I can't speak for the current condition of Rescue 40, but as GreatPlains588 mentioned, it is 23 years old this year......two years away from officially reaching antique status, and will likely be so before a replacement arrives (assuming said replacement is a custom order).    Lot of places would have retired it years ago.

In other news, an article in the paper the other day says Vails Gate (Orange) is looking to vote on purchasing a new rig.   I assume a replacement for Engine 479?

Will probably be 25 years old when or if new one comes. NFPA reccomends 20 year replacement,.

Got it now!  I definitely misread the RFP thefirst time (I blame a lack of sleep lol).  And I didn't know Cedar St. was NYS property (I learn something new every day!).  Thanks, Barry!

Article in LoHud today about the subject. Very in depth, also spoke to the need to increase staffing in the area.

Assuming that another rig with more staffing was on its way, a rig with two is still better than none.  Establishing continuous water supply, throwing ladders to a known point of entrapment, extended walk around and size-up to the remaining incoming units, among many other activities can be completed by a crew of two and if nothing else, they're geared up and immediately fill out the "two in two out" requirement when the next arriving apparatus marks up.

What is the reason for the change to a rescue engine? We are considering a similar project when our rescue is due for replacement. I was looking for some of their reasoning. Our biggest issue is will it have enough space.

A lot of work went into the new ladder truck purchase in Maywood, including countless hours by the truck committee measuring out setbacks, outrigger measurements, placement along our business district with parked vehicles, etc.   Frankly, considering average manpower is 3-4 guys for the truck to roll, the spec takes into consideration how to do more with less manpower and make it an aggressive piece of apparatus.

Rochelle Park has a KME engine on order as well, pre-construction trip was this past week.   Anticipated delivery end of 2017.
