I think that when you renew your liscence you should have to take a informational course to be informed on the new v & t laws that have gone into effect since you renewed it the last time. It could be on the web with a quiz at the end. Once you pass the quiz you get a number, code etc that would allow you to continue the renweal process. Wouldn't take all that long and would update motorists.

After the last FHP Trooper was killed as he sat in his patrol car on the turnpike; rear-ended, Crown Vic burst into flames, they got this law up and running. Amazing how many people are still ignorant of it though.
These days the FHP is concentrating on nabbing people who flash their high-beams at on-coming traffic to alert motorists of a radar trap.
The days of helping other motorists in this fashion are, and should be, long gone. For all you know you could be alerting a wanted felon to slow down (amazing how many drug-runners are busted because they are speeding to begin with).
It's like the days of picking up hitch-hikers. Those days are long gone as well; for all you know and chances are the hitch-hiker could be a murderer on the run.
The nostalgic days of "Smokey and the Bandit" and C.B. radios have long faded into history. The highways have never been more dangerous than they are now.
Returning recently into the State of Florida from a trip to South Carolina; woman trying to flag down cars, with two men laying directly under the rear bumper looking at something under the car. suspicious looking (and no she hadn't just run them over) Now 20 years ago I might have stopped. Today the chances are just as good that the two guys laying down will jump up, rob you of your wallet and cell phone, and jack your car. Instead, we all have cell phones; dial 9-1-1 and let the cops handle it.
The only thing I'll still stop for is flames or an MVA with obvious injuries and no first responders on scene yet. Some things we just can't let go of.
Regarding the move-over law, I put my flashers on, move into the center-turning lane down here on the Overseas Highway and slow down to 25 in a 45 mph zone. Looking in my rear-view mirror it never fails to see idiots not moving over, not slowing down, etc.
The last 7 Monroe County Sheriffs (the Keys are Monroe County) killed on the job have been vehicular related.

Thanks for the hints I definitely want to stop at some of these places if we have the time!!
Today's travels took us into PG Co., but we were on a tight schedule. My father wanted to visit and pay respects to his father's grave, (located in PGCO).
On the way back we passed DCFD Eng. Co. #19, the guys were hosing some stuff down, so we stopped to shoot the breeze.
Not the best photo, I know, but it was a quick shot with as little traffic in front as I could get!

I didn't even get the chance to get any info on this engine, as within 2 minutes of getting there, they got an alarm and had to run.

The above engine is due for replacement in the next few weeks, here is a Spy Shot of the NEW DCFD E-19!!

That's correct, WC-DES manages the Westchester County Animal Response Team (WesCART). They are a active volunteer group that "responds to emergencies that require animal rescue, evacuation, veterinary disaster care, and the sheltering of pets during a major disaster. WesCART is active in educating the public concerning disaster preparedness and pets." In English, when a disaster strikes and the need for pet sheltering or care arises, this group is the one to call. Since pets are not allowed into shelters, there really is a huge need for a specialized group like this to provide care for animals during disasters. I know for a fact that my local CERT has WesCART as their POC if a client arrives with pets and they can't find anywhere else to put them. At the Fire Training Center there is a WesCART trailer with their equipment. Check out the Facebook Page to see pictures of them in action. I don't really know much more about them because I am not a member, just a supporter.

For anyone who is interested, they are having a meeting tomorrow:

It's true that most department may only run a few fires per year - and the odds of them happening at the same time as a neighboring district is minimal. But it does happen.
    Case #1
    9/15/04
The Croton FD was dispatched to a residential alarm on Truesdale Drive. Moments later, PD updated it as a working structure fire. Due to the large size of the home, the stone walls and multiple roofs encountered, more Mutual Aid than usual was needed.
Operating: Croton (All units), Ossining (Engine & FAST), Yorktown FAST, Bedford Hills FAST, Buchanan Cascade. An Engine from Montrose covers Croton.
Less than 90 minutes after this, Montrose is dispatched to a residential alarm on Mountain Side Trail. When the Chief arrives he find a working structure fire. The "Tri-Village" is activated, an he has an Engine from Buchanan and Verplanck respond to the scene. The primary FAST (Croton) is operating at their own fire, so Mohegan is called. The Montrose Engine in Croton's quarters responds back, moving Briarcliff into Croton. A Cascade unit from Continental Village (R39) is called in place of the usual Buchanan Cascade unit. Additional assistance from Peekskill (FAST) and the Montrose VAFD are also called to assist.
    Case #2
    4/7/05
Ossining FD has a fire in a 3-story townhouse. Original request is for a Croton FAST. Once it's realized that the fire is advancing, the IC puts Croton's FAST to work and calls another FAST (Yorktown) and a TL from Croton. A Cascade (R36) from Millwood and an additional FAST from Chappaqua are added a little later for relief.
    15 minutes later...
Irvington FD has a fire in a mansion on El Rietro Drive. The IC calls for a FAST from Dobbs Ferry and an Engine from Tarrytown. Additional help is needed, so the IC later calls a 2nd FAST from Ardsley, an Engine from Elmsford and a Ladder from Tarrytown.
To cover all of these departments, the following relocates were deployed:
To Croton: TL8 from Montrose for Croton AND Ossining.
To Ossining: E94 from Briarcliff, E260 from Pleasantville and TL38 from Sleepy Hollow.
    To Tarrytown: TL21 from Elmsford.
To Sleepy Hollow: TL49 from Valhalla.
To Valhalla: L47 from North White Plains for Valhalla AND Hawthorne (TL12 OOS).
There's more instances like this in other parts of the county over the past few years.
I'm not much of a gambling man, but I do know Mr. Murphy is usually lurking in the shadows.
If any department is going to send resources Mutual Aid - bottom line - make sure you have sufficient coverage in your home field, even if it has to come from another department.

  12. billy98988 liked a post in a topic by SWS1 in Somers FD New Chief's 2011 Suburban
Located in northeastern Westchester County, the Somers Fire Department has taken delivery of their newest Chief's vehicle, a 2011 Chevrolet Suburban.

Serving as both a first response vehicle and incident command post, 2443 incorporates an all LED Whelen lighting system that includes a Freedom FX lightbar, 700 series and LINZ6 series Super LEDs behind the grille, M4 LEDs on each outer corner and on the rear cargo door and 4 LAW HideAway LEDs in the rear taillights. Strip Lite and LINZ6 LEDs were added in the rear cargo compartment to provide additional rear facing warning when the cargo door is raised. All six are door activated and can be temporarily disabled by way of an automatically resetting sixty second timer. A roof mounted Dominator Traffic Advisor provides direction for oncoming vehicles. A CenCom control system and Sound Off headlight flasher complete the warning system.

A 24" Havis console contains the department and county trunk radios, Uniden scanner, cup holders, power outlets, side mount armrest, CenCom control head and storage box. The computer mount is a heavy duty Havis system which includes a multi position tilt/swivel arm and docking station for a Panasonic CF19 laptop using a roof mounted Antenna Plus Cellular/PCS/GPS antenna. An airbag option switch was installed to allow for selective deactivation of the passenger front airbag.

The exterior graphics package incorporates gold leaf and reflective elements, the department's elephant logo on each front door and a diamond grade red and white safety chevron spanning the entire rear cargo door. Par 36 Super LED floodlights were installed under the rear of the truck and configured to operate with the OEM reverse lights to aid in backing the vehicle at night.

The staff and crew at Specialty Warning Systems extends it's thanks to the Somers FD for their confidence in us to provide their latest Chief's Suburban, the second vehicle upfitted by SWS for the Somers FD this year. (U-5 was completed and delivered this past June). We look forward to working with them on additional projects in the future.

But I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to each and every one of you. As a family member, I understand the sacrifices you make, the training you make time for and the time you are away from your families, friends and other activities so you can serve your community in the most amazing way I can think of.
I salute your bravery, your commitment and your expertise. Our communities are better places because you live, work and volunteer here.
Consider this a long distance hug from a very grateful community member.

    Chris,
The park is Liberty State Park which is located off Exit 14B of the turnpike..... Any city along the river such as Hoboken or Jersey City offer good vantage points to see the tribute.... Here are a few photos of the walkway at Liberty State Park. I suspect it may be pretty crowded here this year.....

Looking south the LSP visitor center is to the right..... You can see several photographers lined up.....

Looking to the north..... I believe that is the Goldman-Sachs building on Exchange Place in Hoboken..... Again there are a few more photographers lined up....

And here is a shot looking straight across to Manhattan.
The other popular spot is at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge at the park referred to as "DUMBO" which stands for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass......

Here's what it looks like from DUMBO.....

And here is a shot showing both the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.....I have been here when there were so many photographers lined up that I had to set my camera up on the rocks that line the river, and shoot with the rats running around my feet.....
Lastly, here's a few links about the tribute that you may find useful.....

If that is the train of thought some of you have? I find that very embarrassing that people in 2011 think this way. Yes I understand their beliefs and there way of life, and I am sure there are many that follow the religion but do not follow Sharia law. How many of you are Roman Catholic and how many of you follow the Ten Commandments.
