The county's Rescue Team has a division of water rescue tech's and are willing to go anywhere... One of the nice features of the County team is that it is made up of many different members from departments around Westchester ( fire and EMS ). So like last year in Ossining, 4 minutes after the team was dispatched 2 members of the team were on the scene and assisted Ossining in starting the rescue...
Yes it would be great to have certain departments organized special teams, but the cost, manpower needs and time requirements adds on members... In my eyes the County's Team is a step in the right direction.

Tanker 10eng liked a post in a topic by x4093k in Does FDNY Ride Metro North For Free?
Personally, I don't think anyone should ride for free. Even though my father has been a detective down there for 30 + years, it's not right that they keep raising it for the public, but let them ride for free. I'd say let them on for a reduced price, or make their own card that FDNY or NYPD has to pay for monthly or yearly. Even though its a train, it's still public transportation, and can't find that without a fee, and i think that should go for all.
Speaking of trains, bridges also let PD and FD go through the tolls for free. Now, I could see why if there is a jumper or a emergency in the middle of the bridge( that goes for trains too, if theres a stabbing or a fire on the train, then it'd be fair), but to go someplace you really don't need to go to, or do, theres a fee, and it should be paid for all who use it, no matter who you are.
Just my opinion.

Tanker 10eng liked a post in a topic by voltage1256 in Are we focusing too much on the "big stuff"
While I see where you are coming from, I think its a little shallow to use these examples on such a grand scale. Sure every department has its "issues" but the majority in the system do not have the ones stated above. A couple of members here have some quotes in their signatures I find very true, "Over prepare, then go with the flow" and "When the time to perform arrives, the time to prepare has passed" unfortunately in today's world we have to be ready for whatever, I'm not saying in a paranoid way expect the big one its coming! But preparing never hurts.

Tanker 10eng liked a post in a topic by BBBMF in Has DES Outgrown Their Facilities?
From my visits to the Fire training center, it seems to work for the time being. WCFTC has many great fire instructors who are able to use what they have, in addition to their own personal experience and knowledge to train new and old firefighters how to get the job done. All the vehicles are housed inside the buildings and granted it may be a little tight, that really does not matter. 60 control does an excellent job receiving and dispatching runs and the instructors are producing.
We're in a tight economy and we don't need to start planning projects which there is no money to allocate towards. You left, why do you care so much...Come back and help fix it if it's really bothering you.

I think it would be more of a home owner then a town or FD to install. I have wondered many times why these million dollar homes in the NO HYDRANT districts, do not have them near the main house... or even a development with poor water supply using them... but if I was the chief, I would not be going to my town with the request to install some...

I'll jump in here with my ever so humble opinion on "helping out" neighboring departments as it applies in the volunteer world. Personally I find nothing wrong with it so long as there is a mechanism in place to assure accountability and that when "helping" one is familiar with how things are done by the department they are helping, otherwise they become a hinderance at best. I can remember back to when the roster of my FD had a space on it under the heading "non members assisting" and I can recall many fires in which such assistance was offered and accepted. If a department is going to allow non members to work jobs it is up to them to ensure that anyone who may assist in anything other than lugging a hose or hitting a hydrant is versed in their SOP/Gs. In another of my departments we regularly trained with our neighbors and on a number of occassions I assisted them especially during normal working hours if I was available, but this was only after I and my capabilities were known from those training sessions. This was not and is not freelancing it is using your expertise to assist a department in need IF they want it, which more often than not in my experience they have. Bottom line here is that to me if you are capable, willing and available you should assist if that need exists and the "host" department accepts the offer so long as doing so does not adversely affect you or your department.
Just my .$02
Happy New Year!!

When you really think about it, there should of been at least one additional engine on this job, ... for a second fill site for the Tankers... one of the general rules of thumb I have learned, ( 3 tankers can work off of 1 fill site, 4 - 6 tankers should have 2 fill sites. ) so with this in mind, there should of been another engine on the list...
* newsbuff - tell you what, you start on 1 side of BCR and I'll come in from the other end with T 10 and you tell me its really a 2 lane road...
* johnnyov - your incident debriefing, it might be helpful to invite some of the key members of the different areas of this call... ( the fill site, tanker off load site, and fire ground ) so that you can see points from different views... plus, I am sure its not going to be the last time we work together, so it could help get us all on the same page or provide us with a different method of operating...
* jflynn - on several other topics you have mentioned, that you do not know much about tanker operations, which is understandable, and if you ever wish to attend on of the Croton / Yorktown / Millwood yearly tanker drills, we would love to have you there and open up to any ideas you may have... let me know and I will gladly email you when we do our next...
* bnechis - you did attend our last CYM tanker drill and you did bring up some good points, one thing I took from your comments, lead Croton to get a 5 inch gated Wye, and because the tanker site was on a hill side, with no level areas near by, we tossed the ponds on the side of the road and went with the gated Wye and had 2 tankers nurse to the relay pumper, which worked out great.. thanks Barry.
* 99subi - most of the tankers in this area carry around 3000 gallons...
- as far as the worries about there being 100 FF on this job, WOW thats great... I know every single resident I spoke with, who were trying to get home or out for some reason we gald so many people were there to help out... I think it says allot of the system up here in Northen Westchester... it may not be the best, but it does work.
....... AND YORKTOWN, THIS DID NOT COUNT AS YOUR YEARLY TANKER DRILL, ITS YOUR TURN FOR THIS YEAR...

Interesting structure, can it be a problem ??? sure, but thats the job of the local FD to get out and know the buildings it covers... You can not know eveything, and know how each was built, but a general knowledge can go a long way...
As far as it being dilapidated why would you say that ??? it looks well built.. yeah the porches look scarey but from the picture they all look structurely stable and straight... the paint looks fresh as there are not stains from water wear, so maybe the owner takes care of the building... Plus its an older building and most of them were over built, not like the homes of today...
Face it, this is the area we live in, the Hudson River Valley, things were built on steep slopes and many things are not as they appear... bottom line is we need to get to know our areas, remind everyone of floors which are " below " the ground floor, and the Engineering Depts. need to make sure structures are sound... My biggest fear is that Cape house which is loaded with years of memories and junk...

So B of A should just go there and hand out cash?? There are no ATMs and in some cases no banks operating for miles. Not all businesses take credit cards, especially without power. How much cash do you keep in your go bag? Eventually you'll need more. I would hope they waived any fees for other bank customers.

Discussing the events of a recent call, talking about ways which could of made the run smother or safer, opening other people’s ( or my ) eyes to other opinions, thinking outside the box and looking at it from another stand point is one of the things I believe have helped me and the guys from WECO, that I have worked with for years…
How is this toxic ??? what I believe, what is really toxic is the guy who believes “ what I do is right and that’s that !! “ and can not take criticism from other’s who may have done it differently…I have found the guys with an OPEN MIND, are the best ones to work with, and together a team can excel.
One of the major problems which can come from this, is just how someone brings it up, if it is NOT broadcasted properly, it will come across as an insult, and part of being an adult, is that we learn to listen to others and respect others feelings…. I am not 100 % sure, but I believe this is what JFlynn always means when he says QTIP… and I have started to agree with this…. We need to stop being babies and man up…. ( no disrespect to the ladies out there … )

I see your point, but it sounds more like the " what if " game.. we all can second guess everything to death... Its is the sad state of the world we live in today, if something happens, it is always someone elses fault... never the person behind the wheel ...
The example you use, in my book, would be your fault for allowing a friend to use your boat, past its capablities... plus fault should be on the operator for not making sure the boat was safe for his party... NOT the local PD who checked the boat out the week before, when your family was using it... by using this train of thought, every PD agency should check a boat everytime it leaves the dock, as all the elements can change... I do see your point, heli., but there needs to be a happy middle point here...

Just a guy liked a post in a topic by Tanker 10eng in Hudson River boaters plan protest, say marine units overdo safety checks
With all of the new electric tools the PD has today ( Plate readers, laptops in cars ) someone should invent something similiar to the plate readers, so a PD unit can scan markings on a boat and be able to see when it was last inspected for a safety check. If it was performed say within the last 2 months, then the PD patrol unit can leave them be, unless there was cause for them to be stopped...
I respect the job these PD units are trying to do, but I can also see the point of the boaters... there should be a level playing field here.
