The best thing about every diet or exercise plan anyone here and everywhere else will suggest is that they work. Running, lifting weights, crossfit, MMA, walking, eating less, no carbs, all meat, all raw, nothing with a shadow, whatever it is is.
They all have the same fatal flaw. YOU have to stick to it. Do it till you get bored then do something else. Do a bunch of them, or just do one of them. Just do something! Please, do something and get others to join you. Moose and every other member here. None of us are perfect and the sooner you get at it, the easier and more beneficial it is down the road.

After watching footage off the Long Island Brush Fires (Link Bellow), and seeing fire fought with structure PPE, I got few questions... Do any local FD's have wildland PPE? If not, what do you use? Because these fires aren't common, it is my opinion that our area lacks the equipment and training to handle larger scale wildland fires, such as the one in Long Island. Am I right?

Its not all that difficult to make some small changes that will have big impacts on you're health and life in general. Smoking aside, stay away from sugary drinks....for many cutting out soda alone will equate to pounds lost, control you're portion sizes, try and eat a balanced diet w/ fiber, whole grains (i.e. stay away from wonder bread), fruits, veggies and lean protein sources (fish is great, chicken w/o the skin is good too). Space you're meals throughout the day w/ a healthy low-fat snap in between and start reading labels. Also, doing light physical activity like walking is great. You don't need to run 10 miles a day to be fit. Walk a local school track or a favorite trail or road.
I think the biggest thing is that you need to start small and gradually progress. I find as humans many of us tend to want to jump right in and go all or nothing and then we end up giving up a week later. Start w/ adjusting you're diet then maybe add in some light walking and go from there. I'm sure you will be pleased w/ the results. best of luck.

I wasn't sure where to put this topic so feel free to move it to where it belongs.
I felt this needed to be discussed openly with all of our brothers/sisters in a constructive way to hopefully prevent any future LODD's from MI's.
I for one, am extrememly overweight and have a vast family history of heart troubles and it scares me to see all of these firefighters passing from heart related issues, medical issues, or "Unknown" medical issues AFTER the call. How many LODD notices have I read lately with the firefighter passing at the station, or at home some time after the call has ended? How many have passed at the scene or at the station after responding for a call?
We need to step-up our efforts to increase physical fitness in the fire service and prevent each other from dropping with heart attacks and strokes. We need to encourage each other to improve our level of physical fitness, and start eating right.
You see grants being written for firefighting equipment, gear and trucks...but how about gym equipment for the station? It wouldnt take much to get a treadmill or bike, and some free weights at each station, Im even sure there are members out there who have the stuff lying around their homes that could store it at their station for all to use in an effort to keep everyone fit.
I want to loose weight, and I want to be there for my daughter when she graduates school, gets married and has kids of her own but its hard without help and encouragement. What does everyone else say about this issue?
    Stay safe AND healthy.

Just spent good part of almost two hours reading from the first post on. I never forget why our troops are there, and that they are there, and fully support their mission and their efforts to try to eradicate a threat that should never be supported by the people there, but is because, as you mentioned in an earlier post, they have nothing else to fall back on, and without our support they would have no other option but to fall under their rule. Our men and women are working hard to try to give them independence of thought and action, to see there are other means and ways to live their lives rather than as mindless followers of whomever walks in and threatens them into submission, to educate their people, and to help them work together instead of as isolated tribes to make the fledgling thought of democracy and freedom work - it just is harder because many do not have exposure outside their daily form of life, and the only news they get is the Al-Jazeerah and hard-line Islamist bull crap on the radio, so that is what they believe. I have long truly believed that, if the US led the coalition rather than NATO all those earlier years, things would be so very much better and safer in Afghanistan - look how fast (in military/non-civilian day-counting version) progress was made in Iraq once the troops were finally allowed to do the surge with the extra personnel and equipment they had been asking for, but that had been argued against by the people who could approve of it (including a former Illinois Senator now-turned-Commander-In-Chief who finally changed his mind when he really looked at the facts).
Do I and many others believe Pakistan should be turned into a napalm pit? At this point, yes. India has been dealing with them training people to fight their troops in Kashmir since that was separated from India, we know they have been supplying, hiding and providing the foul killers from their safety of their borders, because Pakistan has no control over its vast northern part that breeds these maggots and never will, because it is too fractured and corrupt to even try.
What I have always questioned is this: Is anything being done at all, in any way shape or fashion, to stem the flow of weapons from the money grubbing Chinese and Russians, and sometimes the French (the last two of which built Saddam's 26 palaces after the first Gulf War and provided his stockpiled weaponry with the money the UN was giving to feed his people) into Pakistan, which then gets to Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Morocco, Indonesia, etc.? ANYTHING??? Stop the flow of weapons, and they have nothing to use to intimidate the population, which amazingly has had instances of revolting and killing the Taliban creeps when enough of their innocents get killed. Unfortunately, not often enough, because of that news flow issue.
Enough from me. Thank you for going to work over there in support of our troops, and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you doing their part to try to make a dent in ignorance and destructive actions both there and here - it seems like we only make little dents as individuals, but hopefully some day that wall will fall and people will open their eyes and see this is really a tiny world and we really should start working together to avoid self-destruction. Or something like that. Take care, and be safe.

Came across this story this morning. I think this article puts things back into perspective for those on the homefront. RIP to these dedicated American soldiers

I just want to reinforce this passage as sometimes it seems as if it's forgotten as those at home get caught up in their daily lives
"Americans going on with their day-to-day lives shouldn't forget the troops, Alex Rozanski said.
"We are a nation at war, and men are dying on a regular basis over there," he said. "And people need to remember that."

Preventative maintenance procedures? Simple. My departments were in eastern Kentucky, where everyone is a mechanic.
Tools and equipment and where they're carried? We weren't FDNY with hundreds of firehouses. We had two in a five mile radius at the paid department. The volunteer house had everything under one roof and we were always able to turn out both engines and tankers together.
Knowing how to operate all tools? What do you think we did all day other than wash the trucks and look at women walking by?
Capacities and limitations? I'll put it to you like this. I had better hoped both chiefs went into a coma from the anger stroke they would have suffered had I not known the actual capacities that the engines I was pumping could handle. That was taken care of in our pump operators certification, not drivers certification.
Hoses and fittings are blurry now from both. I remember the Pierce engine and the LaFrance being equipped with two 200 foot sections of 1 3/4 inch crosslays. It's been between six to eight years since I've served with each and I can't accurately recall anymore how much hose was carried in the rear, supply or attack. All I remember now was the Pierce carrying two 1 3/4 inch hand lines, 2 1/2 inch supply and 5 inch supply. The ALF had a 2 1/2 inch line attached to a blitz nozzle, another bed of 2 1/2 inch supply and I believe a 3 inch supply line, with a chassis that was configured as a squad. The Ford had two booster lines in place of cross lays and mirrored the Pierce in the back.
Cab controls, what do you mean? Are you seriously implying I would chauffeur a rig and not know where the turn signals and parking brake are at, or not know how to adjust my mirrors? Our drivers training was more than just jumping behind the wheel and joyriding around town. We had a road course, cone course, familiarization for each vehicle, then pump operators training with each. I wasn't expected to be able to smoothly transition from a 1978 gas engine Ford/Jaco with a 750 gpm pump to a 1996 Pierce with a midship 1250 gpm pump unless I had been trained on both. Same holds true transitioning from a 1962 Pirsch with 1000 gpm pump to a 2005 ALF with midship 1250 pump. The personnel approved to operate Aerial 1 had to complete both pump and ladder operations training since it was a quint and operated as a truck.
Oh yeah I almost forgot, ground ladders on all the engines were the same, 12 foot roof ladder, 24 foot extension ladder and a 10 foot attic ladder. Aerial 1 carried 85 feet worth of ground ladders. I was assigned to the Ford, which was Engine 150, then Rescue 1, so the truck guys knew it better than I did.
Don't forget, things are done differently outside of where ever it is you're from, but it still ends up working the same in the end. On my visits back home to Staten Island and seeing a friend of mine at his north shore company, they were always interested in learning how we operated, instead of offering quick criticism without knowing the full story.

So, by handling it this way, they certified you could what, drive the biggest rig?
How about knowing preventative maintenance procedures, tools and equipment carried, where they are carried, and how to set up and operate all tools? How about knowing capacities and limitations of each rig, OAH &OAL? How about amount and types of hosed carried, fittings, etc? Ground ladder lengths and types? Controls in the cabs, troubleshooting?
Any of this stuff seem important?
Even identical rigs can have something different, depending on what Company has it, and the neihborhoods it serves as first due.

EMTBravo.net has done a great job of keeping its site very user friendly and informative, and an upgrade shortly after I joined made it even better, so we should anticipate great things for the workings of the site and the staff that work so hard to make it so enjoyable and informative. And maybe even more fun/interactive/creatively challenging for all of its contributors who make my visits here a treasure trove of knowledge, sometimes gasps of "Be Nice", and sometimes outright laughs. Cool pictures, articles - who knows what else they can come up with with a software upgrade. Good luck, and thanks.

Thank you for the kind words, sueg. We'll do our best to post info on EMTBravo.com as well.
    UPDATE:
I'm still laying the groundwork for the upgrade. When the upgrade is completed, we will be "under renovation" for a few days. EMTBravo.net may TEMPORARILY not look the same, and some features may not be availble during the upgrade.
We also hope to add some new features that members have been requesting for for a long time.
I'll try to keep everyone up to date via Facebook, Twitter, Email, and EMTBravo.com. We're expecting the progress to take about a week or less.
