This is a problem throughout Westchester County. The average price of a home in Rye is over $1.5 Million dollars. If you can afford a $1.5 Million dollar home, either you are working your ass off to afford it and would never have the time necessary to be a volunteer firefighter, or they simply wouldn't have the demeanor usually associated with persons who volunteer to be firefighters.

Is that a full-time salary or part-time salary plus benefits?
Not saying it's a bad idea but what's the plan? Sounds like a smart way to add 125K to their reserve funds while seeming very proactive. And they probably have 125K in their reserve funds already so they didn't need to do this to have the funds available in 2016 (or 17) or whenever this is going to happen.
I am not at all opposed to the idea, I just think it may ultimately be the death of the volunteer department Somers.

Why become an officer if you can't become chief?
Why go to training if you can't become an officer? (not firematic training but higher level, officer type training)
Why should I volunteer if the chief is getting paid?
Will the first paid chief be one of the commissioners or family member of a commissioner?

    See? Lots of unanswered questions.

Remember "Freedom isn't free" It is paid for by the blood of our veterans. We often attribute this to those who have died in the line of duty. But also remember those who have have spilled blood and survived. Many of our veterans not only have to live with the death of their comrades but also a part of them died in the battlefield. Then they have to come back to a changing world that does not appreciate their sacrifice.
I think the popular quote says it best "Some gave all but all gave some".
I know its not politically correct but say a prayer that all our serviceman and women come home safely.

The PFD has been understaffed for years. They work with 2 officers and 10 firemen staffing 3 engines and 1 ladder and 1 tower out for 3 firehouse per shift. They average 5500 runs a year with a good amount of working fires. The engine you see out on Hooker ave is not in service ever. The rigs that do run are pretty beat up. They are past the point of doing more with less and the 7 hires will help but they need more.

Yes I do believe that it is cowardly to remove the flag now. As has been pointed out it has been flying there since the 1960's. Thus is is not any more or less racist now than it was in 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 ect. To remove it now because it has suddenly become something just because someone who did something bad also happened to own this flag is cowardly. There have been many attempts to remove not only this flag but to change any flag containing this flag and most if not all have failed. Regardless of what motivated the state of South Carolina to fly this flag after 50 years of so, it could be argued that even this new use of the flag has become historical. History should never be revised.
I have an idea. Because in our oh so hateful past, we used to think of witchcraft as a crime, and because fire was used in some but all executions of witches, and because we now understand witches to be nice nature loving people, perhaps all fire departments should have to change the name to extinguishing departments as the mere presence of the word fire could potentially be seen as possibly offensive to a small number of people. For that matter should red even be allowed as the color of fire apparatus? I mean it too reminds one of fire. Perhaps we should remove the Maltese cross, as that is a symbol of the crusades and could be offensive to both Jewish and Muslim citizens and certainly could be seen as a sign of medieval violence.
Or maybe we could just calm down and grow up. Crimes are committed by criminals not the posters criminals hang on their walls.

This should be a rational discussion, however it is not about the war between the states and it never was. If this had anything to do with that terrible time in our history, then this would have been brought up some other time since the 1870's. This recent disdain for a flag that bears some resemblance to a flag used by some confederate forces is all about political correctness. It is being tied to a horrible event that it had little to do with.
While it is tempting to say that we should get rid of things that divide us, the fact is that if we continue to revise history then we have created a worse crime than any historical event could have. This is about a very vocal minority pushing their agenda on the rest of the country. We should never forget those that died in the war between the states, on either side. If we forget it, it will happen again.

While something needs to be done, an assault on The Constitution and The Bill of Rights for LEGAL GUN OWNERS is not the answer.
We all know Gov.Cuomo is aspiring for a future presidential run, and (IMO) this is nothing more than a hot-button topic for him to ride on.
For a snapshot of the effect that the toughest gun laws in the nation are capable of, all one needs to do is take a look at ChIcago, the guns-down, murder capitol of the country.
Is this what you want for NY, too, Mr Governor?
  15. fire2141 liked a post in a topic by JetPhoto in NY SAFE Act of 2013 (Gun Law)
I do not own a gun, I have shot guns in target practice and don't usually have comments about the gun laws however I have a real problem with this knee jerk reaction by someone who wants to be President some day. I don’t understand how the government sees this as a way to curb gun violence. This law kicks law abiding citizens in the chest making them potential criminals if they have 8 bullets in their in a magazine instead of 7 (I know there are restrictions now but for legal gun owners who have a 10 round clip and would now only be allowed to have 7 it can be a problem) . The government goes after the so called "assault weapons" some of which are a basic shot gun with modern day plastic pieces attached.
The majority of shootings that happen in this country are by criminals who can care less what the law says. Few are committed by legal gun owners.
While some feel the opposite is the way to go...
If you look at the city of Chicago who has the stingiest gun laws in the nation, you see that criminals don't care about laws! Dozens are shot or killed every day and even more on weekends.
Now NY plans these ridiculous laws let us not forget the federal government plans on revising the laws as well. The people must rise up and defeat the government on this one, Go after the true criminals not the guy who follows the law

While slavery was the driving issue of the civil war, the greater issue was that of states rights to govern themselves vs an overbearing central government. The Confederate flag is a symbol of a war lost. I don't believe that slavery as it existed in the 1860's was morally correct. Unfortunately, the greater issue was also lost as we have seen in the 150 years since, especially in the last 7 years as the central government has taken or attempts to take over nearly every aspect of our lives. Not through the legislative branch as designed, but through the judicial and executive branches and the regulatory agencies that have no oversight.
I have a Confederate flag. I am not a racist. I think there are those that want to make it a symbol, a cause if you will, of an unjust time in our history. The leftist, socialist elites that permeate our society are intentionally sowing strife and discord between the races. That flag has a place in our history. I, and others, may not agree with your reason(s) for displaying it, but I support your right to it.
Will the government next try to abolish use of the Gadsden flag as a symbol of those that do not agree with their overreach?
    And after that?
This country needs to wake up and people need to open their eyes to what is going on and what's going to happen.

Not sure if anyone has seen this. Rosenbauer did a rig with the Commander cab and their European AT3 body. I think it looks pretty slick, though with a newly designed cab that fits the contours of the body could make for a slick truck here in America lol. I know that American rigs and European rigs are pretty different, but I gotta hand it to Rosenbauers AT3. I've seen some very impressive compartment setups that just give me a plethora of ideas for a new rig down the road.

You are really good at using Google images, I will give you that. I'm aware that fire department buses and transport trucks exist. I am also acutely aware that space ships exist. Yes, it is still dumb. We're not talking USAR or wildland. It's not a crew of part time college kids with backpacks and rakes. You have a fire station with firemen and fire trucks and now you want everyone to buy a bus to take instead of the fire truck. You are advocating buying 8-24 duplicate SCBAs, hand tools, saws, flashlights etc. To put on a transport bus. To take to a routine fire. Yes. This is still very dumb. Also if all the firemen take the bus, who is going to be there for the fire engine anyway? I'm starting to see the writing on the wall of why to stop reading this site. I'm arguing with someone on the internet if firemen should take a bus or a fire engine. Time to find a new hobby.

There is no question that there would be some benefits to consolidation. The benefits probably would outweigh the costs. However I reject the idea that there would be more tankers in a consolidated department. Sure the number of engines will probably decrease, but to say that Engines Trucks and Rescues will decrease but Tankers will increase is simply foolish.
As for the number of Rescues, like with all apparatus two things should be taken into consideration, call volume and geography. With Rescues you have one more factor to take in and that is duties. In most suburban departments the Rescue handles extrication. In NYC that is handled by the Ladder Co. How many Rescues would they need if all pin jobs got a Rescue? For that matter how many would they need if NYPD ESU stopped doing MVA's? Comparing FDNY to just about anywhere else is far too often a great example of apples and oranges.
