They should be handed down to the next officer in the line.
I won't comment on what happens where I live.

    Yes, he Should.
    umm....Sentence fragments?
Just because the largest and most professional FD in the world does or doesn't do something doesn't mean that we all should follow suit. It's always dangerous on the fire scene, especially with all of the plastics and other crap that is burning. Remember the picture of FDNY putting out a garbage truck fire with no SCBA on? There's crap in there I don't want to smell when it's NOT on fire! If there's smoke, put on your SCBA!! If there's any chance at CO poisoning, put on your SCBA!! If there's any chance that you're going to inhale something you shouldn't, put on your SCBA!!

Since when do we leave our downed brother and venture off? If your brother is low on air, you probably are too. You're just dumping off air equalizing bottles. How are you going to save somebody if you can't save yourself. You're making yourself another victim,
I think the money is better spent on a RIT pack and crew.
  6. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by N1Medic in Fire department to begin charging fee for mutual aid
I disagree. Dual response IS mutual aid for at least one of the agencies. Dual responses are usually because one district doesn'thave enough manpower or equipment to respond on their own. If departments charged for dual response, they could earn tens of thousands of dollars.

first of all we all have to remember--the public is always watching and the camera is always there. Second--good practice(training)makes good firefighters--I am not saying that these aren't good Ff's just that training make you do things the same way. How many noticed that most if not all that did have pacs on did not ware them properly-- masks have waist straps for a reason--to take the weight off your shoulders and on to you hips. good officers will reinforce theses things at training sessions.
Cancer and firefighters--we just are not getting the message or we think it wont happen to us... lets get real in the fire service--its there its happening and will continue to happen as long as we make bad decisions.
the Chief smoking??--- lets call it stress relief
    just my thoughts

I think the best part of this whole video is.......the fact there is four to five firefighters and one chief in front of this burning store front and the camera guy has to tell the guys to get a "can" to put the fire out !!!!!
    I just don't get it ??
  9. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by Dinosaur in Chief Smokes Cigarette While Watching Firefighters Fail To Put On Masks At Working Fire
It goes to show how organization is becoming a more and more rare phenomenon. If these guys had riding positions and knew the job and their tools of the trade, there wouldn't be so much back and forth and wasted time and effort. Why didn't someone have the can as soon as they got off the truck? Where's the primary search beyond the doorway of the store?
I'm guessing that this was a truck company and that's why there was no hose line but the tactics were weak at best and the leadership/organization was abysmal. Of course, this is just from a short YouTube video so take it for what it's worth...

3:30.....no one has stretched a line. No one seems to have completed a primary of the original fire occupancy, some dude is cutting like hell to open a Bilco door and another guy has his hood up under his helmet.....no face piece on....
This is confusing me....and looks terrible

If they have both lists, they do it to exhaust the resident list first. My city, has a spanish speaking resident, city resident, Spanish speaking county, then the county list. As they said above, no real cut and dry timeline. Our last list, we hired 25. Some tests, 0. Our resident lists were first, lots of people couldn't pass the agility test, some didn't even bother showing up. we went to the county lists, and some were already hired elsewhere, so they were no longer interested. It varies by city, and county, but comes down to how many openings. Hope that helps clear it up somewhat.

In the real world these guys had the ability to utilize their respiratory PPE (aka SCBA) while working in close proximity to smoke and in some cases inside the smoke filled building and chose not to.Yes, there will be instances where you have to take immediate action and may take in some smoke doing it, but this was clearly not the case in this situation.
With what we now know about the link between the products of combustion and firefighter cancer, there's pretty much no excuse to not use your SCBA these days.

What do you mean " here we go" what didn't say that was wrong? That there should be one standard for firefighters.
  17. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by 4truck48 in Understaffed Mutual Aid Manpower
Before you knock the unions ( who keep pushing for increased training and manpower) about blocking Home Rule why not lobby for one standard for all firefighters in the state, paid or volunteer. That would include new firefighters, in service training for all firefighters, response times, manning on apparatus, promoting officers on qualifications not on election results. Not to mention mandatory retirement age so we don't have a rig responding with 3 or4 70 year old men on it with a 19 year old lieutenant because that was all that was around.

    Without manpower lost?
There isn't a guy driving a second or third truck now. These are designed to eliminate jobs.
I get that it all costs money, I do. I pay taxes too. But anytime something like this comes up, jobs are lost. Either thru attrition or cuts, jobs are lost.
Cities try out quints. Jobs are lost. Wow, we can have four guys in a station on one truck instead of eight on two??!! Wow, that's neat. And EFFICIENT. Anytime an administrator uses that word, there's likely an axe swinging somewhere.

Don't you mean FASNY, which lobbies against same standards of training for professional career staffing, and volunteer members? If I was a betting man, which I've been known to be, I'd place my money on the non-uniformed training standards of volunteers, vs known and required training of career firefighters as the reason for not being called into Mt. Vernon and a majority of other career/combo departments. Why would I roll the dice with the qualifications of those coming in, vs knowing when I call for an engine, I'm gonna get exactly what I asked for in terms of manning and qualifications?

  21. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by thebreeze in New FDNY Contract: All Ladder Trucks Must Have 5 Firefighters
Total ruse, shell game nonsense. The sh*t sandwich contract says that staffing level "C" is guaranteed. Currently "C" calls for five guys on the backstep of every ladder, but there is nothing preventing the city from going in and changing the definition of "C". Bought hook line and sinker by a few thousand guys.

Driver is included, the boss is not.
  22. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by JunebugKFD257 in NYS Firefighters Exam (Just a heads up)
    OK folks. Here's the deal:
The following link will get you about 95% of the information you need to know about the exam. You only need to focus on Entry Level Firefighter and/or Fire Protection Specialist, which is a state job. Anything pertaining to Fire Officers is not your concern.
    The link is: http://nysfireinfo.pbworks.com/w/page/27327765/Civil%20Service%20and%20Natl%20Cert%20Exam%20Study
    Entry Level Firefighter: http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/local/test_guides/fire_test_guide_01_09_06.pdf
Now that you read the information:
    1) Download or print the PDFs that have study guides included. Use them. Study them. Look a bit outdated? Yes, but then again, so is the test. Study some more.
    2) RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!!!!! Read the residency requirements. Do you qualify for residency? If yes, you will get preference over non-residents. If not, you are just taking the test for practice.
    3) MAIL THE APPLICATION ON TIME!!!! SUBMIT A CHECK OR MONEY ORDER!!!!! DO IT BEFORE THE DEADLINE!!! DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!!!!
You may qualify for more than one offering, so you follow the instructions on cross-filing. You'll pay a bit more, but your net is cast farther out.
    4) TAKE MARCH 19th OFF! HELL, TAKE THE 18th OFF TOO! If you work overnights, you want to be fresh for the test! Don't wait until the last minute to take time off.
    5) Be on time, bring plenty of pencils, a pen, something quiet to eat/drink.
Waiting game is months. Until then, get in or stay in shape. Drive carefully, stay out of trouble with the police. Look at your facebook or twitter pages. Anything that is sexist, racist, homophobic or would be offensive to others should be removed. The interview panel can use those things against you. All it takes is a screenshot, even if your pages is locked tighter than Fort Knox. You are trying to get a job that protects EVERYONE who works, lives, visits and travels in that municipality.

Awesome. Add more workload but it's all good because there's technology to make it better.
Just because it looks cool, or seems awesome, Doesn't mean it is.
Remember, one plow is now doing the job of two. With ONE driver. That means less drivers are needed. Less jobs.
Kinda like those self checkout lanes. Seems cool, but it's just a way to pull jobs off the line. You can have one person doing the same job four used to be doing.
  24. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by M' Ave in Declining Volunteers a Real Issue in Rural NY
Unfortunatly, this issue is not confined to "rural" NY. Declining volunteerism is an issue from the city line, north. That said, there are a lot of dedicated volunteers who could (and would like) to do more. The current system is truely a hindrance and a serious overhaul is needed. Smaller town and village fire departments shouuld be combined into larger area districts. The pool of active volunteers would better service a larger area and more call volume. In areas where necessary, by population and call volume, could be supplemented by a career staff.
Towns and villages really need to give up a little control and allow for a vastly superior, efficient reorganization. Emergency services can operate more effectivly on economies of scale, to some degree.
I live in Westchester, in a high-tax community. I work in the poorest congressional district in the United States. The residents of said congressional district recieve vastly superior Fire and EMS service. Why does anyone think this is acceptatble? Everyone, regardless of municipality should demand equal emergency service protections.
This is not a volunteer/career issue. This is not one municipality vs. another....this is a life safety issue for citizens and responders. We can better utilize our emergency personel, improve and better utilize volunteer service and compliment with career firemen when needed.
    Lets smarten up.
