I think you are right, some people SHOULD get a grip. I merely stated facts, you sir, read too far into it.

Actually I would consider it professionals having discussions about their trade. I'm sure you would comment if it is something on whatever it is you do for a living.
If anyone wants cake..go to the bakery. You can get rose colored glasses at sunglass hut. Crying towels at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Their is always use for pats on the back..and always time to discuss things for learning later. How many more times do we need to say..we need to get over ourselves and stop the crying when anyone discusses something different.

Hey probie, you seem to have it all figured out. Do you have any idea how a fire should go?
Just remember All the critics include the entire insurance industry. They told this home owner that because the FD score 10% on an open book test they get to pay an extra 40-50% for insurance every year since 1981 (actually on the previous home back to the 1920's) compared to depts that are within 25 miles of them.
You should be amazed, I am stunned at how backwards we really are. There is more water than you could ever need 50' off the road, less than 400' from the front door. But more than a half dozen departments have no idea how to use it.
When I was a probie, every instructor I had said, "if you want to be a good fire fighter, then shut your mouth and open yours ears....maybe, just maybe you will learn something"
We did not have the internet then...so now its fingers & eyes instead of mouth and ears.

Here's one, was there any thought about calling county FieldCom? This event is going on 8 hours in subfreezing temperatures, with a lot of manpower, departments, and chiefs/coordinators on scene. Especially with different frequencies and different departments from other counties(states) being used. Wouldnt it be nice to have a big whiteboard and plenty of room to "set up shop", not to mention its warm....
Isn't that what this truck is for?
On another note, stay safe everyone involved. No injuries is good, especially with the ice and cold.

It's like the old saying, you get what you pay for. If we(public services) start doing things for free because it's what's morally right, we won't be around very long. The people will fight and say, as was stated above, he didn't pay and still got protection, so im not going to pay. Our money will dry up faster than you can blink an eye.

Maybe the solution is to use stagging. If you approach the IC for an assignment (and he didnt request you), he should say: "go over to staging to check in". Now we find out who you are, what dept., etc. and we can assign you as needed...or not.
Its perfect, just like our staffing, response times, training, resource utilization and our mutual aid.

Thank you for being openminded enough to reconsider your original position after being presented with a differing opinion. Your manly ability to not take these things personally and to acknowedge that others have correctly pointed out a flaw in your original reasoning is admirable and unfortunately, all too rare in these parts.
These are life and death issues to those of us who have dedicated our lives to the Fire Service profession. A young man such as yourself with passion and an open mind will likely go far and be a credit to our vocation.
Please be careful who you listen to in regard to these matters and don't fall for the typical false accusations of volunteer bashing, which is not at all what this is all about.
It is bashing though of course. It is bashing of misleading information, misplaced priorities, and failed leaders.

Kid, just listen to the chief.
I appreciate that you like fire trucks. I like fire trucks too. I like getting paid to ride on them and I like looking at pictures of them on Emtbravo. I also appreciate that you're new. I was once new as well, in fact it wasn't that long ago. Someday, you might be sitting in a fire truck and look around the cab of the big fancy engine they bought you and see a 65 year old man driving and a 80 year old fire police in the back. Or you might be fortunate enough to get on a paid job and have one other guy with you or you might even be by yourself. And you will not care how many red trucks are coming but rather what the hell are you going to do with what you've got.

This is an interesting thread. IMO it really does a lot to demonstrate the mindset held by many members of the Fire Service in this region which is such a disservice to those we are sworn to protect and to our own fellow Firefighters....with the exception of helicoppers question regarding manpower (and he is a cop, not a Firefighter), and one other question and answer in regard to White Plains manpower, the whole thread so far is all about how many apparatus respond, with no mention of personnel.
Guys, Firefighters put out fires...Firefighters who are adequately trained and certified for interior firefighting and physically capable. A certain amount and type of apparatus, of course, is necessary, however, listing how many apparatus respond to structure fires is not only worthless in terms of assessing a department's capabilities, it is misleading.

LOL. Do you really think if it was a MCI that radios wouldn't have been lighting up everywhere? Although I experienced a problem where I had to sit on a penetrating trauma because I couldn't get an ambulance...some things still hold true..hot jobs will get covered.

I've known you for a long time..so with that said...you know I'm open and honest with communication so here it goes.
Hate to tell you..but you're the one that is dead wrong. You just called someone out that you have no idea who they are..which I do...and you couldn't have missed the boat more on that one my friend. I have to wonder..I pretty much say the same thing he just did all the time...so why not call me out?
Now moving along...I always like when cute little quips come out. First...professional providers bust their rear just as hard...which by the way if I remember correctly you work as a professional in the field. Second...by raising awareness of issues that many other won't for the lack of a better term "man up" to, he is being part of the solution by using facts and caring about service. The public and those of us who are forced to wait for ambulances don't give a damn (sorry but that's the word I feel needs to be used) that you or anyone else feels they are busing their rear to do the best you can. This isn't making a delivery or service call to get cable installed or fixed...this is public safety which their are standards that should be adhered to. Most of us are understanding that mutual aid at times will take place...but to me this should be 1% or less of total call volume. So yes...I often do have a problem with substandard inconsistent service. So know what? Is it too bad for me? Or too bad for the public when there are agencies who can find money in budgets and have billing opportunities to have a more consistent service? But what do I know...I'm a professional who when I wake up tomorrow I will be focused on nothing more then my profession and as part of the solution raising awareness of coverage issues..will be labelled anti volunteer, and apparently now unknowing of the hardships of those volunteers trying to cover calls with limited manpower.... Oh wait..be part of the solution right? Here's a solution...stop worrying about control, pride or whatever else holds up progress and hire staffing.

You seem to be taking this a little too personal. Let me clarify by saying that no one said the Mofire390 didn't do his part, if thats the truth that you go above and beyond, I applaude your efforts. I also feel for you if you are one of the few in your agency that actually do. Was my statement bold, yes, irrational or inaccurate, I don't think so. For your info as well, just because my current affiliation says "Career" doesn't mean I haven't spent time in the volunteer ranks, I spent several years as a volunteer. My feeling has always been that if we didn't have sufficient manpower to carry out our tasks, hire people to do the job. Like I said, there has to be a point where we put public service before our pride and make something happen.

On Sunday December 11th at approximately 11:16 PM Continental Village Fire Department and Peekskill Ambulance were dispatched to the Bear Mountain Bridge Road for a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Upon arrival it was discovered that a BMW was traveling westbound on the road when it left the roadway and went over a 20 foot embankment coming to rest on its roof in a stream. Firefighters and EMS personnel removed the driver from the vehicle, strapped him into a stokes basket and carried him up the slope to an awaiting ambulance. The driver was transported to Westchester Medical Center with a State Trooper riding along in the Ambulance. Fire units remained on scene until around 1 AM when the vehicle was safely removed from the woods.
