That's the age we live in. It's only going to get worse with technology, not better.

Could you elaborate on the legality question?

Ok,maybe I'm confused,if there is no emergency, such as driving to another one's quarters, how do you justify going Lights and siren's? If and only If, another call comes in,than it's an Emergency, and you go lights and sirens. God help the driver, officer ,chief and taxpayers of the municipality,if that rig gets into an accident, relocating to stand-by in another FD. Not only will the Dept get sued, the officer or Chief and driver may get sued personnally, and if the lawyers can prove negligence on anyone's part, you could be held liable and if punitive damages, that come out of your pocket, not the Department.Sure wouldn't want that headache..
With all the comments on here about let's be safe and what-not,how anyone can advocate screaming to another town to sit in the firehouse, lights and sirens,is mind-boggling..
For that matter, why do we still respond to CO (No Symptoms) calls, and other nuisance non- emergency calls, lights and sirens? That's for another day though....
    Just my thoughts...Cover your A$$.....

I need to know.. Does anyone actually think the public care about this when they see it? We all see it because we are on the job and notice it. I bet if you asked anyone in a parking lot when we come across these vehicles, they would A. have no clue where the Town is in the state and B. Not really care. Now i am not talking about just this one instance. I am talking about any time it happens. The public do not care until it is a big deal (ie. a accident or something). John Q public is going to be more worried about his shopping, getting to work, (why aren't my darn kids here where i said i would pick them up) then even care about this. Plus nothing will ever happen to change it. You can make rules that you cant go out of town with it but so what. What if he needs to go see a few chiefs or need to make a pick up somewhere of some gear, is he going to check in with mommy to ask if he can leave the block? Exactly. He is the chief, he is the boss. you might not like it but he has the authority to go where he wants. If on the other hand he takes a apparatus then ya we need to know every mile you are gonna take.
Now let the man shop and stop stirring up a ruckus.

Recall about 20 years ago, a 'scumbag drug dealer' tried to run over and kill a Mt Vernon cop, and was shot and handcuffed and left in the road. EMS arrived and either directed themselves or were directed by PD to the officer with the knee injury. The dirt bag dealer eventually arrived at the ED, cuffed. Per tesitmony, there were (I have forgotten the #. 12?) cops in the ED and none responded to the MD's request to remove the handcuffs to allow treatment. Thank god the cop-attempted murdering dirtbag bled to death.
    WRONG
Turns out he was a West Med Center neonatal surgeon trying to visit his girlfriend and he made a wrong turn off the BRP. His stopping and U-turning on a deserted commercial street attracted the attention of two narcs, in a cadilace and with much facial hair (Point being, the thinking is he did not think they were cops). They tried to stop him and he fled, striking the knee-injured officer. The Doctor was promptly shot to death. The upshot is that the inevitalbe suit was filed and won by the plaintiff. MV I believe actually had to borrow $$ to pay as it exceeded their city insurance max payout.
I appologize to the one member of the EMS crew I know is still doin' the job for dredging this incident up. But I thought it was appropriate for this discussion that no matter how clear the picture is at the time, things are not what they may appear to be. I especially want to express respect for the job of the LEO, and mean no ill intent in bringing up what is surely a painful memory for them.
We are not robots with no feelings and emotions. The job is not always easy. Treat every patient as a human being or don't treat human beings.
After over 25 years of 2000 calls a year and I am not in the unfortunate mindset of the poster above. Please, when my sister, the fully employed 20+ year tax paying paralegal and occasional heroin user OD's, please send another care-giver.

And here are my final thoughts. Please don't lump all HCP and LEO's together and assume they make all these "assumptions", because I assure it, that's not the case. I'm sorry that you've become so cynical through your experiences. I've been a Paramedic for fourteen years now, in addition to CFR and EMT time prior to that. I understand certain patients try your frustrations. And I don't believe the problem is that you had these "thoughts", it was your implication that you would alter you actions as a professional in response to them. You can be a human and have "thoughts" about your patients, but once anyone starts withholding treatment in response to it, I personally believe a line has been crossed. I live in a community with both "elderly white ladies" and "middle age black men". It doesn't really alter my daily life.

Well, based on your argument (and supported by your Tea Party Avatar), I'd have to consider the possibilities that my taxes are impacted. Pathetic.
Makes me wonder about your commitment to your patients well being. Do you take it a step further? Do you make treatment decisions about certain groups of people you don't care for as well? Maybe based on race or religion too? Or is it just groups you feel are inferior? Someone should contact your employer. Your PCR's should be QA/QI'd to identify any cases where your personal feelings have dictated patient treatment based on your distaste of them or where you thought they might cost too much.

Yeah, but when you couple it with the context, you don't need to be a rocket scientist.

Perhaps your attitude toward the Ambulance Corps is why they only want you on scene when it is absolutely necessary.

Some of the above comments sicken me. Our job and duty is to save lives, not to judge and decide who is deserving of our care. Just because someone is addicted to drugs does not make them any less of a human being, and any less worthy of our care.

I agree with x635. Addiction is horrible and dying is certainly not the answer. The 21 year old who shoots up most likely doesn't have the intentions of OD'ing. However, should he or she OD, having nasal narcan can get that person back under bls care while ALS is enroute. This was an excellent post, but too see such pathetic ignorance is disgusting.

You really can't go down this road, once begun where does it stop. Should we stop treating cancer patients, how about not resus anyone over 80, or how about 75. No, better as health care providers to treat everyone. Lfie is presious, some people do turn thier life completly around and become "useful members of society.

The population of Far Rockaway is reported to be about 29,000 with the average household owning less than 1 car, so they are heavily reliant on MTA or the City to move them out.
As Police Chief Brody uttered in Jaws: ''we are going to need a bigger boat" comes to mind

Wow. Have a problem with treating diabetics because they eat too much? What about cancer patients, since it might be related to unhealthy lifestyle choices? Is this your personal prerogative or an agency policy?
