I do not own a gun, I have shot guns in target practice and don't usually have comments about the gun laws however I have a real problem with this knee jerk reaction by someone who wants to be President some day. I don’t understand how the government sees this as a way to curb gun violence. This law kicks law abiding citizens in the chest making them potential criminals if they have 8 bullets in their in a magazine instead of 7 (I know there are restrictions now but for legal gun owners who have a 10 round clip and would now only be allowed to have 7 it can be a problem) . The government goes after the so called "assault weapons" some of which are a basic shot gun with modern day plastic pieces attached.
The majority of shootings that happen in this country are by criminals who can care less what the law says. Few are committed by legal gun owners.
While some feel the opposite is the way to go...
If you look at the city of Chicago who has the stingiest gun laws in the nation, you see that criminals don't care about laws! Dozens are shot or killed every day and even more on weekends.
Now NY plans these ridiculous laws let us not forget the federal government plans on revising the laws as well. The people must rise up and defeat the government on this one, Go after the true criminals not the guy who follows the law

Funny you should mention training, Capt32. I learned water rescue using a boat when I was about 16 years old. That's 50 years ago, but this was the first rescue of a swimmer in trouble I ever made. My son is on the VBFD Tech Rescue team and learned the evolution a few short years ago. When the rescue was being made, we were both exactly on the same page. Each knew what the other was doing. Communication between us was clear and concise and both of us knew the drill step by step. That was an operation conducted by two generations of firefighters.
You might need your training today, tomorrow, or maybe 50 years from now. When the unusual situation comes along, it usually comes quickly "Whoop...there it is." Ours is the only profession that has to commit every training course to memory and remember it forever. Do you remember high school trig? Probably not. But do you remember the signs of impending backdraft? I bet you do...forever.
Tommy Brennan (RIP) used to say that a good firefighter has to fill his head with "stuff" and be able to get up at 2am from a sound sleep and be able to pull that "stuff" back out.

I don't know if a Higher Power put me in this particular situation or not, but I doubt it was a test for me to enter the Big Firehouse in the sky.
I do know, however, that we all get 15 minutes of fame in our lifetime and some of you people are using mine up with bullpoop

EEEEasy, there big fella. That's how things get blown out of proportion. First, let's get that "Heroic" off the marquee. Heroic means that you put yourself in great danger to save a life. That was not the case. Like most rescues the rescuer happens to be at the right place at the right time.
All we did was make a pickup that just involved some maneuvering to get to them. Granted they were on the brink of drowning, but it was just a pickup by a boat with 2 firefighters aboard. We just did what we always do, even on our day off. Not heroic at all.
Let's make some use out of this thread and make it a training session on marine rescue of persons in the water and in distress operating from a private vessel from a private boat.
People who are on the brink of drowning usually do not call for help. They are silent with a look of panic. If they show these signs, they are going down very soon.
    SOP
    1. Call Mayday... get help on way
    2. Never lose sight of victim. Point your arm in vic.s direction for your boat's driver to aim
3 When close enough throw PFD's or anything that floats DO NOT enter the water
4 Throw rope if needed DO NOT enter the water
5 Once vic is alongside ensure motor is off so there are no prop injuries
6 Haul vic at the lowest point , usually it's the stern. DO NOT ENTER WATER
7 DO NOT ENTER WATER (Are you getting the point?)
"Heroic" is a pretty heavy word. Don't use it lightly

I was told this morning of a heroic act performed yesterday by wraftery and his family.
They were boating off Virginia Beach when they noticed two swimmers in distress. They maneuvered their boat around some tricky old docks and plucked the swimmers from the water just as Virginia Beach FD Marine unit and Virginia Beach PD helicopter arrived.
I'm sure he has some more detailed information, but that's what I heard. Strong work!

Description: Fire in a middle-of-the-row 3 story attatched wood frame p/d
1620hrs-Base-5 alerting Vails Gate for the reported rear porch on fire, 41 Vails Gate Heights Dr.
While en-route, smoke was seen from several blocks away. VGFD Car-2 arrived and advised of heavy fire in the rear of #41. While approaching the scene, Car-1 noted that fire was quickly spreading up the rear wall. Car-2 quickly confirmed that fire had extended into the structure. Fire had run up the wall and auto-exposed into the structure, as well as the cockloft.
Command then transmitted a 2nd Alarm, bringing the City of Newburgh as FAST and (1) Engine from New Windsor to the scene.
E478 was 1st due and laid in from a hydrant. It's crew led off through the front door with a line where they encountered heavy fire and Colliers mansion-like conditions.
T482 arrived 2nd with part of its crew going to the roof, while other members assisted in opening up and line placement.
E481 arrived and stretched a 1 3/4" line to the #2 floor where they also encountered heavy fire.
Members also stretched a 3rd line up to the 3rd floor.
E479 conducted a reverse lay from E481 to a hydrant on a separate main.
E479's crew then stretched a line into exposure #2.
Washingtonville's FAST was requested to the scene as Newburgh would be put to work.
Washingtonville responded with their Truck and set-up their aerial on the 1-2 corner. They had ample manpower which enabled them to maintain a FAST, as well as provide a crew to open up and go to the roof.
Newburghs crew was tasked with stretching a line into the #4 exposure.
With fear that the fire would run the cockloft, Winona Lake was special-called to the scene with their tower ladder. Fortunately, the bulk of the fire was k/d upon their arrival.

    ---------------
A message from the Chief of the Millbrook Fire department..
My utmost thanks to the personnel who responded to the structure fire last night during which the Millbrook Fire Department fought a heavily-involved fire in a 12,000-square-foot house, seven road miles from the station, in temperatures that dropped to around 0°F by the end of the incident.

Our efforts were additionally hampered by the absence of a viable water source in the immediate vicinity, a driveway just under 2000' long and barely wide enough for an apparatus, high winds, and hilly terrain around the structure covered in 18-36" of snow. The fire was dispatched at 19:29hrs, and the last unit was placed in service at 02:50hrs. The occupants were not at home at the time of the fire.

Nearly a hundred firefighters operated at the scene or stood by, from Millbrook; Wassaic; Dover Plains; Amenia; Pleasant Valley; Union Vale; Millerton; Sharon, CT; and Lakeville, CT. Additional assistance was received from Transcare Ambulance, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, the New York State Police, the Town of Washington Highway Department, and the Dutchess 911 Dispatch Center. If I have forgotten anyone, I apologize. It's been a long night.

Fires of this nature and scope are, thankfully, rare. The determination, skill, and camaraderie demonstrated last night are a testament to the positive attitudes and training of our firefighters, EMS providers, and police personnel. While the structure was a total loss, it goes in my book as a "good" alarm: no one was hurt, everyone went home, nothing was seriously broken, and the fire is out.

To say I'm proud to be a part of this service would be a gross understatement. I'm proud of each and every person who responded, grateful to all of you for that skill and determination, and humbled that you allow me to lead you. Thank you all.

We did lose a few items that are irreplaceable. As many know we lost our '43 Willys. We lost some memorabilia from the Rec Room, however a good majority was able to be recovered. The majority of the things we lost were completely replaceable. We lost approx 30 sets of turnout gear, with the remaining being sent out for testing. HUGE THANKS goes out to car 2443 for recovering our 100+ year old "Golden's Bridge Fire Department" sign from our meeting room. It was on the original firehouse when it opened and is probably one of the most important historic pieces in the firehouse currently.
We are already making progress in leaps and bounds. The restoration company, SoundShore Restorations out of Bedford Hills, has done a phenomenal job and has made the process as easy as possible for us. Their guys have been at GBFD scrubbing, wiping and mopping basically non stop since monday evening. They have assured us that by the end of this business week, that the remaining side of the engine bay will be cleaned to the point that you wont even be able to tell there was a 2 alarm fire in the building. when I left last night, I was able to see the white paint on the ceiling and the nasty puke green walls are back to being the nasty puke green walls. They literally have an army of workers there round the clock. as i counted yesterday, the total neared 40 workers. which doesn't even include plumbers, electricians, engineers and architects.
Currently "the neighbors" are housing our apparatus. We are waiting on a semi-permanant structure being transported from Tennessee, which will house all remaining equipment. For anyone whos familiar, it s the same building Katonah FD had out behind their firehouse while they were under renovation. As it stands now E-139 and Marine 25 are being housed in Katonah, E-138 & E-140 are being housed in Croton Falls Sta. 2 and T-1 is being housed in South Salem.
Also, there was a huge Interior attack initiated at this fire. Operations went exterior only for a small period of time after a partial collapse, however after deemed that it was safe to re-enter, the interior attack was re-established. The Master stream from TL-57 as well as the deck gun on E-149 were utilized after the collapse to darken down the free burning fire. The roof was constructed out of tri-bearing wood trusses. however the engine bays luckily, and unknown to us, had a double redundant walls. the first layer is 4 inch solid concrete block, which covered 2 inch styrofoam insulation board, which covered at least a 12 inch thick structural reinforced poured concrete wall.

Gentlemen, I would like to start by thanking anyone who was involved with on scene operations as well as all of you who took the time to bring us refreshments and food during our definite time of need. While I was not on scene, I would like to try to clarify some of the still foggy details.
1.) @RWC130, Engine 138 was successfully removed from the building before any damage was sustained. That goes for E-139, E-140, and T-1 as well. R-24 was badly burned and while it's not been deemed a total loss yet, it's in bad shape. We did lose 2142, a 2006 Chevrolet Suburbam 2500 as well as ex-2143, a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban 2500.
2.) @JM15, Mack your somewhat correct. We do currently have a tanker in the final/paint stages at 4Guys and we were visiting for pre-paint inspection. Myself and 3 others attended. Truck looks phenomenal, once I'm done here I'll post a few pics.
3.) Our tanker was full until, like GBFD111 said, an ex chief deployed the contents into the 1st arriving Porta-Pond. Standard practice is to leave the tanker full in quarters in preparation for an alarm, we're no different, our tanker stays full.
4.) The alarm system was functioning properly and it did activate. The original call was for a commercial alarm. Anyone who has any doubts regarding this fact, pm me your cell numbered I'll be glad to send you the ipage.

Yes, 4000 feet of 4 inch supply line on the reel. As for a wetdown, I would think that they will have one...although, as the past few years have shown, it's hardly a guarantee. Seems to be a dying tradition in some areas for any number of reasons. If I hear anything about it, I'll post it either here or in the Events thread (unless somebody else does first).

Now with NY's new I-STOP program, https://www.health.ny.gov/professionals/narcotic/prescription_monitoring/ I feel it will just make the demand for heroin worse since there will be less prescription drugs on the streets
