In March, Hartsdale community activist Mona Fraitag posed what she thought was a simple question. How did the volunteer Hartsdale Fire Co. spend $17,000 it has received in 2015 from a New York tax on home insurance policies?

    OSWEGO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)

The Oswego City Council voted Monday night 7-0 to pass the 2017 budget and eliminate 15 firefighter positions and one police lieutenant.

The vote came following a public hearing on the status of the city’s budget.

Tonight, the board majority of the Arlington Fire District directed Chief Tory Gallante to have American flags removed from two fire trucks. Gallante says that there was no official vote taken, but three board members were in favor of removing the flags, two were not.

On background: Gallante says the union asked him recently if they could display American flags on the rear of two fire trucks. Gallante granted them permission to do so, as long as the flags were properly and safely secured. The union purchased the flags.

Gallante declined to comment on specifics of why the board majority directed the removal of the flags but said he is “very disappointed with their direction.”

I will be reaching out to board members tomorrow to get their views on this.

COLONIE NY -- With an all-volunteer force, you might expect Colonie's firefighting to be a low-cost operation.

    You'd be wrong.

Colonie spends $8.8 million, more than the city of Schenectady's full-time paid force of firefighters. And the Capital Region suburb has more fire vehicles than the cities of Albany, Schenectady and Troy combined, a Times Union investigation has found.

    SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) --

After an historic 138-year run, the San Bernardino City Fire Department is disbanding, with the county fire department taking over at the end of the week.

"This tugs at me to have had to make this decision," said San Bernardino Mayor Carey Davis.

The transition will save the city of San Bernardino close to $8 million per year.

FDNY’s low dropout rate raises questions about rigor of training

The FDNY’s latest graduating class of 310 probationary firefighters had the lowest drop-out rate in years, but some question whether the training was watered down.

An alarming 47,000 American overdose deaths in 2014 — 60 percent from heroin and related painkillers like fentanyl — has pushed elected leaders from coast to coast to consider what was once unthinkable: government-sanctioned sites where users can shoot up under the supervision of a doctor or nurse who can administer an antidote if necessary.

Out of the gate, I asked my students directly why they tolerated unfit, often obese, police and firemen at their departments.

Many excuses came back including poor examples at the command level (i.e. unfit, “legacy” police and fire chiefs), union resistance, not wanting to create a “hostile” work environment for members, and “career suicide.”

SUBJECT:      Update to Firefighter 1 and Basic Exterior Firefighter Training Programs

In January 2015, the Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) released the newest edition of the Firefighter 1 and Basic Exterior Firefighter curriculums.  Since that time, this office has received numerous comments and communications relating to these new programs.

In an effort to assure that our programs continue to be of the highest quality and meet the needs of New York’s firefighters, OFPC reassembled the stakeholder’s curriculum work group, made up of OFPC members and representatives from statewide organizations, that was used to develop the original curriculum to review the feedback and make recommendations that will further enhance the program.

Based on their recommendations, a separate group has worked to improve both the curriculum and the delivery system.  As a result of their work, the program’s delivery principles were modified extensively.  This modified program has been finalized and deliveries under this new format are slated to begin September 1, 2016.

Fire Departments and Fire Service Organizations can learn about the important changes being made to the program, by going to our website: http://www.dhses.ny.gov/ofpc/training/videos/firefighter-1.cfmThe narrated power point presentation will take you through the new program.

OFPC members are also available for live presentations or to answer questions.  If interested, contact John Gilmore, Chief of Fire Operations and Training at 518-474-6746 or john.gilmore@dhses.ny.gov.

Many thanks go out to the members of the NYS Fire Coordinator’s Association, Firemen’s Association of the State of New York, New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, New York State Association of Fire Districts, NYS Department of Labor, and those State Fire Instructors who served as members of the stakeholders working group.  Their input has been invaluable to creating what we believe are positive changes that will not only benefit all students who attend the program, but as importantly, produce effectively trained firefighters.

The FDNY is hoping to improve response times to critical 911 calls in the Bronx by having EMTs take over hazardous material duties from paramedics, the Daily News has learned.

Two paramedic units trained in counterterrorism measures — hazardous material and tactical response techniques known as HazTac — are being relieved of those responsibilities to focus solely on urgent medical calls, the department said Friday.

Attention residents of Greenwich, we need your help!

For the last 2 years the First Selectman and Fire Chief have attempted to add firefighters to improve the unsafe staffing levels of the Fire Department. Currently Old Greenwich, Cos Cob, and Byram only have two career firefighters assigned while Central, Glenville, and North St have 4 career firefighters. This staffing model leaves large portions of the community deficient in fire protection.

The First Selectman and Fire C...hief once again attempted to increase the staffing of the undermanned companies and once again it is about to be removed from the budget by the Board of Estimate and Taxation. The sole reason for the increase in staffing is to improve the safety of the firefighters and the residents in the Town of Greenwich.

There will be a public hearing on the budget tomorrow, March 17th at 7pm at Town Hall. Please come and support the First Selectman and the firefighters. If you cannot attend the public hearing you can contact your BET representatives and voice your support.

    Thank You!!
