Hi guys,
I've had a rough couple of months.
I became critically ill in June while on a trip to Chicago, and was hospitalized in ICU intubated for several days.
A few days after I got home to Texas, same thing happened, I had a procedure to corrrect the problem, but while I was intubated I aspirated vomit somehome and came up with severe double pneumonia. Physically, I can only use the computer for a limited amount of time right now, and am still extremly weak but am getting better by the day.
While I was in the hospital, I had no access to my phone or computer. I lost my job because I wasn't elegible for FMLA yet and I ran out of time that I could use, so I'm on a very tight budget. I can reapply for my job, but read on to find out why I won't.
My PayPal account that I use to pay for this site was hacked, and I was cleaned out of all the funds for this site. Although PayPal will be reimbursing me, it will be several weeks. I'm on a limited budget right now, and bills for the website are due soon and I can't bill, sell, or design any ads right now to raise money, nor will I be soliciting donations.
Earlier this week, my luck started to turn around the best it can at this point. A very awesome longtime friend and great person helped me out, big time. I am thankful for him and his bosses because his actions and concern gave me great motivation to keep going and renewed my passion. For right now, all I'm going to be saying is that I'm moving back to NY in the next week.............................I think I'll be much happier back there, especially because I miss all my friends from NY and working there. I LOVE Austin and Texas and will miss it (I've lived here for 4+ years already), and have been succesful and had awesome experience with the agencies I worked for , but at this point I need to start taking care of myself. After I was no longer healthy enough to be a career firefighter anymore, my heart was broken and I really wasn't the same-it destroyed me, but I've finally had closure on that and want to have the old pre-2007 Seth back.
There is MUCH more to this story, but please don't speculate.
I also apologize for not getting back to all those who hae been calling and emailing, it just gets a little overwhelming right now as I recover.
I have over 1,500 emails personally from friends, collegues, and EMTBravo members and related to me since May 26th, and eventually I will get to them all.
I traded in my car and sold off a lot of my things and bought a small 2005 Ford F-350 Super Duty/Winnebago Aspect 23' RV with only 7,000 miles on it. It's got all the comforts of home, and is cheaper and easier for me to live, especially since I will still have the home in Texas.
Does anyone know of RV Parks in the NY/CT area that are affordable and have electric and water hookups?
I was hoping I could park it at an FD or EMS, and in exchange join that agency and they would technically have a driver in house. I am stilll a certified Firefighter and Paramedic, and am capable of driving, operating, and maintaining any type of emergency vehicle. I can drive ambulances, midmount and rearmount aerials and tower ladders, engines (I am certified in pumping and water supply), rescue trucks, tankers, brush trucks, etc. If someone knows of an agency that could work something out with me, I would greatly appreaciate it. Email me at seth@emtbravo.com if you know of anything, even if short term.
I hopefully will have a job lined up, but I am looking for a second job, if anyone knows anything that's open and pays decent. It doesn't have to be emergency services. Email me at seth@emtbravo.com .
I wish I never gave up some of my Westchester jobs I had, I always thought the grass was greener and kept moving up jobs, but I look back now and had it great right where I started.
Thanks guys for your concern, and whatever help you can offer me. I hope that some of you guys can come up and hang out with me when I get back.
There is more to what I am going through, but please don't speculate or comment on that.

NYS statutes do not obligate an individual citizen, regardless of training, to respond to a situation or provide care unless there is a formal duty by job description or role expectation. Such a duty to act arises from participation with an agency having jurisdiction.
That says it all right there. Not an EMS response agency, no EMS responsibility in your job description, and no EMS expectation from you role equals you are a firefighter and not an EMT.

I think if you looked at FDNY houses this is the rule rather than the exception. Many time you will hear them referred to as "their buff" in reality this is usually a physically or mentally handicapped individual who is a fire house fixture. Every house I've been assigned to has one or more. Some are more famous than others e.g. Engine 64. I learned not to feel sorry for them and see they could have an enjoyable life in spite of what life dealt them. It shows why this is the best job in the world--the people you work with.

Great job Lansing!! Its good to see something nice written about the emergency services once in a while.
The guy at Engine 64, if its the one I am thinking of, I met during a ride along in the early Nineties. He was incredible in his own way

An EMT would not have a duty to act if they are operating as a firefighter in a non ems agency. The duty to act applies when you are with an agency with the authority to respond. His FD has no authority to respond to medical emergencies.

So about $3.25 a square foot. I thought I read this house was about 7660 square feet (round up to say 7700x $3.25= $25,025. With a 30 year mortgage that turns out to just $69.51 before interest. Figure about $75 to 80 dollars a month to provide sprinklers in the house. Maybe they should have put them inside instead of watering the grass

If you are on scene with the FD you act as a firefighter. Your agency is not an EMS agency and puts themselves at risk if they put you to work as an EMT. In NYC all firefighters whether they are EMTs or Medics on the outside operate as CFRs on an assignment. You should address this with your dept to establish a definitive policy. The district has a lawyer, put him to work.
I don't know of caveat superior. I know caveat emptor, Let the buyer beware.
The California case is from 2008 and was specific to California because the decision spoke directly to the language of the law. That being said, a similar decision could conceivably come down in NY or they could find their own reason to hang you out to dry.

Just trying to get some background information on an area that is a little grey to me. I will use myself for the following example but my comments do not reflect my department, they are solely my own thoughts.
If I am an NYS certified EMT-B and I ride with a NYS Fire Department that does not run EMS am I at all liable on scene. If I am at a car accident with the FD and no EMS is on scene am I obligated to act? I am in uniform but not an EMS uniform. Are FD's held liable if they have non EMS trained people hold c-spine until EMS arrives? What about if this non EMS Fire Department has an EMT or Paramedic hold c-spine? Is the FD liable? Is it best to just not have anyone assess the patient and to just wait until EMS arrives? If an FD that does not do EMS has certified EMS personnel should this be made known on scenes if EMS if not present yet? Or should it be hidden?
Personally I feel obligated to provide patient care rather than stand around waiting for EMS or a tow....
Again, the above may be stupid questions... if so my apologies. Just looking for some clarification.
Thanks in advance for any insight,
Madison

The term "Re-Kindle" should never be used.
How can a fire that is extingushed, "Re-Kindle"? It can not.
When a fire occurs in the same structure hours (or days) later, one of three things has occured:
1) The arrsonest returned to complete the job
2) The fire dept. did a poor job of overhaul and missed something (most common with a smells & bells or a small "room & content" incident)
3) The fire dept. made a determination that after a major fire (often with collapse) that there were no exposure issues and no way to do overhaul (without heavy equipment) and often it was in the best interest of the safety of the members to regroup and wait.
Based on the size of this fire...sounds like #3. so it was not a "Re-Kindle".

How many home owners realize that they're in a non-hydrant area? Of those that do, how many know what exactly that means for their fire protection? My father is an educated man rarely completely ignorant of a subject. He long ago realized that in the event of a fire if it goes beyond that first room he prefered it burn to the ground to save him on demolition and waste hauling costs. He was also well aware of the pitfalls of volunteer fire protection and had his home well insured. This was all many years before I became a volley. The one consolation he took was there is a hydrant 50' from our propety. Only after I joined the local FD did we find out how useless that hydrant was.
The point to this ramble is the average home owner has no idea. They see an FD full of trucks a few blocks away and assume they're protected. Since FDs are the last to advertise their ineptitude who is going to tell the homeowners they're on their own?

I am not positive, but feel safe to assume that every EMS agency has triage equipment (i.e.: tags, tarps, etc). This might be a requirement but don't quote me.

grumpy, we've been getting that too. Just calls coming in with nothing but a location and a PD 10-Code. I will give one that I had to laugh about. Because, to PD, EVERYTHING is a haz mat job. Comes over as a haz mat incident. Strong smell coming from a dumpster. It's 85 degrees at 1030 in the morning with 53% humidity. HOT GARBAGE!!!! One I didn't laugh about, and actually made the papers. Water condition, basement apartment. Truck company comes in, "Get us an Engine and EMS, her water broke, she's having a baby."

My boy, TL-2 summed it up quite nicely. You called 911 and got a civilian employee of the PD. To echo what was said here, if you had said 79th Street Boat Basin, you probably would not have had as big of a problem. In all fairness, most of these calltakers are overworked, underpaid, and aren't given the slightest bit of encouragement to learn outside of what they are taught. Not to mention, they do work in a pretty hostile work environment, where every minor screw up is given either a write up, or results in a loss of vacation time or pay. One other thing, depending on the name of the landmark, they can't put it in their system. Remember the shooting at City Hall a number of years back?? They couldn't put CITY HALL into their CAD. They can't put the bridges in for the most part. They need cross streets. If you had said, Hudson River and 79th Street that would have also helped.
They weren't trained properly in taking fire calls, and still screw stuff up on a pretty consistent basis. When you call 911 in NYC, you get the PD Calltaker who enters the information, sends it to the FDNY CAD/EMS CAD through a link, then conference calls you in to either us, or EMS. We take the info, basically to make sure PD didn't screw it up, and update the incident.
Now, here is the difference between us and them. They have folks who are nothing but professional call takers, who have it beaten into their heads to take calls at face value. They are not allowed to use common sense, and any inkling of common sense is quickly discouraged. Prior to UCT, you have no idea how many calls we disregarded, or told the caller the FDNY was not responding because it wasn't a fire department issue. Not so with UCT, they send us EVERYTHING!!!! I'm not going to give examples. One of the other disadvantages, is when you call 911 is that it isn't borough specific. They take calls for the whole city. I've worked most of my career between the Bronx and Manhattan, and I was born and kinda raised in Queens, and even I don't know all the streets. Although through out my experience, if I hear a street I am not familiar with, I can either ask my colleagues, or ask what borough it's in and have an idea of where it is. The way the building is set up, I spent sometime right in between EMS and PD, and overheard a lot of the operators. I remember one night recently, the calltaker kept repeating Bronx River Road and Nereid. I looked at her supervisor and said, Why don't you put in Webster Avenue and Nereid, or Webster and the City Line. I got ignored for a good two minutes.
We are not allowed to have professional call takers. We train our dispatchers to do everything. This takes up to 10 weeks of training. If one of my guys on a call doesn't know where something is, there is a strong possibility someone on my platform does.
If you need the FDNY or an Ambulance, the proper number to call in the boroughs are:
Manhattan 212-999-2222
Bronx 718-999-3333
Brooklyn 718-999-4444
Queens 718-999-5555
SI 718-999-6666
One of my dispatchers will answer the phone, and we will get you what you need.
