The engie crew was behind the 8 ball as soon as they arrived, only having a 2 man engine crew. The home owners had opened the doors and windows to the house when they smelt smoke, glass was melted out of the doors giving the reason they where not shut, Venting wasnt the number one priority because there was not enough people for the task, 250 ft cross lays are what is on the truck and only 150ft was needed, powerlines where down to the A/D side of the house (that was the popping) this is why kinks where chased for so long because of the tight area for 250ft of 1 3/4, smooth bore was chosen because thats what the officer and nozzleman perfered, nozzle was not changed in the door way as you can clearly see in the video it was around 3 feet out side before the hose was even charged and as the officer was chasing kinks, and the Leather helmet comment really what is this pre school.. a fashion show.. every one has personal preference, The department did the best they could with what they had. betting none of you where there so please dont bash it, there may be many things wrong but low volunteer levels are hurting every department and this is a prime example, no need for the monday morning quarterbacks.

I see lots of emergency vehicles with rear and forward facing blue lights in NY, some FD's, EMS, some other PD's. I do not think anyone cares enough to bother them.
Is it legal in NY? I do not know, it does not intrigue me enough to look it up.
I do not care and I wonder why anyone else would.

This is akin to when the CDC published the "How to Make a Zombie Apocalypse Survival Kit" to their website a few years ago. Given the zombie fad that's been striking the population over the last decade or so this is definitely a great way to get people to read about preparedness and think about the things they'll need for when a disaster does happen.

Because our culture demands that it must be someone else's fault. Nobody takes responsibility for anything and we should not expect the parents or guardians to take responsibility for the fire or the lack of warning. It must be someone else's fault.

Not that I am aware of. The long term storage of the data helps to determine a persons patterns, whether they are suspect in a crime or not. Just like your EZ-Pass tag is read in places no where near a toll. The government also uses facial recognition technology scanned from drivers license photos to build databases. We are increasingly under surveillance. Evermore it is up to the individual to prove his innocence rather than the states' duty to prove guilt.

Reposting something I put on another forum about this topic with a few additions.
While they certainly acted outside their scope of training and equipment, the NYPD Housing Bureau environment isn't like anything we have here in CT. Unless I'm mistaken, most NYPD Housing beats cover a few buildings, those floors are where they patrol. Its not like they flew halfway across Brooklyn, parked their car in front of the hydrant and ran up, these Officers spend their whole shifts in these high-rises. Was taking the elevator a poor decision? I think the answer to that is obvious. But there's another issue at play here.
It seems to me that there are a lot of people in the fire service who are quick to excoriate a couple of Police Officers trying to do something to help the people in their beat, but some of those same people have nothing negative to say when Bubba rolls the tanker over doing 90MPH to an Activated Fire Alarm and neither him nor the guy in the right seat were wearing seat-belts. And why not? Because its out of respect for the families and the department affected.

My point is, members of our service have made our share of missteps, mistakes and/or plain old bad decisions from time to time, but we don't drag people through the mud. We wait until we know the facts and we show respect for those trying to bury their lost before we start picking things apart. Why don't P.O.s Guerra and Rodriguez get the same courtesy? We're on the same team here, folks.

As someone else stated, the NYPD Commissioner has identified a training gap and has stated publicly that they are going to work to improve it to prevent further injuries or Line of Duty Deaths. Which is more than some Fire Departments can say...

My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Guerra's family and his Brothers and Sisters in the NYPD. Hoping for a full and speedy recovery for Officer Rodriguez as well.

I respect the hell out of our brother and sister police officers and I have no issue with any of them attempting to make a rescue if the opportunity presents itself. But I do have one issue, and I can monday morning quarterback this particular incident I am about to discuss because it happened in my district and I was first IC, then operations for the incident.
My issue is this; we were requested to respond to a residence for "Excellerant spilled in the residence" (exactly how dispatch gave it to us). When I got on the radio and stated I was enroute I asked for more information, they simply repeated the original, stating that there was some type of excellerant spilled in the residence, nothing further. So I wrote it off to being a fuel oil tank leaking in the basement or maybe someone accidentally spilled some gas in the garage or something......BOY was I wrong.
I pulled up to the scene in our first due engine/tanker to a scene loaded with state troopers. I get out and approach the one trooper and he tells me there is a woman inside doused in gasoline and threatening to light herself if they went in to get her. I FLIPPED out, and told the trooper we should all evacuate to a safe distance based on the fact the house was FILLED with gas fumes and was explosive (if the LEL was right) but we were taking no chances.
This trooper failed to give us all of the information when we were dispatched, and we should have been staging on the road until the trooper negotiator talked her out or worse...They allowed us to drive right up to the scene and park next to the house in a circular driveway and said nothing to us. My panties are in a bunch as well and I will also not get over it. And this is odd for my area because we have a great working relationship with all of the LE agencies in the county and have always worked well together. Why did they fail to give us appropriate notice and give us all of the information, even if it was over the cell phone? We could have all been killed, blown away.

I know we have been down this road before and it just would not sit right if we don't bring it up again. When I respond to a call and I am advised by 60 Control to stage away till PD arrives I do just that. I can tell you that for every shooting, stabbing and assault call I respond to I ask if PD in en route. I also advise that we will stage away until clear to enter the scene. Do I want to help someone in distress? Yes I do. Do I want to be part of the action? Yes I do. Do I want to injure or kill one of my Brothers under my supervision and not return them home the same way they came to work. NO FRIGGIN WAY!!! Do we need to get on the radio to advise PD to stage away till our arrival? 2 Members of Public Safety are in critical condition for the simple fact that :
#1 They are not dressed in proper fire gear
#2 They are not wearing SCBA
#3 They most likely do not have elevator keys and or don't know how to control an elevator in a fire situation
#4 They are acting out of the scope of their job description
Does wearing a uniform transform us into something we are not? We tell civilians to vacate and do not return for valuables or anything else for that matter. When does the risk vs reward decision come into play? Do we really need to do another agency's job?
For everyone who gets his/her panties in a bunch over this post get over it! Hold a picture tight of your loved ones everyday and ask yourself one thing. Is this the smartest thing I am about to do?
I will say a prayer for the 2 NYPD members and I hope for a speedy and healthy recovery

While cleaning out some old E-mails I found this press release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 19, 2009
SENATORS SCHUMER AND GILLIBRAND SECURE $1 MILLION FOR MOUNT VERNON TO CONSTRUCT MULTI FUNCTIONAL EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER

Funding Will Renovate Existing Fire Station to Serve as Emergency Operations Center in Mount Vernon
New Operations Center Will Enable Emergency Personnel to Respond to Multiple Disasters Quickly and Effectively
Schumer, Gillibrand Secured Federal Funds As Part Of The 2010 Appropriations Bill
U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced that the full Senate Appropriations Committee has approved the Department of Homeland Security FY10 Appropriations Bill which includes $1 million for Mount Vernon to reconfigure, renovate and construct a Fire Station as the City's Emergency Operations Center. Approval by the Committee is the largest hurdled the funding needs to clear. The bill will now proceed to the Senate Floor as the next step in the appropriations process. Schumer and Gillibrand worked closely with members of the Appropriations Committee to include funding for the project in the 2010 spending bill.
“Residents in Mount Vernon and across Westchester County deserve top-notch emergency services, which is why it’s vital that we provide our emergency personnel with a base of operations from which they can respond to any incident,” said Schumer. “A functioning Emergency Operations Center will streamline emergency response services across the city to make sure that our first responders can act quickly and respond efficiently when we need their help the most.”
“There is nothing more important than the safety of our communities and families,” Senator Gillibrand said. “We need to make sure Mt. Vernon’s first responders are equipped with the right facilities and all the resources they need to do their jobs and keep our families safe when emergencies strike. I will work with Senator Schumer and the entire Congressional Delegation to make sure New York gets its fair share from the federal government.”
Currently, the City of Mount Vernon does not have an Emergency Operations Center for the managing and mitigation of a major accident. During emergency situations, the city can use the Mount Vernon Police Department’s Field Command Center vehicle, but this greatly hampers police operations and the ability to manage a multi agency incident.
The funds that were secured by Senators Schumer and Gillibrand in the 2010 Appropriations Bill will be used to renovate and construct an existing fire station to be used as the city’s Emergency Operation Center. The facility will accommodate emergency personnel throughout the city who will be able to respond to multiple emergencies such as floods, fires and crime. Schumer and Gillibrand noted that utilizing an existing facility within the city is cost effective and a wise investment in the health and safety of Mount Vernon residents.
Now that the appropriations bill has been approved by the full Senate Appropriations Committee, it will be sent to the Senate floor. Following approval by the Senate, the bill will move towards Conference with the House and then to the President for signature

He's not a private citizen, he's a uniformed officer. There's a difference. He's not Joe Shmo the anti-Semite, he's the face of the Fairview Fire Department. No one will remember his name, but they will remember what the FIRE CHIEF said.

I find it very interesting that funding for this new "Executive Deputy Chief" is being requested from the taxpayers to "groom" a new Chief, and now the age discrimination and anti-sematic remarks come out. The only way for Fairview to handle this correctly in this day and age is to ask him to step down so hecan leave and still keep his pension. THAT will send a message. All the problems originate from him from everything I've read, and he's caused the district a lot of trouble, not to mention shining a light on the fire service and racism. Vikki Simmons, the Chairperson of the District, should also step down for her lack of proper and prompt handling of this situation, and being involved in all three incidents.
He is only sorry because he got caught.
It's also funny that the union isn't involved in this, not even a brief statement. They must tolerate this type of behavior of their leadership. Must be in the culture.

It's kind of ironic that Fairview has a LARGE Jewish Community Temple right down the street from Station 2, and the separate Hebrew Hospital Home campus on the other side of the district, which donated their former Rescue 3. Wonder what they think?
I also find it lame that the Chief had to read a letter to apologize while in a face-to-face apology with the Town Supervisor? Really, he couldn't have come up with something more genuine?
Let's also not forget the age-discrimination lawsuit brought against them last week.
Man Sues Fairview Over Age Discrmintation
Or the fact they want to create a new "Executive Assistant Chief" position for $135,000 a year in order to "groom" the Chiefs replacement, one of which is the son of the District's longtime secretary and companion to the late Chief Mauro.

We monitor cyanide during overhaul. During rehab we monitor pulse cooximetry for elevated CO. Assume elevated levels of CO have cyanide present...they are the toxic twins. Cyanokits will be available shortly in Yonkers.

How did this post, originally about a great job done by all, including the rescue of ten people in below freezing temperatures become a diatribe about everything except the job. I was surprised to even see a post about a yonkers fire since the incident alert section has not posted many of our jobs the past few months.
  24. tommyguy liked a post in a topic by Disaster_Guy in Any Alarm Assignment Info from yesteday's Yonkers 4 Alarm Fire?
From my understanding, the bus was requested in order to provide temporary shelter for the evacuated (later displaced) residents of 371 South Broadway (the 4-story/48-unit apartment building next to the fire building). I don't know whether it was OEM, FD, or PD who made the request. Once the Red Cross with OEM set up a Reception Center at a nearby church, the Bee-Line bus was released after a few hours of service and cleared the scene. I'm sure the bus could also have been used for firefighters, but I only saw it being utilized by a dozen or so civilians.
I could be mistaken, so feel free to correct me if that's the case.
  25. Disaster_Guy liked a post in a topic by 61MACKBR1 in Any Alarm Assignment Info from yesteday's Yonkers 4 Alarm Fire?
R1Smokeeater said it exactly as the current dispatching of a Major Alarm Fire in the City of Yonkers is handled. In the case of Thursday's event. all front line YFD apparatus was dispatched to the scene, as part of the 4 alarms. In addition, New Rochelle sent 1 engine (apparently that was the only apparatus that NRFD could send on M/A) and Eastchester sent TL17. Also, Mount Vernon sent 1/1 (Ladder 2 and a Engine Company) and I believe Greenville sent an Engine Company. As R1Smokeeater indicated, based on YFD protocol, in these multi-alarm fires, they (YFD) calls in off duty personnel to man "Reserve Rigs" to take over covering YFD Stations and to allow Mutual Aid Companies to be released from the City. I don't believe that any other city in Westchester County has such a program, where "Reserve Rigs" are available to be manned by Off Duty Personnel. YFD has, as part of their continual upgrading of Front Line Apparatus, has been able to place these former front line rigs into Reserve Status or Spare Status. Yonkers FD having the ability to have 10 Front Line Engine Companies (303, 304, 306, 307, 308, 309, 310, 312, 313, 314), 1 Squad Company (11), 4 Ladder Companies (70, 72, 73, 74), 2 Tower Ladders (71, 75) and a Rescue Company (R1), along with 3 Spare Engine Companies (300, 305, 317), 2 Spare Ladder Companies (76, 78), 1 Spare Tower Ladder (80), 1 Spare Squad (21), and 1 Spare Rescue (R2), ALONG with 3 Reserve Engine Companies (316, 318, 319), 2 Reserve Ladder Compannies (77, 79), and 1 Reserve Tower Ladder (81). YFD also has a various assortment of Special Operations Apparatus/Equipment, that are available dependent upon the needs and requirements of the department.
Many have said that YFD's Reserve and Spare Apparatus Fleet is better than some other cities in Westchester County's Front Line Apparatus.
As it relates to what departments are requested to come to Yonkers to cover as part of Mutual Aid is based upon the list provided to 60 Control and the County. "Recent History" has indicated that New Rochelle, Eastchester, Mount Vernon and Fairview are the first to be called into Yonkers (This is based upon agreements made with those cities fire departments). There has only been a handful of incidents in recent history that other outside departments have come into Yonkers to either cover stations or assist in battling fires. The Bronx River Road job was one that FDNY was asked to come in and assist with (I don't see FDNY manning stations, but I could see FDNY being asked to assist with fighting a fire). White Plains FD, I believe has been asked on a rare occasion to come in and help as part of Mutual Aid.
I believe that Yonkers is on the list to go into New Rochelle to help as part of Mutual Aid. I don't believe (and I maybe incorect) that Yonkers is on the list to go into Mount Vernon as part of Mutual Aid.
Maybe others (people from within YFD) can ellaborate on this more
