NYS Fire Code Chapter 5 - Section 508...  508.5.2 Inspection, testing and maintenance. Fire hydrant systems shall be subject to periodic tests as required by the code enforcement official.

Section 508.5.3 specifically calls out private service mains and water tanks which need to be inspected, tested and maintained in accordance with NFPA 25.

  2. NYS General Municipal Law Section 204-C Plan for arson investigation

The governing body of each county except a county contained wholly within a city, and the governing body of any city in which a county is wholly contained shall develop a plan for arson investigation within such county or city.  Such plan shall be submitted to the office of fire prevention and control for approval. No plan shall be approved unless it provides for the coordination of fire, law enforcement and prosecutorial services.

Furthermore, Section 204-d requires that the fire chief of any fire department or company shall, in addition to any other duties assigned to him by law or contract, to the extent reasonably possible determine or cause to be determined the cause of each fire or explosion which the fire department or company has been called to suppress.

  3. Good job. Reminds me of the time my (then) boyfriend and I were on the Hudson River just south of the Bear Mtn Bridge - saw a boat of people partying, and a few hundred yards away a swimmer in obvious distress. We went to the swimmer (who had a boat cushion keeping her afloat), managed to pull her out and get her safely back to the other boat.

We declined the offered beverages and went along on our merry way.....another example of why alcohol and boating do not mix!

  4. I don't have a picture yet, but while looking on a box I brought back from my dad's a few years ago, I found a small leather case, about 2x2 inches. When I opened it up, I was surprised to find a badge, it is marked on the front FDNY and in the center BUFF. I have done a quick look around the internet but haven't found anything that matches this.

Tonight, I took the badge of the holder to see if there was a makers mark, there wasn't one but there WAS an engaging that says "from E227 to Bob 12/52". So, this was presented to my father in 1952- I'm wondering if this is a one-off...pretty neat on any case! And yes I will post pictures!

  5. I'm actually reviewing a proposal to put solar panels on our house. One of hte things my husband and I asked the company representative was what happens to the electricity if the power goes out. The answer we got was that it doesn't go anywhere - so yes, it would still be in the panels, and potentially in the cabling that goes to the cut-off switch. We also have a back up generator, so if that is running, the solar energy again would not be going anywhere....

As for cost, after the current tax credits and NYSERDA incentive, our system would cost us out of pocket just under 10k. That averages out to $68-/month, (15 year loan) including the National Grid line charge. Oir last electric bill was $134-, the one before that $184-...and we are not expecting it to go down. We can also pay off the loan early, if we paid $100-/mo it would be paid off in about 8 years. This is a system designed to produce 100% of our expected usage, so after the loan is paid off, we would be paying around $20/mo for the line charge - or whatever National Grid is charging.....

To me it makes sense, also, our panels would be on the front of the house, and I would also place some type of label at the meter. Our standby generator is right there too, so no missing that....

  6. Those who know me, know who I am, and if someone messages me I do share my info.....

One primary reason I use a username is to keep away trolls - when message boards are public it is amazing the amount of information you can get off of them! I Also use the same/similar name on multiple forums, so someone on here and the FH Forums should know it is me.....

  9. A fire department in Minnesota (Chanhassen, Minn.) has loaned an engine to Broad Channel.....here is the link to the story on Firehouse.com - http://www.firehouse.com/news/10826465/donations-made-to-fire-departments-following-sandy

    Minnesotans Loan Pumper, Donate Gear

The City of Chanhassen, Minn. has loaned a spare pumper truck to the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department in Queens.

During Sandy, the department lost two ambulances, two fire engines and several command vehicles.

Chanhassen had planned to sell Engine 22 at the end of 2012, but has now decided to loan it to a fire department in desperate need.

ATS Specialized Inc. in St. Cloud offered to make the $6,000 transport of the rig for free.

Neighboring fire departments worked to fill the truck with items including boots, helmets, air monitors, extrication tools and power supplies.

The Mdewakanton Sioux tribe is also chipping in, sending a truck with close to $20,000 in gear to follow the apparatus.

The rig was expected to arrive in New York City on Nov. 7.
