The big down side to mergers is a neighborhood can go from having 3 patrol cars to 1 or none depending on the crime going on in the dept they merged with. I rather pay a few bucks more in taxes to keep my town pd

Probably because many members work for paid services which may or may not monitor this website, and those users may or may not intentionally or unintentionally say something their employer doesn't like.

It amazes me that everyone has a hand out looking for more taxpayer dollars for their benefit.
If the construction of the bridge poses such a big risk and requires special resources the state should contract them for the duration of the event. Have the USCG put a boat there. Buying a boat for Tarrytown just passes their burden on to others.

So if a department only has one command vehicle the chief should drive it 20 miles each way to work when they won't respond? I disagree. Leave it for who ever will be command. Plenty of places are forced to share the vehicle because that's what's economically feasable. Too much sense of entitlement for some.

I want to preface this post with the fact that I have been in the fire service for 17 years both Vollie and Career so please don't interpret this as Vollie bashing... I just think the volunteer chief officers have to be a little more conscious about where they bring their District Vehicle.
Yesterday while shopping at the Woodbury Commons with the family I stumbled upon a Chief's vehicle from Jerico, NY. The first thing I thought of was "typical Long Island again", but then I tried to give this guy the benefit of the doubt and say he was probably coming back from Montour Falls (even though no classes ended yesterday).
Whatever the reason was that brought him 90 minutes outside his district....it does nothing for the public perception of the "Extravagant Long Island Fire Departments" to have your vehicle sitting in the Woodbury Commons parking lot.

My department has a policy in place restricting use of chiefs car to no more then 16 miles out of district for non firematic activities, pain in the butt? yes, Necessary? very big yes

Agree to the minimalist approach. Gloves. Map of town. Pen. Phone. Sometimes my knife. Nothing on my belt.
We have bags for our stuff.
All you folks with the loaded belts...how long you been doing this? Heard once that the amount of stuff on ones's belt was inversely proportional to the amount of experience one has.

This is the decision that each man made. They knew what the conditions that they worked under and took the risk.

I agree that this is absurd. But there are other factors to consider. For example, these firefighters know that they were not covered by the city's benefit package. I assume that their families knew, also. Something like 2/3 of the firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers. They also risk their lives, and they not only do not get benefits, they don't even get paid.
When I began my career in law enforcement, I was a reserve deputy sheriff. That means I worked for free and I received no benefits. If I had been killed or permanently injured in the line of duty. my family would have received nothing from the county.
This is the nature of what many of us are willing to accept in order to serve our communities as first responders.
The Prescott Firefighter families have all received large checks from the 100 Club of Arizona. They will receive workman's comp benefits and Surviving Spouse benefits from Social Security. The federal government also has benefits including, as least for police officers so I assume it includes firefighters, college tuition for the children of those killed in the line of duty.
This was not an arbitrary decision by City of Prescott bureaucrats. It's actually party of the city code. It's the law. So, the city officials cannot just ignore it. But I understand that there is a move underway to repeal the law and make it retroactive. We'll see.

Write to Cuomo. Maybe he will pass a new Highway SAFE Act in the dark of night without any review or debate that limits vehicles to 7 miles per hour, reduces highways to one direction (north on even days, south on odd days) to prevent the constant accidents caused by these wrong-way drivers.

Oh wait! They aren't constant and we can't legislate stupid out of the drivers seat.

Maybe it's less clear to some that the way the dispatcher worded it, was in no way instruction. The phrase was "you don't need to do that", basically an acknowledgement that he was following and that it may increase the level of danger. While the difference may seem trivial I submit that it is in fact very distinct and is why there is little to no scrutiny of the dispatchers' role.

I amazed at this question because it always comes up and the majority of people who ask it think that Travon should not have acted differently.. Nothing is wrong with ask who you do not reconize who are you and what are you doing here. Heck I do it all the time. All Travon had to do was ask Zimmerman why he was following him.If he truly felt threatened he could have called 911 or continue running. Instead he decided to come back and attack Zimmerman.

    A few questions for you.
    1) what is an "assault weapon"?
    2) what are all the law abiding citizens who own weapons that have magazines with 10 rounds (or11, 12 or 13) supposed to do with their guns now? Magazines that hold 7 rounds don't exist. This law makes law abiding citizens instant criminals. How does that help?
This legislation is simply feel good political junk. There were laws in place before Newtown. Did the law against THEFT stop Lanza? How about the law against BREAKING AND ENTERING? Oh, and don't we have laws against MURDER? Did any of those laws stop him? NO. Not one.
I don't understand how you think new laws will stop people like him? He obtained the guns illegally. Why do you think restricting me will prevent this from happening again?
