The Times Herald Record reported today that "The only active black member of the 30 person volunteer Orange Cty HazMat response team has filed a discrimination complaint against the Cty Fire Training Center, alleging the Cty Fire Coordinator prevented him from taking training courses because of his skin color."
The complaint was filed in March with the state Division of Human Rights. It includes a sworn affidavit from the Hazmat supervisor who stated that when informed of the complaint the Cty Fire Coordinator, who is white, referred to the individual as looking like a gorilla & used racial slurs to further describe the individual.
Both the Cty Fire Coordinator & Cty Emergency Services Commissioner referred all questions to the Cty attorney. The Cty mouthpiece responded to the complaint in July, saying the claim was baseless since (get this) the Hazmat team is not a fire company or fire department & therefore can't file a complaint under the state human rights law. He declined further comment. The Hazmat supervisor, who is white, is the Cty Deputy FIRE Coordinator.
The article goes on to allude a$$ covering, finger pointing, blame shifting & accusations of attempted intimidation.
The member states that he was left off the list for training seminars at the state FIRE Academy in 2008 & 2009, despite submitting all the proper paperwork on time. The member finally stated "the only thing we want is to work."

You might want to listen to the audio, but it'll probably get your blood to boiling. The ignorance factor comes into play with the woman doing the filming in a big way. Then you start to hear people yelling "where's the water?!" a few minutes in. I read on another site that there were problems gaining entry into the fire apartment, so getting water flowing from the interior became a problem. The guy yelling "where's the f-in water man", probably was the dumb a** that lit his apt up!
On another note, can anybody tell me why (Kujo?) the west coast fire departments are so in love with wooden ground ladders still?

I started writing this post thinking of just one person, Tom Flanigan of Mamaroneck Village EMS who is a US Marine service in Afghanistan. Then I thought that there are many other "Tom Flanigans" out there from different volunteer EMS agencies. I hope that every volunteer EMS member who serves our country in multiple ways are mentioned in this post. Please let everyone know if your volunteer agency has a member serving overseas. Please pray from our members say return home USMC E3 Tom Flanigan (EMT/Mamaroneck EMS)

Well, Mid June rolls around and it's time for vacation. I had this trip planned for a while. I gotta tell you, I had no intention of shooting any rigs on this last trip. Well, maybe two or three. Turned into a few more.
I left the Chateau and headed out to Mount Rushmore. After soaking in the sights, I stopped in the Firehouse Brewery in Rapid City, SD. From there it was down to LA via Denver, and Vegas.
My intention was simply to shoot one Los Angeles County Rig. But before I got that, it was Orange County Engine 63 I just happened to roll up on.

I headed over to OCFA Station 61, across the street from Knotts Berry Farm. Spied Truck 46 from the street. Took my shots, and took off for the north County.

My destination was an hour plus away and made it there in pretty good time. Especially for a guy who doesn't like to sit around twiddling my thumbs in traffic. I arrive in the little area called Pearblossom. LA County Station 79. Paid Engine and Patrol, Volunteer Engine in the back.

    Engine 79, 2007 KME
This was the Engine 79 that Code 3 did a few years back. It was given to the Volunteers when the KME was delivered, 1995 Freightliner. It replaced a 1970's vintage Crown.

This was all I really wanted, but the bug bit me. So I ran down to Yorba Linda, home of President Nixon, and a special lady friend of mine. Sorry boys, no pictures of her. But while waiting for her to get ready for a night out, I took some shots of OCFA Engine 32.

This was it until I went home. Or so I thought. I headed out to Tempe, Arizona to see another friend of mine. No intentions at all to shoot anything, as evidenced by me driving out with my friends daughter and her boyfriend, and the bf saying, "Hey look, smoke!!" Had to follow, and it was Mesa, Engine 201, and I don't know which Truck. Junkyard fire. Shot taken with the cell.

Finished up my trip with a few days on the shore. Back to work, and in between, a little trip to the city of Brotherly Love.
First stop, Engine 29, Medic 15, and Rescue 1. Rescue 1 didn't come out too good, and you guys deserve a little better from me.

Next stop, Center City and Chinatown.
    Engine 20

For some reason, I can't reply to my own topic. So I am going to finish up on here.
Next stop, the Battleship of the West, Squrt 57.

Northbound, Engine 50 and Truck 12.
    Brand new KME

We bid Philadelphia adieu..Next stop, next post, the Silver City Fest, day 1.

    All,
It's still not done with the restoration, but it was a good day today to go move some water. The Barton 500 GPM pump puts out water well, and catches a draft quick. My probie had some fun shooting water. They are off a cell phone, so sorry for the poor quality, but I figure they would be interesting, seeing some old apparatus being restored and still functional. I have all the orginal suction hose, ladders, etc, but it was alot easier to use the lightweight hard sleeve and modern hose for todays "testing".

So some depts there are 30 years behind and others are trying to go backwards. Let me guess the depts. that went back to 4" buy 1,500 gpm pumps.
  17. TAPSJ liked a post in a topic by JetPhoto in Fireworks exploded in stands at Dutchess Stadium 7/9/10
Friday night after the Renegades ball game at Dutchess Stadium (They won) there was a scheduled fireworks show after the game. All was going well when suddenly a shell exploded in the racks. This caused a chain of events most people only hear about and seeing it for my self gave me a O-SHOOT feeling. The shot consisted of 5 shells tied together shot electronically so there was no way to stop the other shells once the signal is sent. The 1st one went up normally, the 2nd exploded in the rack. The last 3 other shells exploded as one shot through the outfield fence and exploded near third base a second blew a smaller hole in the fence but did not go past the fence. The last one went right into the stands between home plate & 3rd, This struck the roof of the sky boxes and showered sparks over the hundreds of spectators.
Fortunately there were only a couple of minor injuries reported. Had the shell dropped a couple of feet lower there could have been some serious burns and / or the shell could have entered a sky box and started a fire.
My department has a apparatus at the stadium during all shows and we had a ambulance crew stop by to watch the fireworks which is not normal (Renegades pay private EMT's during games)But it worked out to have a couple extra EMT's there.
As far as the fire departments response to the incident everything went well. The stadium helped maintain some kind of order to evacuate the stands.
But this could have been a real disaster!
Has anyone had a similar experience?
