Yes, I notice it as well. There are so many kin fact that it more or less diminishes the relevance of all causes. Everybody seems to want recognition these days and many are not shy about accepting the gratitude and attention. I am a retired fire officer as well as a Veteran and am proud of both, but I do not feel a need to tell it to the world and to be treated as a hero simply because I rescued a person or fought in a war. We call too many people heroes these days and those of us who have been around a little know that putting on a uniform and doing a job well does not make us heroic. There are true heroes among us, such as those who perform extraordinary acts of bravery or perform selfless acts to help others. Jumping on a live grenade or performing a rescue against all odds of coming out alive are two examples. In my final years of service,I noticed that way too many of us were more than willing to take a bow to a gracious public just for going to work each day. Let's reassess a little and back off and save the accolades for those among us who deserve it. Memorial Day is one holiday that should stand apart from some of the others that have popped up over the years to celebrate things that no one cares about. We should all care about our freedom and therefore make this day stand out fromthe others. Remember that we do not celebrate Memorial Day----------We observe it!!

PS My aunt is doing much better, she's awake and alert. Her color has returned and most of her vitals are good. She's still on a ventilator in the Trauma ICU, but she's definitely doing a lot better than she was yesterday.

It is with great sadness that I announce that a good friend, Rob Arons passed away today (Sunday, 4/21).
Rob was a volunteer Ex-Chief with Fairview FD and he previously worked at 60 Control as Operator 611.
Rob "retired" from 60 so he could move to Florida, where he then worked as a dispatcher for Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue.
One of Rob's friends said it all when he wrote:
    R.I.P. "Bubby"

Rob was one of the good guys in both the fire service and in life. Never a bad word about anyone. He will be missed by all. It was sad to see him leave Westchester, it was Florida's gain. Does anyone have more info or sites to visit? RIP Rob!

i should have said this in my first post, but losing Chucky is striking me pretty hard. I had the privilege of being Chucky's partner for a few years on Tuesday overnight working Medic 37 prior to my deployment to Afghanistan. He was schedule to be my partner on Tuesday Medic 31 when he came back from his injury, but they were having a tough time nailing down what was actually hurting him. This is a devastating blow to not only Empress but to all of Westchester County emergency services. He was extremely involved in both EMS as well as the volunteer fire dept. I think being Chucky's partner made me a better paramedic and I sorely miss him. He always had our backs and was the best of the best. I can always remember trading story's of his PortChester jobs vs my Pearl River Jobs, nothing was ever too small for him to give his expert opinion, and he always did have the better way to do it. I wish I told him more how much I truly valued his partnership on the ambulance, as well as his friendship. While I was deployed he always made sure to check in on my wife, and include her in the Perry Ave party's he had, or just going out to the bars. I could go on forever, about him, and i could make a list a hundred miles long of things i would give up, or change just to have him back for one more second. Please keep him and his family in your prayers and hearts cause right now he's up there teaching God how to buff the big ones.
we lost one of the good ones today.
RIP my partner, my friend, and most of all my brother. Love you guy

This incident reminded me of a guy I used to work with occasionally, a water service tech. He belonged to one of these groups. He was in his 30s married with two kids. He was a pretty solid guy but he liked to ride motorcycles and ride them fast.
He lived and rode with a group in northern New Jersey. I recall him telling me one of the rides they used to take was on Sunday mornings, down the New Jersey Turnpike. They'd get on the pike around Teaneck Road and ride down to Cherry Hill New Jersey, just east of Philadelphia. They used to make it in an incredibly short time, way less than an hour. He told they used to average 85 mph and do 100 mph over long stretches. In a group of probably thirty or forty bikes. All of the guys were working guys, married with kids, probably all 30-40 years old.
I told him in a nice way that I thought he was nuts. That they were endangering every other motorist on the highway, to say nothing of the danger they exposed themselves to. He used to laugh. He knew I was right but he loved to ride the bike fast. It was like he was addicted to it.
In all other ways he was a reasonable guy, he was a good guy to work with too. But he just didn't get it.
Most of all I used to wonder what would happen if the NJSP went after them. I would presume the troopers were going to be pretty unhappy, and well they should be. I was also pretty sure his group would probably be confrontational. He had this idea in his head that forcing his group to obey the speed limits was like taking some of their freedom away. He just didn't see how nonsensical that was.
