They should start by raising the Standards! Stop hiring so many knuckleheads! Now there's a brilliant idea!

I was being sarcastic about the going from firefighter to Commissioner part.

Ridiculous! I've heard him talk before and he really doesn't seem all that put together. Maybe I'm just used to seeing how the FDNY has been doing things lately but shouldn't they put somebody in that role who has more command experience, not just some union guy because he's good with the guys. That role is about leadership and bringing a department to the next level.

Don't forget in the 70's Mount Vernon had a good size volly force in addition to the paid force..

The bucket looks great for for master stream operations... all that room and two nozzles... Yuck! I wouldn't want to be the fireman during rescue operations and having to bail out in a hurry... you have about two linear feet of platform to jump on each side of the nozzles. How often do you expect the bucket to be 90 degrees to the structure? That makes it even more challenging. It would be nice to have angled corners because you are rarely perpendicular to the structure and at least 8" of foot hold on three sides of the bucket so you have something to step on under poor conditions. I don't even see any easy acting handles to open the bucket doors.
Pierce makes great apparatus, but their bucket to me isn't very desirable.

How is that possible? Do they only have one person on duty? Sounds like a failure to me.
Where's the County EMS Coordinator or State EMS Bureau of any other responsible party in this?

This is all the time. It's a shame the people of Sleepy Hollow do not get the care that they should get. Tarrytown VAC is up there all the time. They should get shut down at best.Peoples lives our on the line.

I believe the hydrant was out of service. When Pelham Engine 5 arrived on scene they hit a hydrant 1/2 block away rather than that hydrant.

Here's what I heard on the radio:
60 Control repeatedly asking 73-B-2, Sleepy Hollow Ambulance their status, 73-B-2 repeatedly advising awaiting an EMT, an obviously and rightfully frustrated 60 Control dispatcher advising them they are at the 30 minute mark, 73-B-2 still not responding or requesting mutual aid. 5 minutes later, 73-B-2 advised 60 Control per Sleepy Hollow PD, they (Sleepy Hollow PD) are going to be requesting mutual aid, they are going back into quarters. 27 minutes later, Irvington 64-B-2 is on scene. So about an hour for an ambulance to arrive.
What happened there? Maybe I missed the call type. Probably just simply a poorly trained or ignorant member? Why did 73-B-2 wait so long that the PD had to directly request mutual aid? Does a 60 Control dispatcher have authority to override a unit? I would guess no because this dispatcher obviously given his tone would have done so. Sleepy Hollow PD got to override them directly thankfully. 35 minutes 73-B-2 waited for an EMT before they were told to stand down.

Engine 119 has had recurring issues with the pump (believed to be the Pro-S Governor) as well as the ball valves from Akron Brass since it was built (the plastic ball valves don't like the water we get from our hydrants and static water sources). "Band-aid" repairs have been made to these issues over and over again for several years. Requests from our department to replace these components were put off repeatedly.
In August, we went out on a run one night and noticed the water tank was empty. When we refilled it, we noticed it was leaking. This prompted the rig to go out for repairs to the tank, as well as the above mentioned issues. Also being addressed was a "wish list" of items we had been asking for well over a year.
Currently, it is at Excelsior where they are just about done making all of the repairs. The Poly-Tank guys - as it's been reported to us - did not want to honor the warranty on the tank, and even suggested we just "carry less water" to reduce how much leaks out of it. This delayed progress several weeks.
Replacing the pump controller has required more work then anticipated, also delaying the process.
I'll refrain from my personal thoughts on the entire debacle and who I lay the blame on here, as it isn't the place to do it. I thank Excelsior for their efforts and time, I know it's got to be frustrating dealing with the work itself, us, and the other parties involved.
I'd also like to thank the other two Engine Companies in Croton that have been picking up our usual first and second due runs. Our entire company appreciates it.
Lastly, I give my appreciation to the members of our company that have been dealing with the misery that comes from not having our own apparatus, and "making due" using Tanker 10 and Utility 14 where we normally would be running E119.
If anyone has any other questions or comments, feel free to email me at jmunson@crotonfd.org.
    Thanks.

Used to be Mohegan Engine 256 or Engine 257. Our own Howard Peiffer , former LMFD and former Palm Coast Chief has been with it since it was born and they moved to Florida together lol.
Not only did it get saved from the scrap heap, but here's the best part.....it's coming back to Lake Mohegan!
I love this style of Ward LaFrance, growing up Hartsdale and Fairview they had them and saw them all the time, and love the look of the cab.
I'm so happy it's getting saved plus going back to it's original home. I wish I could have bought Hartsdale's. These rigs are also a part of New York state history, as they were built in Elmira, NY.

Or you could dispatch a Tarrytown Ladder that isn't far away and has an extra ladder to cover the village. Just because you want to stick "close by", doesn't mean your doing a better service. You might be actually doing a disservice to that jurisdiction, as in Montrose. Why would you take away their ladder that's covering their district when you have two ladders just 10 minutes away to the south. What it seems like is that there is still either this buddy buddy system when it comes to calling mutual aid or people haven't really taken into consideration what units are where and how it would actually affect that community. Distance does play a part for sure, but no reason in depleting a department's resources and then leaving them bone dry for them to catch a working fire. And trust me, no matter what, you will always get guys to staff a mutual aid call because everybody wants to lend a hand.

I'm on the fence with this one. As mentioned, reception for pagers and cell phones can be limited to say the least. There are times when I receive a fire call text late or not at all. So there have been instances where the house siren has alerted me that there is a call.
I can remember while dispatching for a fire district, I failed to sound the house siren for whatever reason. I had a member key up the department Nextel to ask me why I hadnt set off the siren. When I asked him how he knew there was a call, he replied "because my pager went off" lol.
I know many agencies have certain rules/guidelines regarding house siren use (type of alarm, time of day, etc). I can certainly agree with that.
I for one don't see the need for 6, 7, 8 rounds of a house siren. Perhaps 3 would be suffice?
