All those people in the area are gonna have heart attacks when the tax bill come in and the Plants contribution is not there. Nice when your tax bill quadruples cause the plant which kicked a lot of cash into the area is gone.

Power plant being built in middletown (orange county) and another in Dover (dutchess). still not enough to offset the closing of Indian Pt.

Cuomo talks about getting (aka buying) power from "our friends up north" (Canada) Maybe I'm wrong, but here we are, supposedly dependent on foreign oil, now he wants us to be dependent on foreign electricity. He's worse than his father, who sold the state down the river.

New York didn't have the money to send tax refunds out on time...where in the hell will they get the money for free college?Maybe higher taxes for those who WORK  instead of living off the public dole....let those butt holes worry about 2017 and not a run in 2020...God save the USA.....
P.S....I would love to see Indian Point closed, come up with an alternative source of power and we'll talk...

Especially now that departments are much more certification / classroom dependent, I think giving easy tests are actually not doing the recruits any favors in that the test does nothing to prepare them for the academy. Like it or not there will be a final exam and that one (at least in theory) is going to be based on knowledge that is learned and applied.

The reason for the residency credit is pretty simple.  It gives the NYC residents a "small" edge over the out of towners.

I suspect that historically the non-resident applicant pool is predominantly white & male.  The city is trying to inject diversity into the department.  The city has a large non-white population and a lot of females.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out.

You can still be picked by another town or village. If NYC don't pick you, you have to wait till next test. Also those aren't "points", if you score a 90, you don;t go to 95 on the county list. You are most likely competing with other people in your town. your score is compared against them. Your not getting a advantage.

"Viper" thank you for keeping us updated on this latest ruling. Of course it will be interesting to see what the opposing side has to say about it. As they claim that their side of the story was not heard by the state authorities.

The laid off Port Chester Firefighters have already been eliminated without any state hearing at all. Both sides of the story should have been told BEFORE any action was taken regarding those Port Chester Firefighters. It is similar to being sentenced to prison BEFORE having any legal hearing.

It is my hope that should that be proven to be the case, those eight former Port Chester Firefighters seek justice for unfair treatment and unjust cause. They should seek their former positions back if requested, along with ALL back pay and benefits as well. A counter suit should also be filed for being subject to a hostile environment and harassment.

The citizens as well should be made fully aware through the media should those Port Chester Firefighters win this case successfully. It should also be brought up about the Chief Quinn remarks of breaking windows of other firefighters.

Now we will see, but I don't expect much as this has been going on for a long time . When I was on the job we had to watch our backs not from the fire but from certain men .

"PCFD Eng 58", I just read your comment (12/31/2016) on page 2 of "The Fractured Fire Service of Norwich, Ct". It seems that the place you once lived in, Port Chester, isn't the same.

As I see it, Port Chester FD took a big step BACKWARDS. So many places are finding ways of either hiring firefighters or contracting out to outside departments who do have an on duty crew.

As an example, in Portland, Ct., an all volunteer dept,, they contracted out with the nearby Middletown Fire Dept to send at least one piece of manned apparatus to incidents.

Another small town near me, Preston, Ct., hired three firefighters for daytime coverage and a fulltime chief. The fire dept also provides the ambulance service as well.

Another small local town (Ledyard, Ct) just hired one additional firefighter to add to the Monday through Friday coverage of Three firefighters, plus a fulltime fire marshal.

To my north there are the small towns of Canterbury and Voluntown who do the same.

In these examples presented, could they all be wrong in hiring full time firefighters ? I'm sure it comes with a price, but so does most of our other basic necessities in life come with a price tag. Our food, clothing, shelter. Our other public service employees that we all count on such as our teachers, police, public works, and our military.

The City of Port Chester hasn't felt it yet. But I'm sure the day will come when SOMEONE WILL feel the effects of this decision, either in property loss or even injury or worse.

     After this decision was made:

    1) Did all of those laid off Port Chester Firefighters find other fire dept jobs" ?

    2) What happened to Chief Quinn after his comments to break windows on a firefighters home ? I can tell you this, "had those comments been made by career firefighters I know, they'd be looking at a few weeks suspension with NO pay had it become social media news".

According to the Mayor , we did nothing when we got on location as told to him by the dept heads

They aren't talking about equality between residents/non-residents.  It's pretty much strictly about race and maybe some gender.

The last Westchester firefighter exam was ridiculously easy, resulting in over 300 candidates achieving 100%.  The test was 50 questions, and most of the test was reading comprehension. When I took the test that got me on the job in the early 00's, there was a variety of question, including math that correlated to pump operations, mechanical aptitude, and following orders.  There were well over 100 questions on that exam.

It seem like exams are designed nowadays to allow people to pass, for a probable multitude of reasons. It used to be the exam was designed to get the best candidates for the job, now it's designed to give everybody passing scores. With more and more college educated people that are taking these basic grade school exams, it's making it even harder for people to have an edge on getting the job. A lot of people taking these exams don't even know how to use a screwdriver yet are getting 100's, and I'm serious about that.

I have no problem with departments trying to increase their diversity, but with the way they do it. It should be done with recruiting efforts, public education, and prep courses, not by dumbing down tests.

While I agree that entry level tests do not require knowledge that will be taught in training. I would be cautious because tests like this are generally only changed when someone has an agenda.

Oh this should end well for everyone. Where will they be getting all this new energy? Canada? Really? Wind Farms? That should be able to create the same amount of energy of a nuclear power plant. I know Indian Point is old and could use a updating but you cant just cut a quarter of the power and think everything is gonna be ok.

No interior stairs? Really? Is that the best you can come up with?

You did notice the members that were seen in the video walking inside on the second floor with hand lights (at the same time that someone was arbitrarily taking out a window from a ladder).

Looked good for Mommy or your Istantgram profile pic, could have just as easily been opened up by hand from the guy standing inside.

The attic space on a house like this is relatively small. Fires in attics such as this work best when water actually comes in contact with the fire.

Given that the roof is designed to shed water, a couple of holes from below and some application of water and we can save the numerous tones, air horn extravaganza, and epic battle poses for a fire that may actually be deserving of such.

The more videos like this that appear, I really wonder if the fire service of today is about production for social media or about effectiveness of tactics and extinguishment.

    Flame on.
