If you’ve been at the scene of a building on fire, then it’s likely you’ve witnessed firefighters just standing around. Why is that? Inside the yellow tape, firefighters perform all sorts of coordinated tasks from trying to put out the fire, to climbing on the roof and cutting a hole to allow hot gases to escape, to searching for victims, all working to achieve the same goal: rescue people and save property from being destroyed by fire. The rescue of civilians is the highest priority, with all strategies supporting that one objective. But sometimes, those outside the yellow tape might encounter a strange sight: A group of firefighters just standing around.

State Sen. Terrance Murphy might have the answer to stop drivers from texting and snapping photos while driving, causing hundreds of deaths each year, including that of Evan Lieberman, a New Castle teen who lost his life due to a distracted driving accident in Westchester County.

Murphy, who represents much of Northern Westchester and parts of Putnam County, has introduced legislation that, much like instances of drunk driving and the use of a Breathalyzer, would provide police officers with a Textalyzer to use in order to determine if distracted driving was the cause of a motor vehicle crash.

.The response of the FDNY small boat to Rye illustrates what some think is one of the great weaknesses in Westchester fire protection is along the Sound Shore where fire fighting capabilities are shaky to .non existent. From the Bronx line to Connecticut there are billions of dollars of boats, marine facilities and shore front properties yet there is little meaningful  fire protection.

Agreed! Does Rye, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, or New Rochelle have a fire boat? And does County PD have a boat in the water and quickly staffed like they do on the Hudson?

Information on Port Chester volunteer firefighters proves elusive

PORT CHESTER - Nearly a year after the village cut all eight of its paid firefighters, officials finally released documentation that drove that controversial decision — kind of.

The settlement guarantees that paid fire crews maintain four men on each engine that goes out on a call for the next five years

LONG BEACH, N.Y. — Long Beach officials and the city’s paid firefighters have reached a settlement to avoid layoffs in order to move forward with a restructuring plan that includes paid paramedics and volunteers.

The Long Beach Professional Firefighters union, representing the paid firefighters, agreed to drop two of its lawsuits against the city, which planned to overhaul the fire department, in exchange for granting job protection for the existing 18 paid firefighters.

YONKERS - A fire is tearing through the historic former Alexander Smith carpet factory at the corner of Nepperhan and Lake avenues in Yonkers this morning.
Mayor Mike Spano said the fire was reported around 4 a.m. and is a general alarm, meaning every firefighter on duty in the city at the time is at the scene.
Spano said the building is now home to the YOHO artists community, mainly for artists' lofts and other businesses. He said he does not believe anyone resides in the building.
The carpet mill buildings date to the late 19th century and produced carpeting until 1954.

The most interesting videos from yesterday’s (Wednesday) 5-alarm fire that destroyed a furniture store in Hudson County, New Jersey may be the ones that show the effort to get North Hudson Ladder Company 1 out of the line of fire. The aerial ladder was up when smoke quickly intensified, pouring out of the storefront where the large display windows had been removed minutes earlier by firefighters. -statter911.com

The NYPD will have to post its full patrol guide online under legislation passed by the City Council Thursday.

The guide — which contains a slew of rules and procedures for cops to follow on everything from conducting a stop and frisk to handcuffing students at school or responding to a bicycle crash — will also have to be publicly updated within 24 hours whenever the department makes a change.

“There is no reason for secrecy,” said Councilman Dan Garodnick (D-Manhattan), who sponsored the measure. “New Yorkers will be able to know what to expect in interactions with officers and will be better equipped to speak out if a procedure is not followed. And for the officers themselves they will not be unfairly criticized for doing in many cases what they are taught and trained to do.”
