Moose,
You mentioned OSHA in your post. Is there something that you think your department is doing wrong? in NYS you would have to be looking out for PESH (NY OSHA). They also don't normally respond to complaints from the public just an FYI.

Somers VFD Engine 180 relocated to Oceanside FD In Nassau County. One of the chief's wrote a great article about it and took some amazing photos.. http://www.somersvfd...w.cfm?News_ID=7
Stay Safe!
The guys at Salamander in Oceanside are a great group of guys and they are doing a great job dealing with what they were dealt with. It was a pleasure helping them out.

Judge Garufis then gets a hold of the case and orders "rolling meat-outs" citywide. Companies will be required to give up meat on certain days. OOPS... it wasn't Garufis, it was the Pope that ordered that one.
Don't joke... LA will hear you

I'm not going to put my people at risk to try and save something the insurance company will probably write off and knock down within a week.
Best line in that paragraph.. remember its only a building it can't make up for the missed holidays and memories with your families!!

I believe that I read somewhere that FEMA has camps set up in NJ? Its a terrible situation. I have been down in LI for work for about the past two weeks and I really feel for the people down here many who lost everything.

The problem I have with this is who has manpower to lend out? Especially on the volunteer side? VFD have been hurting for manpower and members for a long time now and its only getting worse... can we really afford to lend bodies to a commercial company? Could those members be used in another capacity?

I think some of you are blowing this out of proportion... In these kind of operations there is a lot of waiting around for assignments, supplies etc. to begin with. I am sure that they weren't busy 100% of the time to take a few pictures. Maybe these pictures were taken after they had been relieved and de-moblized to return home? How do you know without actually being there?
Pride is a big factor here also.. remember that these guys who went down there gave up their time missed work, family time, etc. to go help their brothers in need... Remember that word brotherhood? So what if they wanted to take a few pictures to remember it?
Public Relations is a big thing these days as I am sure all of you know... We all have websites and local newspapers, in this modern age PR is a big issue that departments should be looking at. Even volunteer departments have to think about it. When that big vote for the new engine comes up to replace your 25 Y/o rig where are the citizens going to look for information about you? The first place they will check is your website. Why not have as many positive things on there as possible, why not show them that you go above and beyond to provide a valuable service to them and are capable? PR can go along way in todays world.....
Just some quick thoughts that I had on the matter.

I saw the engine from Ardsley today when I was down there... what firehouse were they out of?

My point is that regardless of your religious beliefs, you should not be able to be "exempt" from OSHA standards regarding SCBA.
They aren't exempted.... they should be held accountable under respiratory standard if they are in an IDLH but we all know it comes down to politics.....

Well thats no bueno... From what I've been seeing they are expecting a Northern NJ or NYC landfall point for the hurricane/blizzard thingy

RIP Charlie.. Just from the short time I knew you and the comments that are posted here I know you will be missed greatly!! Truly a heavy loss for the emergency services community

Why is this only becoming an issue now? Am I missing something? This NFPA standard has been around for awhile

@16fire - - I love my F4. Ive trained on it a number of times and its just so simple to use. 1 Handed operation is great. I feel way more comfortable with a free hand coming out the window. No more having to lock of the rope system with a hand against the wall so i can focus on keeping the anchor in place on my way out the window.
As for not being able to hide 50ft of rope, your right, theres no way to go about hiding it completely. I dont know much about it and maybe JM15 from Somers FD can elaborate, but if my memory serves me correctly they have a system built into their SCBA's which keeps the entire PES out of the way until you need it.
Elaboration Mackey?
We got rid of that system do to complaints from members... We had the Scott pack integrated one. In theory it worked great BUT you only had your Scott pack waist strap keeping you in the system ( No leg straps or harness)... not very comfortable when going out a window and hanging, we had multiple members who couldn't even finish their required jumps due to the literal pain in the ribs it was giving them. That system used thin webbing which we have kept and moved to our gear pocket and that seems to work out great. One advantage to the webbing is how thin it is... you can really pack it in there with minimal bulk. We are now currently using the Gemtor Harness with the RIT system with the thin webbing in our right pocket.
Edit: Some pros of the Integrated system were easy maintenance, and the lower cost since we only had to purchase systems for each pack not member.
This is the system you are talking about... I heard another local department was looking at it... http://www.ritrescuesystems.com/product_detail.php?id=10

If I recall correctly, wasn't there a "Firehouse Grill" off of Rt 100 in Somers? (By Bria) It was next to the Mexican Shack, and has recently closed it's doors.. Is there any connection?
Firehouse deli and it is now closed. No relation I believe.

In its heyday, this seemingly luxurious estate in Gretna, Neb., was described as the "finest mansion in all of Sarpy County." But soon it will be burned to the ground, set on fire room-by-room as part of firefighter training for the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department, the Omaha World-Herald reported.
The 14,000-square-foot palace was built in 1997 by former Buffalo Bills safety Rod Kush, who also owned a chain of small-furniture stores. But he sold the home 10 years later after financial troubles hit. The mansion changed hands a couple of times until a developer snapped it up for only $612,000 in 2010.

I will never forget, November 12, 2002, while watching 3rd Watch, my wife went into labor with out firstborn.
THAT was a great show!
You wait and watch the rest of the episode?

Any other thoughts on these systems? Are most of the Depts. out there getting them?
You should have at least done a "hazard assesment" to determine if a system is needed for your jurisdiction as is required by law. If you have any buildings higher than two stories than you should have a "system" as your members are at risk for entrapment according to the wording.
