Sssshhh...it really is EFD's Rescue 5 making a comeback. At the last minute they're going to switch out the door decals. But at the apparatus show, who's going to bother looking at a new Rescue if it says Eastchester on the doors?
Here's how the conversation would go..
FF1 (name is Chester): "Woo wee...that sure is a pretty Rescue Vinny..."
FF2 (name is Vinny): "Chester, Eastchester..Where the hell is that?"
    FF1: "It's up in Westchester."
FF2: "Run that by me one more time Chester..."
FF1: "It's only a few miles south of Port Chester.."
FF2: "And that's in Westchester Chester?"
FF1: "Yes. Port Chester and Eastchester are in Westchester."
FF2: "Where is the beer concession Chester?"
    FF1: "THIRD BASE!"

This style was orginally designed for PD use. Many PD's use these in their traffic enforcement cars, to blend in with other traffic, and the ghost lettering is good at night when hunting DWI drivers. Mostly all the ghost lettering PD car's don't have lightbars, either. AND, they 99% of the time don't respond Code 3.
I don't see the rationale on putting them on Chief's cars. Would this be appropropriate to do on fire apparatus as well? No.
Why wouldn't you want your vehicle identified easily? Why would you want to LOWER your daytime visibilty?
I really don't understand this concept.

ALERTS TERROR THREATS IN 2011 EUROPE
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross."
The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out.
Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.
The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's Get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.
The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was
precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.
Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."
The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far, no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

No wonder firefighter savoid it at all costs....onceyou get there, you are stripped of you pack, coat, etc...people use equipment they usually dont know how to use, and then you are STUCK there because "they say so"...even though they read your blood pressure wrong! There is a reason they call it EMS Prison.
Save the money for water and Gatorade...hand me one while I change my bottle, then get out of the way and let the firemen DO THEIR JOBS.

  10. JM15 liked a post in a topic by JohnnyOV in Training requirements & how do you mandate them
On a calmer attitude. Why wouldn't you want to hold yourself to the same training standards as your career counterparts? Or even to a higher standard then that? Just because the laws state 10 hours OSHA training this and 30 hours that doesn't mean its the right thing to do. OSHA itself is the BARE minimum regulations to follow for any organization. Most companies (large scale) try and exceed all aspects of the OSHA laws. Why? because they can apply for VPP (voluntary protection program) that basically tells OSHA, look, we don't need to audit these guys as much because we hold ourselves to a higher standard.
All I'm trying to say is I personally don't like being looked down upon for lack of anything, and I try and help others achieve what levels they are completely capable of achieving, whether they know it or not. I really feel that even though your State Law says one thing, there is nothing wrong with following that but being an over achiever, and going above and beyond what the state says.
  11. JM15 liked a post in a topic by JohnnyOV in Flashpoint: Union stand on volunteers doesn't hold water
While your argument seems valid on the front, many communities simply cannot afford to supply their taxpayers with a fully career staff 24 hours a day. Would I like to see every community staffed 24/7 by a fully paid department with 4 guys on every piece of equipment that they have, absolutely. Nothing would make me happier to know that when I am sleeping or away at work, that there would be an arsenal of personnel ready to respond to my home is something terrible would happen. But you and I know that this is an impossible task, and many communities would be in uproar over the raise in taxes. Fortunatly in my community, we have the not just the manpower, but the knowledge base and experience during the day and at night to ensure this protection. While the response may be a little slower since we are not living in the firehouse, it is something that our communtity has not voiced concern about, and actually embraces the idea of the volunteer firefighter. Many communities however do not have the volunteer base, and nothing makes me more upset as a volunteer, then to listen to certain departments get toned out 2, 3 times for an alarm. When you have a consistent problem, deal with it. It is time to put your big boy pants on and actually admit to the community you can no longer provide a response that will satisfy the needs of the community. If it requires hiring career staff, so be it. End rant.
As for a professional response, Career departments have their good apples and bad eggs that give everyone a bad name, as do all volunteer departments. The topic of "professionalism" is the fire service has been beaten to death on this forum, and honestly I could care less if you call me professional, a volly scab, or any other term you want to throw at me, good or bad. But I know when I get in the truck, and respond to someone's house or business, I do so, and expect everyone else in my department to do so in a manner that will not leave the homeowner with a bad taste of the fire service in their mouth, while maintaining that every individual is gear up, with proper assignments so that if we do turn the corner and their is a working fire, no one is acting like they're about to lose their virginity . To do any less would be a complete disservice to the community you are supposed to be serving. End Soapbox.

    Captain,
I am not going to argue about the lack of standards in NYS for becoming a ff, an officer or Chief. But their are some Dept's that have worked hard, and have pretty high standards to meet in order to become a ff, an officer and chief. So please do not say you need to get voted in period. It is unfair to those Dept's that have set requirements for all classes of ff's, and meet them on a yearly basis.

I'll combine a whole bunch of quoted posts into one, and just use yours to go off of...
This wasn't us taking a personal attack via the bartender who had it out for cops and firemen who died that day. Yes, 343 firemen died that day, along with 23 NYPD officers, 37 PAPD officers 15 EMTs, and 3 court officers, It is not just about preserving their memory though, it is about the 79 passangers and 11 crew members on AA flight 11, 51 passangers and 9 crew members on UA flight 175, 53 passengers and 6 crew members on AA flight 77, the 33 passengers and 7 crew members on UA flight 93. Its about the 2185 lost in the towers and the 125 in the pentagon.
I was not involved in emergency services when the attack happened, and regardless of whether or not I was now, I would have reacted the exact same. To me and the rest of the guys there, it wasn't about the cop comment, or the rag on taxes, or using the tower as an airport. It was an individual attempting to making fun of a tragedy that occurred in our country that took thousands of lives, ruined thousands more, and continues to ruin even more every day, especially the year of its 10th anniversary. All we wanted to do was stick up for the thousands of individuals who can no longer stick up for themselves, and we feel as if we've accomplished that. Should the "jokes" have ever happened, hey its their bar and they can say what they want, but now to know that the employees have be reprimanded for their actions by the owner, and they truly feel sorry for what was said, we feel like some good has come out of this.

4 blocks away from the fire, so deductive reasoning lets me assume that this is the correct department.
    ______
Being that there are full time employees with this department, as well as this article ( http://www.uvaldelea...1cc4c002e0.html ) listing them at the local country club for an awards banquet, I highly doubt that funding was an issue for a lack of turnout gear. In fact, there are pictures of turnout gear in the gear bags on the front lawn of the building.
It is unfortunate that this is occurring at this day in age in the fire service in America. I feel that someone needs to sit this chief down and just straight out ask him in a non threatening manor, 'What the hell is going on?" I'm sure that the negative press that this video is getting among the country's departments, will well alone be enough to make the department face it's embarrassment without need for outside questioning of their tactics. Who knows, maybe this video will be the best thing that happens to this department, their chief and officers get on everyone's rear end, and completely turn the department around 180 degrees. Unfortunately, sometimes you need something like this negative event to get people's rear in gear.
All I can say is that I wish Uvalde Fire Department the best of luck of trying to fix their problems, and that there is a wide world of knowledge out there for them to ask for help if they so choose. There is no shame in asking for assistance when you really need it most.

It is with regret to announce the passing of Josephine Harris. Josephine was confined to a wheel chair trapped on the upper floors of one of the Towers on 9/11. The FDNY Members of Ladder 6 were coming down the many flights of stairs when they came upon Josephine who was unable to go down those stairs. As the members of Ladder 6 approached her, she said for them to leave her, and just save themselves. Of course the members of Ladder 6 did NOT do that. Instead they all took turns carrying her down the many flights of stairs. Then with only a few more flights to go, the entire 110 Story Tower came down on them. Trapping Josephine and those Ladder 6 Members. Later they were all rescued and of course Josephine was very Thankful to those FDNY Members.
The History Channel did a story on those FDNY Members and Josephine, along with a few others that survived that day. That story is called "Countdown to Ground Zero". It is now on DVD featuring Josephines story. She was certainly a hero that day and offered herself to stay back for the safety of others.
May you Rest in Peace Josephine Harris. You were a Hero as far as I am concerned, along with those Firefighters from Ladder 6 who carried you down those many flights of stairs to safety.

While we tend to embrace those that climb the ranks from bottom to top, very often a supervisor in almost any field, does not have to know everything about every facet of the field. In many Fire/EMS systems officers with lesser license levels command paramedics with no operational or supervisory issues. If an EMT cannot supervise a medic. the problem is his/her supervisory skills. Are all chief's Haz-mat tech's? How many worked in special operations? Yet they somehow can command an incident where resources area working that may have more expertise in certain areas. The same is true of EMS. If your EMT officers over step their bounds by going against a medics' patient care advice or direction, the issue is with the supervisory skill set and attitude.

We received a post- arrest the other night in the local ER. She (a dialysis pt who missed her rx due to the winter storm) called 911 saying she couldn't breathe and "was probably having a heart attack." 2 minutes later PD broke down her door and found her asystolic-- started CPR. 2 more minutes later ALS arrived and loaded a few rounds of Epi and Atropine into her. Got a pulse. Gave 1 more of Epi and 1 more of Atropine. Scrambled her to me in the local ER with a pulse of 40 (mostly ectopic, med-based beats). We immediatley began the hypothermia protocol (AKA Code Cool).
    Fast forward: 2 days.
She was warmed back up in our ICU from 93 degrees to 98 degrees and was extubated the day after. 2 days later she was extubated and asked ME, the one who received her and wrote her off as non-viable, ""What the Hell was I thinking bothering you people with my medical problems??? I'm so sorry I bothered you all!"
WE broke her ribs, tore her lip tubing her, and jammed lines and tubes all over the place in her tiny body, and she's apologizing to ME. This is why I do this. Beyond words. Seriously. There's so rarely a save post-arrest, and if the person survives, he/she rarely comes out of it as much more than a plant on a window sill. And she thanked ME.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, all. NEVER forget why you do what you do and NEVER assume your efforts are fruitless. This woman was proof to me to always the assume the outcome is going to be a GOOD ONE.
