your work on this. I have no idea about the technical stuff that you had to deal with, but I already notice the site is much faster on this new server.
Thanks again Seth AND staff for your dedication to this site.....it really is an invaluable resource to this community.

Law states to move over if safe to do so - otherwise, SLOW DOWN and don't go blasting on by the emergency vehicle. Really, it's not rocket science.

I recently finished my EMT-B class, and, once I got out into the field and started dealing with real-life situations, I was very surprised about how unprepared I felt. My instructor for the classroom/lecture portion of the class was very knowledgeable and prepared us well to pass the state written exam. (As with anything else, I'm sure the quality varies quite a bit between instructors.) On the other hand, the quality of some of the lab instruction—as well as the amount of time alloted for lab instruction—left a lot to be desired. And it seems like those practical skills learned and practiced in lab—built upon a foundation of knowledge about anatomy and physiology from the classroom portion of the class—are the mark of good BLS.
From my very limited experience in the field, it seems like adding a greater emphasis on practical skills training might help produce EMT's that provide the higher-quality BLS that the original poster asked about. This poses the problem, though, of creating EMT-B classes that are prohibitively long; I wonder if adding additional hours to the class to accommodate expanded practical skills training might dissuade a lot of people from taking the class altogether. If the length of the EMT-B class was kept the same but time was shifted toward practical skills and away from classroom instruction, I wonder if that might create EMT's who are good with BLS skills but are not sufficiently knowledgeable about the anatomy and physiology behind what they're doing. I guess it's a problem of finding the right balance between lab and classroom instruction.
Although adding more emphasis on practical skills training might help with improving the quality of EMTs' BLS skills, I was surprised about how little effort a few people in my EMT-B class put forth. You could tell they weren't reading the textbook or practicing the skills on their own. I'm not sure if those people passed the state written and practical exams or not. Although those exams might do a little to help keep people with poor BLS skills from becoming EMT's, I'm sure quite a few people eek by and get their EMT-B certification (they weren't that difficult). I agree with what PFDRes47cue said about "instructors pushing kids through the classes." It might help the quality of BLS that is provided by EMT's if the bar was set a bit higher.
(This is my first post... please be nice!)

In some volunteer departments most Deputy Chiefs are just past Chiefs. Some who can't let go of power or lights. But if you are thinking of going to Deuty Chiefs my question would be, do you really need more Chiefs? In 2011 you should consider creating FF positions not Chiefs.

There were complaints lodged about "bashing" of said organization. Matter is currently under review.
We are trying to keep all conversation here fair and balanced. We do not permit 'bashing' and organization, and yet I am sure this will bring cries of 'censorship' from the membership as usual.
Can't have it both ways. If we leave it, we're "permitting bashing", when we take it down, we get people whining about "censorship".

I have been hearing a lot of fire departments when they either give directions to incoming apparatus, updates to dispatch or other situations the person speaking says what they need to and then finishes with "At this time" It isn't once in a while but almost every transmission.
Is there any reasoning for this, seems kind of unnecessary? We all know what time it is.
